Classes and labs may lose importance in our per- spective now and then as we fall into the habit of considering them daily, repetitive tasks; but in clear moments we realize they are the real center of our education. Chemicals drip into an enamel receptacle as sure hands guide the measured flow. And in the lecture hall minds receive another flow- — of knowl- edge — hands, glasses, pens to the mouth somehow facilitating our concentration. Bent head, crooked elbow, crossed knee signify some mechanism of thought in high gear, leading to a discovery in anatomical exploration or a sudden clarity of under- standing in French class. 23

Sometimes we retreat for shelter to buildings, arch- ways, umbrellas; but at other times, feeling dramati- cally romantic, we venture into night, rain, snow, moonlight. We wait for snow, tray-sliding, frozen fountains, snow quad-ball — for night, darkness, moons, walks — for rain, puddles, reflections.
