K i A-.f,-. M-. Al. 2 s S E 5 i E 3 s ' 'L 'NSN FW 1 I prerenting the 1 958 PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF duPONT MANUAL HIGH SCHOOL LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY Our mos! Wlbmmzlfle ffl?fl0:qfIfS af Manual v - i i l , . Three years ago we walked ' if into a huge, cold, impersonal ' building and felt very small and a little frightened. Since that day we have become an integral part of Manual. The school no longer seems cold and impersonal. lt is warm and friendly. A place where we spend nearly as much time as we do at home. Ti Talent shows, pep assemblies, games, con- certs, dances, and many other activities have drawn us closer to one another. We have celebrated victories and taken defeats in our stride. Past class days we have viewed as interested spec- tators, but apart from it all. That it would soon happen to us seemed iust a dream for the future. Then - after so much time - the first senior meeting. Other senior meetings followed, and taking the senior seats in assembly became perfectly natural. Now it is almost finished. Soon we leave the routine that has become familiar. There are places in all walks of life waiting to be filled. We have no idea what is to come, but we will always have our memories. They will live forever. Miss Marian M. Walsh I l In appreciation for the knowledge of English you have given many of us and for your fine work with the F. T. A., the senior class of 1958 is very proud and happy to dedicate the Crimson to you, Miss Walsh. Those of us .who have associated with you will always he indebted to you in many ways and will remember you when reviewing our days at Manual. We wish you happiness and continued success in the future. Page Four Wm A iffli y ,H A. ,,,Z, , -K .L li V I I The Senior class of 58,' is proud indeed to dedicate our Crimson to Mr. Ralph Kimmel. We hope in some small way this will serve to express our appreciation for a job well done as our teacher and as well as our coach. Page Five Mr. Ralph Kimmel ADMINISTRA T10 f MR. A. J. The Executive Board is the planning committee of the Student Council. Students are elected by members of their respective English units, and these students serve throughout their years at Manual. Character, leadership, an average of 80 per cent in each subject, and a good attendance record are the requirements for nomination to the Executive Board, and these standards have to be maintained. From the members of the Executive Board are chosen all of the officers of the All-Student Association. As the whole student government plan for our school depends on the Executive Board for guidance and execution of plans, it is important that its Eersonnel be chosen with care. The Board this year has been very efficient, alert, and as done an excellent job. The officers for this year are: Chairman -Jimmie Tyler Vice-Chairman - Bobby Taylor Secretary - Betty Bauer Treasurer - Mary Io Whitmarsh The senior members of the Board are: Preston Baugh, Mary Lou Cook, Beverly Hartwein, Joyce Hemdahl, johnny Smart, and Ronnie White. The junior members are: Frances Bernard, Mike Butler, Sandra Calhoun, Norma Catinna, Tommy Eddleman, Ann Lindsey, Tommy Roberts, and Elizabeth Wong. The sophmore members are: joe Banks, Sharon Cray, Frank Howe, jean Huffman, Mitch McConnell, Terry McCoy, Teresa Madison, julia Robinson, Danny White, and Trina Yanutola. Through self-govemment in school life, every student enjoys the opportunity of voicing opinions and electing representatives. Every homeroom elects three people to the Council: A Representative to attend the meetings and connect the homeroom with the Executive Board, an Alternate to assist the Representaive in every way, and a Publicity Chairman to publicize all Student Council activities. Q The primary functions of the Student Council are to help solve any problems which may arise and to promote student activities. Asch, had a very successful year, which began with band camp where ten wonderful days were spent. The band was privileged