Barbara Schultz Presentation of Diplomas and Scholarships Recessional l'li9h School Record of The Class of '5'l The Senior class of I95I started their high school days as all other Senior classes must do, as Sophomores. We, lke all other Sophomore classes, started out with the attitude of humble- ness and obedience to our elders-the Iuniors and Seniors, and that wide-eyed wonder charac- teristic of most Sophomores. We chose as the officers to head our class that year Iames Duren, president, Ward Lee, vice-president, Barbara Schultz, secretary, and Nancy Brinker, treasurer. Peggy Petty and Sonny Born were our represent- atives on the Student Council. Mr. Wendell Buckley and Mr. Frank Campbell were spon- sors. Our prom was one of which we were very proud. The theme was Cuanto la Gusta, and the gay colorful decorations carried out the theme very effectively. Our class picnic was- held near the end of our Sophomore year on Reservoir Hill. Like all picnics, it was loads of fun and a happy ending for our Sopromore activities. Then the class took on the proud name of Iuniors. Again, we started a school year with enthusiasm, but there seemed to be something lacking-yes, we'd lost a great deal of humble- ness and obedience, except of course to THE Seniors! Elmer Slaten as president, Mollie Car- anta, vice-president, Gerry Harrington, secretary, and Iames Duren, treasurer were the officers we elected to lead us trrough this Iunior year. Mari- lyn Paulek, Don Tanner, and Carl Snook were on the Student Council, and Mr. Harvey Hollar and Miss Sharley Pike were our sponsors. We were given the privilege of having the first prom of the year and since the date for our prom was December 1, we carried out a theme of Winter Wonderland. It was a wonderful prom and again we were proud of our hard work. Also, as Iuniors we were given the privilege of having candidates out of class for the DHS Homecoming Queen. The girls chosen as can- didates for this honor from our class were Rita Gallavan, Sue Pfeiffer, and Pat Maher. The final Iunior event that year was our class picnic, and we became much more adventurous this year and went to Bakerls Bridge for our picnic and back to the high school for swimming and dancing. Finally, the year we had been waiting for arrived . . . we are now Seniors, and we are quite proud of the fact. Now, of course we have lost our previous attitudes, and we find that an attitude of humbleness and obedience is di- rected toward us-anyway that's what we think! Since this was our last year, we wanted to make sure it was the best, therefore, we must have the very best leadership, and We elected the very best. Ronnie Dougherty was the president we chose, and Ronnie has shown by his hard work and faithfulness that we couldnlt have chosen a better president. Ir. Romero as vice-president, Rita Gallavan, secretary, and Neal Williams, treasurer, are the other officers and we pay tribute to each one for his fine leadership. Emery Percell has shown the enthusiasm and fine abil- ity that is needed by every student-body presi- dent, and again we pay tribute to a fine Senior student. We also thank our sponsors, Mr. Schneider and Mr. Cobb, for their counsel and hard work. As Seniors we have definite Senior activities, and each activity is something which each of us will look back upon as our fondest memories. Tacky Day, with all of us in our oddest make- ups, Senior Play as the speech class,s finest pro- duction, Senior Day at Fort Lewis where we, with the other Seniors of the Basin, were royally entertained by Fort Lewis College, the day we considered ours whether it was contrary to the teachers' wishes or not, and we had all that fun at Mesa Verde! Then, the times that we'll prob- ably remember above all the others-our Senior Prom preceded by the Senior Dinner, the night we chose to thank Durango High for all the wonderful memories we have of her. And finally, the night which we looked forward to for such a long time-Graduation. Yet we know that with this night many of our good times together will be ended, and an entirely new future is ahead of us. VVe hope and pray that each one's future is ever so bright and that success is in store for each of us. Yes, our graduation from high school has arrived. We are proud of our class because we are the largest class ever to grad- uate from Durango High, and We are proud in- dividually because we have arrived at a goal which most every one strives for, but which not every one reaches. To the teachers of our high school we owe a great deal of thanks for the fine preparation they have given us. To the Iunior and Sopho- more classes we wish you all the luck and happi- ness in the World. Goodbye and thanks! Personality ..... ......... ............ ..... Brains ......... Dancing ....... They are between the stages of treading lightly , as the sophomores do, and acting like hot stuff , which is the natural and well earned procedure for seniors. The class officers during the sophomore school year of nineteen forty-nine and fifty were Bill Pearce, president, Margaret Sharp, vice president, Marn Ann Serroni, secretaryg and Pat Bell, treasurer. The class was sponsored by Gladys Pfeiffer and Tommy Neal. Misfortune befell the class in their sophomore year when a member of the class, Pat Greer, met with an accident in the high school gymnasium. Several of his bones were broken and consequently Pat was unable to attend school for many months. Following the accident his classmates began a cam- paign to raise money to help pay for his medical expenses. The donors were given small tags bearing the words Pat Greer . The theme of the Sophomore prom held on March 24, 1950 was The Old Master Plaintern. The prom. programs were in the shape of an art- ist's pallet, and the servers were costumed as artists wearing smocks and berets. The sophomore class picnic was held at the B.P.O.E.. picnic grounds on the Florida in the spring of 1950. The class officers for the current junior year and successors of last year's sophomore officers are Davey Feller, president, Roy Angelini, vice president, Teresa Cummins, secretaryg and Jean. Nelson, treasurer. The sponsors for this in-between class are Frank Campbell and Vern- on Fuller. This class either has a jinx on it or it has run out of luck. During its first and only two years in the highschool it has been overtaken by bad luck. This year Bing Johnson, a junior boy, was flown to Denver in a mercy plane on October 1, 1950 with polio. Again the kind hearted, well- doing junior class rushed to the aid of one of its members. Another money raising campaign was successfully staged, This time the tags had Bing Johnson's name on them. The students were urged to send nim Christ- mas cards and birthday cards, which would also include valentine carols since his birthday is on Valentine's Day. He is still in the hospital in Denver and is not yet able to return. to school, but the students hope he will b-e very soon. The prom theme for the junior prom on November 20, 1950 was The Gypsy . At one end of the gym was a wagon representing a gypsy caravan and in the center of the floor was a campfire and on top of it a large kettle. The servers were arrayed in gypsy costumes. To raise money for their own class the juniors sponsored a basket- ball dance following the Farmington-Durango game on October twenty- seventh. This and their class dues payed for the prom and class picnic which was held in the spring. We know the juniors are looking forward to their senior year which is always more fun than any other year, and we hope they have just as good a time as the seniors of '51 did. THE sopuofvxoats Durango High School is proud of their Sophomore class this year. They have a membership of 160 students in their class, and the majority of these students are active in all school affairs. The Sophomores were very enthusiastic about all that they did. They added a lot to the pep of our pep rallies by building the wonderful bonfires, and helping prepare for the games. They elected as their class officers to lead them through their first year of high school life, Paul Koss, president, Iim- my Real, vice president, Rita Stratton, secretary, and Na- dine Leslie, treasurer. You've done a swell job, Sophomore class officers, and your class has thrived under your excellent leadership. Marilyn Brown and Iim Meade were the students the Sophomores chose to represent them on the Student Council. Alice Ballou and Warren Buckley were their spon- sors. After the Cortez-Durango basketball game here in Du- rango, the Sophomores sponsored a dance. It was a sure suc- cess. Another dance, sponsored by the Sophomores, and the one which they were very proud of was their Sophomore Prom. The theme was Harbor Lights, and they had it car- ried out so effectively that everyone seemed in a dreamy-eyed, but not too dreamy to have lots of fun. To end their activities this year, and to put a glorious ending on their Sophomore year, they went to Trimble Springs for swimming and a picnic. MUSIC RECCDRD Under the outstanding guidance of Paul Zahradka, the music organizations of Du- rango High School have had a commemorable year. The 60-piece band marched and played through hail, sleet, and snow at all of the home football games, and although Mr. Zahradka was hauled into Ukangroo courtl' during Homecoming and accused of losing a game because of his band, we believe that he and his organizations are the pride of th schoolw because of their enthusiastic school spirit and outstanding musical ability. The band, the 53-piece orchestra, the 69-voice mixed chorus, and the girls glee, with an enrollment of 139, were all a credit to our school at the annual high school concert, Fine Arts, and at the state music contests. The judges especially praised the mixed chorus, and said that our girls glee was one of the best theyid ever heard. Little did they know what a difficult time we wlere having trying to hold each other up during girls glee, and it's a good thing the audience couldn't see how we were stacked up on those chairs and tables and stands! The boys glee sang for the concert, and about stole the show with their rendition of The Thing. These five organizations participated in many outside activities this year, as did numerous soloists. The pep band was a vital part of our assemblies, when they played our school song it brought a lump to the throat of many a senior. Every music student of Durango High School is proud of the organization to which he belongs. Weire all thankful that we are fortunate enough to have Mr. Zahradka as our director, because he is hard to beat. Not only is he a capable music instructor, he is a friend to all, and we will never forget all that he has done for us, or the fun we've had together. He is a teacher that is always for the students, and therefore the students will always be for him.
