Following the sound trouncing, We met in the aud cmd elected to govern us during 1949-50, Bill Pearce, president, Margaret Sharp, vice-president: Mary Ann Serroni, secretary: Pat Bell, treasurer. Our sponsors were Tommy Neal and Gladys Pfeiffer. To start the year off wrong, Pat Greer fell off the gym balcony and broke some bones: consequently he was sent to a hospital and was out of school several months. Our prom was held on March 24, 1950. The theme was The Old Master Painter, and the servers were arrayed accordingly. The annual picnic in the spring was at the B. P. O. E. grounds on the Florida. Time passed, and we became Iuniors. We elected as president, Davey Feller: vice-president, Roy Angelinip secretary, Teresa Cummins: treasurer, lean Nelson: sponsors, Frank Campbell and Vernon Fuller. Once again the year started off with bad luck. On October 1, 1950, Bing flohnson was flown to Denver with polio. As it did when Pat was in need of help, the Iunior class waged a money-raising campaign, and helped cheer Bing up by writing letters. On November 20, 1950, we had our prom. With the theme, The Gypsy, the gym was decorated with a QYDSY Caravan at one end, and a campfire in the center of the floor. The servers, of course, were Freshmen masquerading as qvpsies. ln the spring of '51, we went to Haviland Lake for our picnic, which was deemed a success. The fall of 1952 finds last yea'r's Iuniors returning for the last time, and this time as Seniors. At our first class meeting we chose Weldon Queen as president, Lee McLean as vice-president. Reah Harris as secretary, and Clair Martinez as treasurer. Our sponsors are Mr. Murphy and Mr. Hollar. The first big event of the year for the Seniors was tacky day. Everybody was decked out in their finest: and at 2:22 the Seniors paraded across the stage, proudly displaying their Sunday best to an audience of underclassmen and faculty. What a day that was! Of course, during the year there are several honors to be bestowed upon Seniors either by the class or entire student body. The first of these was the election by the football team of their queen. This title was given to Christine Slade. That night we played Grand lunction and Chris and her attendants. Ianice Iohnston, Reah Harris, and Pat Mason, appeared before the crowd at the Fiesta Grounds. Our annual Homecoming program was held the week before Christmas vacation. After a period in the aud, when We welcomed all the old grads back, and entertained them properly with a play by the speech class, there was a dance in the gym and a tea in the library. The class chose Ellen Flood to receive the D. A. B. award. This honor is given each year to the senior girl who can best measure up to the standards of citizenship, leadership, scholarship, personality, and co-operation. Mary Ann Serroni and Weldon Queen were elected by all high school students to Miss Toltec and Mr. '52, respectively. 1 As this goes to press, the biggest events of our year are yet to be under- taken. Before the climax of it all, which is our graduation May 29, we have scheduled our prom for May 9, sneak day, for which no date has been set, 'and Ft. Lewis day, on which We all go to Ft. Lewis to be hilariously enter- tained for a day. MCIY 29 is DfObUlO1Y Creeping up on us more quickly than most of us realize, and mingled with anticipation is retrospect. We can all look back and say we've had fun, lots of it. We've enjoyed being Sophs and Iuniorg, ibut most of all we have loved being Seniors. We've had a good year. To Weldon and the other officers, we give our hearty thanks for doing a good iob and exhibiting fine leadership. To Coach Murphy and Mr, Hollgr, We gre thankful for that steady, guiding hand. To the rest of the teachers, thanks for being patient with us, and helping us out when We needed it. All good things must come to a close sometime, and so, We leave dear old D. H. S. Wishing you, Iuniors and Sophomores, a most pleasant 1952-53. Goodbye and good luck! Girls' Physical Educ t' Instruct A CLASS IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION GIRLS' PHYSICAL EDUCATIQN . . . The girls' physical education classes of Durango Senior High are to be congratulated for their partici- pation in various sports. Their Instructor, Miss Thomas, has done a wonderful job in holding the girls' interest and creating enthusiasm. The arrangement of tournaments in both volley- ball and basketball gave the girls the friendly com- petition needed for fun and genuine interest. Swimming, tennis, tumbling, and all outdoor sports, including softball, were learned, improved upon, and enjoyed. Among other things, the girls took part in the annual Gym Demonstration. The theme carried out was that of a big circus. No need to say it was high- ly successful. For the tortyeone girls in the two classes, modern dancing was the highlight. This new idea proved very successful. Not only did the girls learn new dances, but it also gave them poise and self-confi- dence. A 4, x ,yi 1, ., ,2- Q15 3 iff , ., A ,JF 4? 