to put on a combined half-time show with Eastern's band for a nationally televised pro-football game. October 12, 1957, the hand attended the Southeastern United States Band Festival at Bristol, Tennessee, where they received a superior rating. In the spring the marching band made its final appearance of the year by marching in the Kentucky Derby Parade. In December the Concert Band, directed by Colonel Robert B. Griffith, and the Reserve Band, directed by Albert J. Asch, were organized. The Concert Band, after many hours of work, presented concerts in several Louisville schools and gave an outstanding performance in the State Music Festival. The climax of the year was the annual Spring Concert. The band would like to extend sincere appreciation to Mr. Asch and to Mr. Griffith, who both worked so diligently with them. This was considered quite an honor, having been the third consecutive year it was invited. The response to the Christmas Concert was tremendous, due to the hard wark of the new conductor, Mr. R. B. Griffith, with whom the orchestra is very happy to be working. The Orchestra has had a very pleasant year, with the Spring Concert, visits to other schools and salon groups. A11-district S j C. J. All-city Times All-city V All region Our first city contest was against Atherton, whom you will rmember had a poor season. We gave a good team effort in winning 61-41. A lot of interest was placed in our next ga.me against Butler as we were rated on a par with each other. We erased all doubt with a solid 81-65 victory with the scoring, equally divided between the first five. We continued our winning ways by adding a weak team, Ahrens, to our list of victims. We won 77-36. Our next two gameswere played out of town in the Campbellsville Tournament. We ripped Taylor County 73-44 and came from behind in the fourth period to ease past Greensburg 49-41 to win the championship. The following game was probably the most exciting of the year. We played our strong rival from the county, Eastern. We had to win twice because officials were confused between college and high school rules. The final score in three overtirnes was 54-52. The Big Reds played their next three games on the road and lost two. We were the last city team to lose a game as we lost to underrated Caverna 55-61. We beat a good Mayfield team 60-54 and were then beaten by powerful South Hopkins 68-83 efore returning home. We continued our dominance over Shawnee and kept a clean city record in win- ning 63-53. Led in scoring by Melear and Siers, we won our 12th game of the season over Campbellsville, on their floor, by the score of 75-60. Page One Hundred Dive Fothergill Joe Smith 5 M4021 .1-il. E? N....a-f The L. I. T., which brought in four of the top teams in the state, was next on our list. We beat! a good Russell County team 72-67 in going to the semi-finals. We played a great game even though we lost to strong St. Xavier by the score of 62-67. The outcome was decided in the last few seconds. Following our loss to St. Xavier, we came through with three brilliant victories. We trounced Flaget 80-59 and treated Owensboro the same way in winning 72-53. With scoring honors evened out, we tumed back Shelbyville 64-59 on their home court. In perhaps our best effort of the year, we repaid St. X in our regular, scheduled game by the decisive score of 51-43. Led by Melear,s 17 points, the team played a terrific game. We met two more tough opponents on our next outing. We ripped dangerous Breckinridge County 86-60 and tipped Somerset 61-59 to win our 19th game. Melear, Milton, and Siers led the way. Male, greatly improved over last season, gave us a good battle all the way and the game was up for grabs right down to the last minute. We finally pulled it out of the fire by 71-63 to win our 20th game. The Crimsons solved Athertonis slow-down, possession type ball by defeating the Rebels 60-42 in the first game of the district. We then disposed of Male in another hard fought contest 41-34. We took it on the chin in the finals