Senior Song CTune: Washington and Lee SWingJ We are the Eights of dear old Manual. We run the school indeed We do. We cheer her on to all her victories, And to her colors We'll be true. We w0n't forget 'those happy, happy days, Though soon We'll bid our friends adieu. So you can step aside, And give a smile that's Wide, For the high and mighty Eights. E-I-G-H-T-S- I I I I Eights I I I .fiieaaaff 102 THE CRIMSON Editorial Graduation, the day that so many of us have looked forward to with eager anticipation, has come at last, but this awaited day of celebration takes on more of an ap- pearence of solemnity as we reluctantly approached this un- forgetable milestone in our life. For the first time during our career at Manual we realize that with graduation we are losing something that now can only be relived within our hearts. When we were underclassmen, it seemed im- possible to us that anyone could ever become sentimental over graduation, but as we near the final day, deep inside of us we realize that the three years we have spent at Manual have been the happiest years we have yet exper- ienced. As we leave Manual, we would pass on only one thing, a word of advice to those remaining: The time still ahead of you at Manual may seem infinite now, but soon it will pass into the unforgettable past. If during this brief, fleet- ing period you give your best to Manual, make the most of every opportunity to better yourself as well as your school, and become a real integral part of Manual, she will not forget you when the time comes to reward these efforts. And now the Class of '51 bids farewell to the school that has been, and always will be the pride of everyone who has participated in her matchless spirit and timelessness. H. A. S. The more new members it re- ceives is a good sign that Manual athletics are increasing in strength and vigor. I would like to say that since this is the last Writing for the year, may the M Club always remain a strong backer and supporter of all athletics in which duPont Manual High School may ever participate. Denny Steineker, President THE CRIMSON '. - ,' ibggft . The Senior Crimson appreciates the support of the preceding Clubs in making this issue possible. These clubs are the ones that wished to be repre- sented in the Senior Crimson. The Editor Speak If C li l M S CHEER LEADERS THE CRIMSON 145 Cheerleaders This year's cheerleading staff has been one of Manual's best. The loss of three seniors, Patty Bates, Jacke Cottom, and Robert Cobb by graduation, will leave a big gap to be filled next year. Charles Billips, Head Cheerleader THE CRIMSON VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM THE CRIMSON 147 Football 1 94815 Manual recovered from their winless 1947 season this year, as new head coach, Mike Basrak, and assistant, Jim Casillo, led the Big Reds through an undefeated season and into the State Championship. Manual stopped Male 14-0 at Thanksgiving. Captained by Jack Speier and Benny Evans, the team has since placed eleven boys on college football teams. ' 19495 All-Southern Bunky,' Gruner lead the Crimsons to an- other successful season. They were upset early in the sea- son by Flaget and subsequently lost the State Champion- ship. They pushed Male off the field but couldn't score, and the big game ended in a 0-0 tie. Gruner repeated as All-City, All-State, and All-Southern halfback. 195055 A high-powered Red eleven this year started the sea- son red-hot but lost their win streak in the last three games. Male battered the Big Reds but scored only once as they Won 7-0. The Crimsons placed five boys on the All-City squad, including co-captains Steineker and Frederick. THE CRIMSON 149 Basketball 194815-49 Led by big center Sonny Bertelkamp and speedy Mar- vin Pilkenton, the Crimson quintet turned in a good sea- son. Under Coach Ed Binford, the Reds lost some tough games. They almost upset St. X. in the Regional, however, before falling. 194955-50 Manual ran into a rough time as they Went two months before Winning their fifth game. Led by Junior Don White- house and George Fusting, the big Reds took 3 city games. The J-V's blasted to a glorious 16-1 record, and prospects for next year looked good. 195015-51 Manual experienced a rebirth in basketball this year. Under ex-U. of K. great Dale Barnstable, the Reds took 30 While losing 3 and almost took the state championship. Guard Don Whitehouse, highest scorer in the city, made the all- state team, While center Phil Cookie Grawemeyer made the second. The graduating members of the team are: Dave Smith, Wally Watkins, Don Whitehouse, Ray Jones, Frank Hadden, and Tommy Jansing. 150 THE CRIMSON C TRACK TEAM TIIE CRIMSON 151 Track 1949 Led by the brilliant vaulting of Rapp and Myer's mile, the Big Reds took second in the state meet, behind Male's thinlies, The state meet, due to a muddy track, ruined some times which could have pushed the state record. Planck and Roy Burks were co-captains. 1950 The inexperienced thinlies were unable to do better than sixth in the State this year. They did have, however, a team which appeared would be good next year. 1951 The Manual thinlies are getting off to a fine start and will probably produce a fine squad this year. With their im- provements as the seasons progresses, they are certain to prove again to be one of the state powers. 152 THE CRIMSON N I ! SWIMMING TEAM THE CRIMSON 153 Swimming 1949 Swimming was revived as a sport at Manual this year. The Tankers, led by the free-style relay team of Jackson, Blythe, Wall, and Ryan, and Captain Skippy Thorpe, were runner-up in the city swim meet and the state meet. 1950 The Mermen again placed second in the state. For the second year We had a strong relay team: Osmer, Stoll, De- ters, and Lyon. The team was captained by Stuart Meyer and George King. 1951 This year George Clay's boys took fourth in the meet. Captained by Nick Osmer and Dave Ryan, the team had a better season record, although the others of the Big 4 placed before us. T THE CRIMSON BASEBALL TEAM THE CRIMSON 155 Baseball 1949 Ralph Kimmel's baseballers, led by Benny Evans and Bunk Gruner, turned in a fine season. In the Miller inter- city playoffs, the Reds fell to Flaget but beat Male three times. 1950 Led by Capt. Joe Eaton, the Crimsons turned in a fine season of 15 Wins, 6 losses, and 1 tie. The Big Reds were runner-up in the Miller Play-offs and the Regional. 1951 Coach Kimmel appears to have another fine team this year. With 14 returning lettermen and several brilliant pitch- ers the Crimsons will be shooting for the state championship. On April 21, against Lafayette High School of Lexing- ton, John Beetem, pitched a perfect game-the first time this has ever been done in the city or state in a high school game. 156 THE CRIMSON T Golf 1949 This year the boys, under the coaching of Ed Binford, placed tenth in the state. Bob Kirchner, Oliver Clark, and Ben Pulford led the Reds. 1950 Clark Wiggins, Pulford, and Schley led the Crimsons in Coach Binford's last year of coaching. The Reds again played well in the State and held one of the better city records. 1951 This year, under the coaching of Dale Barnstable, the linkers can look forward to a good season, despite the loss of several of last year's boys. faked 158 THE CRIMSON Wife: The new maid has burned the eggs, darling.
