Be the Best Whatever You Are N. Cole After June 'I953 we shall probably never be together collectively again. Most of us shall prob- ably never meet each other for a long time. What has this big old world in store for us beyond these secure walls of Dunbar? How will we get along on our own? It is customary to receive a going-away present 'from mother or father when you leave home. Our Mother Dunbar, has given us guidance and inspira- tion for a long time. Now, I, a fellow traveler have a gift for you, not very material or tangible, but it may prove very valuable. My little gift is a certain effort for you to put on, like you would put on a dress or suit only you may keep my gift on for a life time. This little gift will be a morale booster, and help you to say to yourself, Wherever I hap- pen to go, I shall do my best, in whatever I may do. Whatever you may do is for you, and you alone, to decide. Some of your present dreams may be- come shattered by some unavoidable obstruction but please don't lose faith in yourself. During your travels, you will find much work to be done. If your dreams have been shattered temporarily, then work earnestly with something else, close at hand, and bigger things will come your way. Maybe in the end, your hopes and dreams through all the years will come true. Then too, if you are iust lucky and the road of your journey has been smoothed out, don't forget my present. Don't be mediocre. Accept my gift and always strive to be a little better than the best. In other words, make your job professional by doing your best. If you happen to be a cook, then be the best cook. Make your chocolate cake as high as mountains. If you should be a porter, then be the best porter. Make your floors gleam, even in dark- ness. lf you are a housewife, then be the best house- wife by making your house a real home for a happy family. If you should be a teacher, lawyer or a doctor, then be the best. Always give the best you have to your students, clients or patients, and you'll be richer for it. In saying goodbye, until we meet again, please accept my gift honestly, the road ahead of you will be dark sometimes and this gift may even serve you as a torch. If so, then hold the torch high, as you go nigh, and be the best, whatever you are. Theme taken from the poem Be The Best What- ever You Are by Douglas Mallock. A promising group of Dunbar gentlemen. The Future Business Men of America. N..