losing to St. X by 74-62 but still made it to their Regional as runners-up. Page One Hundred One In the Regional we were able to handle Eastern, as we whipped our rival 54-45. Siers, 18 points led the victory. St. X caught us on a cold night and beat us 57 to 31. St. X went on to win the State Title. There were only two seniors remaining on the varsity at the end of the season. john Smart, 6'2 forward, and Dave Fothergill, 6'4 center, helped lead the Crimosns to a fine season record of 24 wins against only 5 losses. Rounding out Coach Riffey's first seven were Gerald Glur, 6'5 center, Ronnie Siers, 6'4 forward, joe Smith, 6'4 forward, and guards Leland Melear and Tom Milton, both at 6'0 . Under the direction of Coach Ral h Kimmel, the Crimsons won their Keighth state championship. With a season recors of 30-6, last yearls Reds were the winningest hi h school team in Kentucky. The team was led by captains George Bisig and Denny Rfbinson. This year's prospects for another ,successful season are bright, with nine of the 1957 champions returning, including four starting pitchers. We are looking forward to the first crack of the bat this spring and hope the team will continue its reign as king of Kentucky baseball. The team will be led this year by Captain Denny Robinson and Co-Captains Ronnie Barrow and Bobby Rudolph. The seniors are Bobby Baker, Bobby Borrow, Ronnie Barrow, Preston Baugh, Harold Booker, Billy Pierce, Tommy Rixman, Denny Robinson, Bob Rudolph, John Smart, Mike Waltrip, and Earl Gourley, student manager. 1957 Record 1958 Schedule MANUAL April 3 Vine Grove MANUAL 13 Vine Grove ....--. ------ 4 Charleston MANUAL 4 Vine Grove .------ ------ 5 Valley MANUAL 12 St. Xavier ...... ------ 8 MANUAL Male 6 Central ......- 10 St. Xavier MANUAL 7 Central .. . 1 1 Central MANUAL 6 Trinity ......... 12 MANUAL UK Freshman 3 Lafayette ..... 15 MANUAL Flaget 7 Lafayette ...,. 16 MANUAL Valley 7 Eastern ....... 17 Shawnee MANUAL 5 Eastern .......... ------ 1 8 Lafayette MANUAL 2 Charleston ...... ...... 1 9 MANUAL Eastern 12 Charleston ...... ...... 2 1 Ieffersonville MANUAL 17 Male ........... 22 MANUAL Atherton 1 Lafayette ..... 23 MANUAL Vine Grove 2 Fafayette ..... 24 Male MANUAL 15 Valley ......... 25 Owensboro MANUAL 4 St. Xavier ...... ...... 2 6 UK Freshman MANUAL 1 1 Central ....... 28 MANUAL Central 1 Flaget ......... 29 MANUAL St. Xavier 5 Valley ............ ......... 3 0 Fern Creek MANUAL 7 Shawnee ........... ......... 1 0 7 jeffersonville 9 MHY 15 Atherton ........ ...... 1 Flaget MANUAL 15 Greensburg .... ...... 2 Shortridge MANUAL 1 Greensburg .... ...... 5 MANUAL Shawnee 1 1 Atherton ..... 7 MANUAL jeffersonville 4 Flaget ..... 8 Atherton MANUAL 3 Shawnee ........ ...... 1 0 MANUAL Lafayette 11 Southern ........... ...... 1 2-17 ' DISTRICT 4 Western Hills 20-21 REGIONAL 5 Western Hills 24 MANUAL Western Hills 1 Shortridge ...... ,.,... 8 1 MANUAL Shortridge 10 Murray ........ 3 Lafayette ,.....,, ,,,,,, 1 Une 8 Owensboro 5-7 STATE TOURNAMENT Page One Hundred Three TRACK TEAM This year's track team appears to be shaping into what should be a winning team. The team will be built around six retuming lettermen, who are Derrick Jones, Gary Gray, Dennis Whitehead, Stewart Eads, Robert Davis, and William Napier. There will also be many other boys returning in each event. Derrick Jones, who ran on last year's state winning 880 relay team, will be running the 220 and running on the 880 and mile relay teams. Cary Cray will also run on the mile relay team. Joe Woodside should bring home points on the mile run along with points by Franklin Whitson on the shot and disc. Garnet Hoffman is showing good form on the low hurdles and should be a top contender in that event. The firstmeet will be the New Albany relays, which will consist of most of the teams from.Louisville and many from Southern Indiana. Under Coach Butch', Charmoli these boys should make a fine showing for Manual and bring home quite a few wins. Page One Hundred Four p GOLF TEAM XR X JW ' u ia .A il .QU A www?
