Since Homecoming, Nov. 15, when I first be- came a part of the Dulles Viking clan, the Viking football went to the State Finals, the basketball team rated high in district, many students achieved outstand- ing scholastic ratings, Dulles teams and individuals have shown the Vikings to be champions in many inter- scholastic league athletic and literary contests, the FFA, Industrial Arts Club, Band and other student or- ganizations have scored high in their competitive con- tests. This is the year we wore out the Victory Flag. Why, it was because of this Viking spirit that I ever came to Dulles in the first placel The Vikings stirred up a whirlwirid of school spirit that blew through their hearts and pocketbooks to collect the funds neces- sary to purchase a nine-foot high fiberglass mascot-- that's mel I am an ex- ample--a symbol--of what can be accomplished through the tremendous spirit of the Vikings and I shall be proud to stand in the doorway of Dulles High School as an honorary repre- sentative of that spirit! We of the Viking Staff, in compiling this pictorial record of the 1963-64 school year, have attempted to present a composite history of the activities as well as the spirit of John Foster Dulles High School. We sincerely hope that it brings you pleasure now and in the years to come. THE VIKING STAFF Beth Clute Editor -in-Chief Alma Mater Dulles High, we pledge to you, As each year goes passing by, We'll be loyal, we'll be true. We will keep your banner high, May we always bring you Hail to you, red, white and blue Honor, Glory, and Acclaim, Praise your exalted name, W TABLE A A OF 11, Q' CONTENTS ,ff'fV1xx., ?f4yQ ,whhww SR vwly' FAC TY f?5 -'ADWWWSTRHUON ' - QLA S555 + QI SPORTS i FAVORITES ' X 5 QRQANmZATm01x157 25 l AQTIVVHES 41 15 1 Q ffl' I, iff x S . if X7 1 X , S 4 f v- XL7 S f Annual Staff L-R: B. This award represents a clean sweep of all areas of competition: Marching, Concert Playing and Sight Reading, Throughout the school year 49 high school bands, representing all classifications in this twelve county region, participated in the various contest events. Of these, only 3 received the Sweepstakes Award. This achievement by the Dulles Band came as a climax to an outstanding year which saw the band performing at 15 football games, various public concerts and parades, placing 6 students in the All-District Band and 1 in the All-Region Band, winning 17 First Division medals at the Regional Solo and Ensemble Contest and entering 7 in the State Solo and Ensemble Contest which was held in Austin in June. K Ax? ,H A' I - C The 1963 football season started with an exciting win over the Bellville Brahmas, 13-2. The next week the Vikings marked up another win over the Alvin Yellowjackets, 13-6. Continuing their success, the Vikings beat Dickinson, 27-6. The first defeat of the season came at the hands of the Katy Tigers, 37 -20, but the Vikings, with never dampened spirits, returned the following week to trounce Ganado, 28-O. The final pre- district game with Mt. Carmel 6 and Dulles 21, set the Vikings up for the best year in the school's history of football. NEEDVI LLE - O DULLES - 14 Charles Hauerland scored the first touchdown and Ralph Senior kicked the extra point soon in the second half, An interruption by Johnny Marks set the Vikings up for their last touchdown. Red Binford on a keeper crossed the goal line from the sixth and Senior kicked the extra point. BOLING - 14 DULLES - 3 Despite the fact that both teams fought valiantly, it was not until the fourth quarter that either team scored. Ralph Senior kicked a 26 yard field goal which proved to be Dulles' only score. Boling's Watkins received a scoring pass. A Dulles fumble on the 12 yard line set up Boling's second touchdown. SANTA FE-0 DULLES-49 The first and second touchdowns were scored by Ralph Senior scored twice before the half. George Tanner started in the second half with two touch down passes, the first to John Keller, and the second to Gilbert Mundkowsky. Royce Reams added extra points and several first downs in the second half. The Indians failed to make a single first down. SWEENY -O DULLES - 15 Ralph Senior scored the only touchdown in the first half and in the 3rd quarter he kicked a 25 yard field goal. Charles Hauerland scored the final touchdown of the night with powerful runs through the line. Senior was the work-horse of the night gaining 187 of the Vikings total 315 yards. The stubborn Viking defense held the Bulldogs to only 72 yards. HONDO-0 DULLES - 9 A 23 yard field goal by Ralph Senior put Dulles' first 3 points on the scoreboard in the second quarter. Returning from the half, Red Binford hit Bill Tise for a 38 yard scoring pass. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter and Dulles retained its 9-0 lead. LIBERTY - O DULLES -20 The bigger they are, the harder they fall! The Vikings were out-weighed at every position by the 240 pound Panther defensive line, but surely not out-played. Charles Hauerland scored the first two touchdowns by brute strength and determination. Ralph Senior made the final score which cinched the semi-final championship. PALACIOS - O DULLES - 19 A Palacios fumble, recovered by Dulles set up Charles Hauerland's touchdown. Just before the half, Ralph Senior climaxed several good runs by crossing the goal line. The third touchdown was added by quarter- back, Red Binford in the fourth quarter. Ralph Senior's conversion brought the final score to 19-O. SINTON -20 DULLES - 30 Ralph Senior made the spotlight at Victoria and scored 24 points against the Sinton Pirates. Charles Hauer- land scored the remaining six points and added much necessary yardage at critical points in the game. School spirit was at its peak with this victory over Sinton to whom we lost the quarter-finals in the 1962- 63 season. State Playoff On December 21, 1963 at Waco, Texas, we met to determine the AA State Football Cham- pionship. Our opposition was the favored Rockwall Yellow Jackets. From the opening kickoff, which we received, it was a grimly fought battle every literal inch of the way. The half found the score dead-locked O-0. In the third quarter Ralph Senior broke loose for three substantial gains which he climaxed by crossing the goal for our first and only score. Our attempts at conversion failed. Doggedly through the fourth quarter we maintained our 6-O lead. Then---the bombshelll With 35 seconds remaining Rockwall threw a desperation, 4th down pass which tied the scorel Then they converted. Shaking our heads in disbelief, we felt like the fabled bad dream . . . perhaps it hadn't really happened . . . perhaps we weren't really there. At any rate, it was a game in which players and spectators alike ran an emotional gamut--from complete elation to utter dejection--as the accompany ing photographs so poignantly depict. fanior Varsity Football Team FIRST ROW: R.
