'WE A A 583.-iif X B FUTURE NURSES LANGUAGE ART Language Art, which gives rise to oral and written expression, is so important in a civilization where individual and so- cial contact is frequent. Students soon learn the necessity of clarity and positive- ness when attempting to transmit their ideas and thoughts. MATHEMATICS Daily living shows that there is a wealth of knowledge within the covers of books, magazines, and periodicals. Much of this can be obtained through compre- hensive observation and evaluation. The acquisition of information is part of liv- ing, but the better service is rendered when it is correctly imparted to others. This can be accomplished mainly through systematic study. This English class is a functional organization. GEOGRAPHY just as geographical boundaries have grown closer each year, so too have lan- guage patterns. Exchange students and teachers, foreign pen pals, and world wide travel for many, make a knowledge of other languages a must. This class in Spanish is a positive example of our ef- forts to meet some of the needs of a changing world. W SOCIAL STUDIES l2A5, under the capable supervision of Mr. Davage, is deep in study of world problems during the History period. De- veloping an awareness and understanding of the many problems that face them, cause these students to give the situation serious thought. DRIVER EDUCATION Mr. Richard Brown stands in the back- ground while watching these seniors ob- serve this thing that we call an automo- bile with curiosity and amazement. An understanding of the mechanical func- tions of the automobile, learning the laws that govern drivers, and creating an awareness of individual responsibilities are a few of the areas covered in this class. HISTORY Here is a class dealing with historical as- pects of democracy. Mr. Bainder, the in- structor, leads his class in the develop- ment of an appreciation of our democrat- ic form of government. Marginal knowl- edge of American democratic principles is an asset to the formation of well in- formed citizens. INDUSTRIAL ARTS Mr. Lancaster, chairman of the Industrial Art Department, works along with his senior boys instilling within them the im- portance of educating the hands as well as the mind. Properly trained craftsmen are always in demand. These fellows seem to be taking their work seriously. MATHEMATICS l2A4, under the leadership of Mr. Leroy Taylor, is going all out to get this ad- vanced form of mathematics. Noting the facial expressions, I would judge that this problem is no cinch, but everyone is de- termined to conquer it. That type of per- severance carries over into actual life problems. CLOTHING The needle work of these senior girls is something to see and admire. Mrs. Park- er, their instructor, is proud of the ac- complishments of these ladies. Practical coordination of mind and body helps to prepare these students to become the type of citizen the community desires. CHEMISTRY More and more emphasis is being placed upon the importance of guided scientific training. During the laboratory perod students get an opportunity to develop scientific knowledge and understandings. The world is waiting for them, providing they are prepared. MATHEMATICS Mr. Henson is attempting to give his stu- dents the individual attention so neces- sary in modern education. Well planned work and interested students create a healthy atmosphere. PRINTING Printed publications have been the pri- mary media for the tabulation of the his- tory of civilization. Today volumes of publications roll off the press every few minutes. The skills developed in school serve as a foundation for future success. TYPING This room represents one of the most heavily used rooms in the school. Oppor- tunities in the field have encouraged many young ladies to prepare themselves for worthwhile employment. Here we IIOIC serious preparation in action. MUSIC The music period provides many relaxing and enjoyable moments for most of the students. Through a knowledge of the background of many types of music, a deeper appreciation and understanding of all mankind is attained. BUSINESS l2Al is really taking this work seriously. Following the directions of Mrs. Brown, their instructor, these young students will soon enter the outside world prepared to render desirable service. I if DRIVER EDUCATION 3 JUNIOR RED CROSS SPIQCTATORS Administrative and faculty members fol- low the football team all the way to Kirk Stadium. so We C7, The Queen Part of the half-time activities include the public presentation of the queen and her court by our principal, Mr. Robert P. Diggs. The festivities did not end here, but were climaxed by a gala homecoming dance at the school later in the evening. Annual Homecoming Came HOMECOMING QUEEN And what a queen . . . Carolyn Tate qcenterj. Miss Homecoming of Dunbar High School, was elected by popular vote by the entire senior high high students of the school. High standards must be met in order to qualify for the honor of reign- ing as queen: therefore, the queen in our school is truly representative of the best. 9- W INTRODUCINQ THE JUNE CLASS oF 1957 . :Q ' .W ,X b i f f. xi X I Q TIS!
