The land for this building was bought from Mr. Hahn. Since that date many additions have .been added, including a shop, a cafeteria and a few additional class rooms. The first graduating class was in 1930 consisting of seven members. Since then 204 students have graduated from this school; 136 girls and 68 boys. The enrollment this year, 1947-48 is 361 which marks a considerable increase since 1930. The school is still growing and has a bright future for those eager students who are willing to work and accept it. Dunlap will definitely find a place in the history of tomorrow. 5 THE REFLECTOR ALLEGHANY COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD Seated left to right: Mr. M. C. It is my hope also that you students that have yet to reach the rank of Senior will have a burning desire to continue in school and a zeal to make use of and develop the brains that the good Lord has given you. It is the hope of the faculty that you all will do your work industriously and hon¬ estly so that you can leave your mark on mankind. 7 THE REFLECTOR Miss Dorothy Wolfe A. B. Degree English Mr. H. L. Although we started in four different schools, we finally got together at Dunlap. Our first seven years were spent trying to grasp the fundamentals for a founda¬ tion in later life. It was quite a struggle with all the ups and downs of measles, chicken pox, and scarlet fever but we managed to make the grade to high school losing only a few of our members along the way. Our Freshman class had an enrollment of nineteen, including Roselyn Ballard, Raymond Boone, Myrtle Bowen, Phyllis Crosier, George Dewese, Lucy Drummond, Clara Eggleston, Roselee Graham, Wade Griffith, Paul Mann, Jr., Carrie Sue Murphy, Harry Nickell, Mary Owens, Virginia Shay, Odelle Smith, Jesse Southall, Catherine Spencer, Irene Wickline, and Lewis Wilson. The outstanding event of that year was initiation. We were required to dress as mountaineers, chorus girls, and carpenters, bowing to the upper classmen and obeying them for the day. At the beginning of our Sophomore year our class had dwindled to thirteen. This loss included George Dewese, Roselee Graham, Paul Mann, Jr., Carrie Sue Murphy, Jesse Southall, and Lewis Wilson. The year passed rapidly and soon we found ourselves Juniors with only two more years to go. The Junior year was our first big year with the Junior-Senior Bafiquet and plac¬ ing five of our class on the Girls Basketball team. The class still grew smaller with Ray¬ mond Boone dropping, Harry Nickell entering Covington High School, and Catherine Spencer getting married. This left only ten. Now our Senior year is here and we hope it is our biggest and best year. Our class has increased by two. We first were joined by Harold Godby from Rupert High School who had been serving in the Army. Rose Matacia transferred later from Cov¬ ington High School. We also made history by becoming the first senior class to have three members get married. These are Roselyn Ballard, who is now Mrs. Roger Boone; Myrtle Bowen, Mrs. Lugher Kersey; and Phyllis Crosier, Mrs. Odell Martin. Members of our class who will receive diplomas in June are: Lucy Drummond, Virginia Shay, Harold Godby, Myrtle Bowen Kersey, Wade Griffith, Mary Owens, Odelle Smith, Rose Matacia, Clara Eggleston, and Irene Wickline. We shall leave school wandering down different roads and lanes, in many differ¬ ent professions. Some will be in business, nursing, teaching and general work, and some in matrimony. Whatever we choose we will always remember the good old Class of 1948. Daring that year approximately 100 books were purchased. In September 1947 the club was again organized consisting of 12 members. This club is a simple plan to induce teen-agers to read, love, and accumulate more good books at a low cost. ' It stimulates more non-required reading among students and enables them to purchase books regularly. 27 THE REFLECTOR ASSEI BLY CLUB First row: Myrtle Bowen Kersey, Catherine Eggleston Second row: Helen Eggleston, Martha Byer, Virginia Combs Third row: Billy Crosier, Odelle Smith, Doris McDaniel, Norma Cray The purpose of the Assembly Club is to help in the assemblies by presenting two programs during the school year and assisting other groups anytime that help is needed. Our members serve as reception committees for visitors. We plan to sponsor several movies during the year to aid in buying curtains for the stage. 28 THE REFLECTOR CHRISTIAN YOUTH CLUB Not Pictured Not Pic tured Not Pic tured Opp; er right block: Ruth Fridley, Roberta Graham, Iva Hepler, Ottlce Crance elen Plyraale, Second row: Meldonia Reed, Nancy Rickett, Kathlene Owens, Bessie Thompson, Betty Lou Brisendine. The Club has twent -seven members The hope of the club is that other schools will adopt the club so to widen the fellowship of Christain students and influence. 29 THE REFLECTOR HANDICRAFT CLUB First row: Ruthie 0 Connor, Dorothy Reynolds, Dorothy Dixon Second row: Julian Armentrout, Roy Hubbard, Charles Wilson, James Owens Third rov : Raymond Hayslette, William Armentrout, Margaret Blankenship The Handicraft Club was organized during the school year of 1947-4S for the purpose of learning to use hand tools and materials of different kinds. Some projects were making wooden letter openers, letter holders, toys, picture frames, and pot holders. Some plastic and leather work is being done.
