Be the Best Whatever You Are N. Cole After June 'I953 we shall probably never be together collectively again. Most of us shall prob- ably never meet each other for a long time. What has this big old world in store for us beyond these secure walls of Dunbar? How will we get along on our own? It is customary to receive a going-away present 'from mother or father when you leave home. Our Mother Dunbar, has given us guidance and inspira- tion for a long time. Now, I, a fellow traveler have a gift for you, not very material or tangible, but it may prove very valuable. My little gift is a certain effort for you to put on, like you would put on a dress or suit only you may keep my gift on for a life time. This little gift will be a morale booster, and help you to say to yourself, Wherever I hap- pen to go, I shall do my best, in whatever I may do. Whatever you may do is for you, and you alone, to decide. Some of your present dreams may be- come shattered by some unavoidable obstruction but please don't lose faith in yourself. During your travels, you will find much work to be done. If your dreams have been shattered temporarily, then work earnestly with something else, close at hand, and bigger things will come your way. Maybe in the end, your hopes and dreams through all the years will come true. Then too, if you are iust lucky and the road of your journey has been smoothed out, don't forget my present. Don't be mediocre. Accept my gift and always strive to be a little better than the best. In other words, make your job professional by doing your best. If you happen to be a cook, then be the best cook. Make your chocolate cake as high as mountains. If you should be a porter, then be the best porter. Make your floors gleam, even in dark- ness. lf you are a housewife, then be the best house- wife by making your house a real home for a happy family. If you should be a teacher, lawyer or a doctor, then be the best. Always give the best you have to your students, clients or patients, and you'll be richer for it. In saying goodbye, until we meet again, please accept my gift honestly, the road ahead of you will be dark sometimes and this gift may even serve you as a torch. If so, then hold the torch high, as you go nigh, and be the best, whatever you are. Theme taken from the poem Be The Best What- ever You Are by Douglas Mallock. A promising group of Dunbar gentlemen. The Future Business Men of America. N..

The Burning Flames of Our Success Bernice Tubman At last that long awaited day has arrived- Graduation. We have followed in our brother or sister's inspiring footsteps. Have they really been our inspiration? Who should be invited to stand and share the applause after we march off the stage? To me our parents have been our shining star guid- ing towards reaching our goal. It was mother who didn't attend club meeting because she wanted to help us with our homework, who fixed our break- fast every morning when she could have been lying in bed, who sacrificed her Xmas coat for our prom gowns. lt was father who worked overtime to give us financial aid, who gave us money for books and gym clothes that we needed or have lost. Both parents gave us love, happiness, cherished moments and encouraging words. They have built us up where we were torn down and strengthened us where we were weak. All through the years, the thirteen long years, their dreams have been ful- filled as well as ours. We can never do enough to thank our parents! Graduation isn't enough. Let us continue to strive to become future, dependable leaders. Let us thank God for our parents who are indeed the Burning Flames of Our Success. What Next After Graduation Dolores Young Graduation marks for many of us a most im portant step lt will close the door on the awkward adolescent age and open the door to independence We are thankful for our years at Dunbar which have prepared us for crossing from one era to another Nevertheless we have to answer for our selves the question of what comes after graduation ln the years to come many of us will embark as doctors lawyers teachers and stenographers and also play leading roles in the lives of others There are many opportunities and positions in the world today for the graduate The careful assistance that has been given to us in the development of ourselves at Dunbar will enable us to become successful adults in the World of Tomorrow The future is up to us Hall of Hits Addie Small Margo Bryan lm Gone You Know I love You Takes Two To Tango You re My Inspiration You Belong To Me Its Been A Long Time Teardrop: From My Eyes No Graduation My Story Ooh Ooh Ooh Missing Escorts Bureau My Song l2A Commencement Restless Heart Dunbar Junior Senior High Whats The Matter Now Prom Night Reeling And A Rocking Diploma I Dont Know 6 Years at Dunbar Trying Night Before Graduation Being Sent To The Office Dawn Dance If Ill Go To College Night Before The Test Being late For Class Alma Mater I G .