2535? Director, Kermeih Phillippi cmd Director, Paul Zcrhrcrdkcr MUSIC . . . The music students started off this bang-up year by the annual magazine drive. It started the 12th of November and lasted until the 24th. Mr. Zahradka set the goal as Sl000. This year music students had a special reason for putting the campaign over-band uniforms. Helen Morgan and Bill Davenport were appointed team captains, with Anne Williams as General Manager. The Curtis Publishing Co. offered prizes for highest salesmen. Connie Austin and Helen Morgan were awarded the prizes. lncidentally, the goal was exceeded by 35500. The band mothers came up with the idea of a turkey dinner. The food for the dinner was donated by the mothers. The dinner Was held the 23rd of October. Proceeds went to the Band Uniform Fund. Band uniforms by this time were a reality. Durango business men donat- ed to the fund, and the School Board gave 352500. 1 .. The losing team, which was I-lelen's, gave a party for the winning team. The losers brought sandwiches and pop for a member of the winning team. After the picnic, which was held in the gym, Helen's team had some games planned. The favorite seemed to be the one where you pushed a potato with your head. Later there was swimming or dancing. The band put on a marching exhibition for each football game. Zahradka took the band to Alamosa to put the scare in our old rival. When the traditional Armistice game with Cortez came up, the band again took to buses for Cortez. Pep Band was organized to give our basketball boys spirit. The same Pep Band played at all the bonfires and snake dances. A big vote of thanks to the Pep Band for playing at Pep Assemblies. Our band did us proud at concerts in the new uniforms. Mr. Campbell of Penney's, spent a great deal of time getting them just so. They came just in time for the concert. The band marched up the aisles and on to the stage. There was standing room only to see the uniforms. Everybody from the drum major down to the piccolo was proud enough to burst. The Concert was an overwhelming success. Orchestra opened the pro- gram, followed by Girls' Glee, Boys' Glee, and Mixed Chorus and Band. There were several special solos. A rather different organization is Dance Band. This year Dance Band proved to be very good. Their debut was when they played for the Teen Canteen. The Dance Band was only to play for intermission, but they played until 12:00, by popular request. Ieanne Dannels is the vocalist. After months of preparation, at last came Fine Arts. The music organi- zations had their chance to perform beginning Friday. Sixteen different towns brought music organizations for the festival. Boys' Glee, Girls' Glee, and Mixed Chorus all received l ratings, doing credit to Durango. Saturday was high- lighted by a parade of all the bands. The Durango Band halted before Penney's and the A. and H. Bootery to salute Mr. Campbell and the Ashers for their help in outfitting the band. After the parade the bands went to the Fiesta Grounds for marching exhibitions. Again, Durango received a 1 rating. The Durango orchestra opened the evening program and the band was last: both received ratings. The following week State Music contest was scheduled. Durango took 249 students to Alamosa. Since each group received a l rating, each was entitled to go to the State Contest. Again, performance was tops. The band marched in the afternoon, with the Glee Clubs singing in the morning. Orchestras performed in the afternoon and bands in the 'evening. Aztec, Farmington, and Durango arranged to have joint concerts at the three towns. The first concert was at Durango on May 5. The band played at Aztec the 6th of May and Farmington the l2th. The annual Senior--directed concert marked the end of a highly eventful and successful year. Thanks to Mr. Zahradka who gave unselfishly of his time to make the music department a success. Our slogan was This year is it. It really turned out to be, too.
