Since its establishment in 1955, the Duke group has been consistently active in promoting its aim of service to the community as a whole. As the only service organization, per se, at Duke, this fraternity met once a week to plan the programs which it sponsored during the year. The group did mainte- nance work at the Child Guidance Center, prepared Christmas baskets for charity, sponsored a contest for CARE, and held a rummage sale in the spring. Led by Talcott Avera as Secretary-Treasurer and Dave Allen as President, Alpha Phi Omega this year successfully furthered its aim of service through these various proj- ects. The history of the debate team at Duke began in the early days of the University, first being sponsored by the Literary Societies and later set up as a separate or- ganization. The present era of debate was initiated when Professor Joseph C. Weatherby was brought to Duke to head forensic activity. Professor Weatherby guides the team in its objective of giving interested students the opportunity to develop logical thinking and effective speaking habits through participation in intercollegiate debate. Fifteen debate tournaments and 175 intercolle- giate debates were on the agenda for the 40 member squad this year. Debate Team Row 1: E. Logan, T- Miller, V. Parrott, K. Shaw, C. Carlberg, S. Bench and Bar The Bench and Bar, founded on the Duke campus in 1935, was one of the first pre-law undergraduate organ- izations in this country. Many other college pre-law groups have patterned themselves after the Bench and Bar, a group composed primarily of undergraduate men interested in making a career in the law. It was organized not to develop lawyers but to be a cooperative center for intelligent legal thought and to give under- graduates a better insight into the study of the law and the legal profession. This year the society ' s fifty members heard speakers on various branches of the law, featuring law school professors and practicing lawyers, and held discussion groups with law school students. They also saw, legal films with an explanation of the points of law and participated in a mock trial. This year J. Francis Paschal of the Law School served as Advisor to the group, and Thomas E. Senf served as President. ToM Senf Bench and Bar President I Row 1: S. Hopkins, R. Briggs, T. Senf, A. .Adams, J. Williams. Row 2: J. Gibson, T. Grav, L. Ingram, M. Sandstcad, R. Fleischer. Row 3: F. In addition, this body is responsible for the standardization of the rules governing the annual elections. This October the Board administered the election of the freshman class officers and two fresh- man senators. The two political parties on campus — the Campus Party, this year under Charlie Waters, and the Union Party, headed by Carroll Starling — come under the jurisdiction of Elections Board. These two organiza- tions operate solely for the selection of student govern- ment officers, providing the machinery by which cam- pus leaders are nominated for offices. Functioning ac- tively in the spring, before and during the campaigns, the parties usually convene separately for two sessions. At any other time, the party officers comprise the only working membership. Joel Arrington, as 1960-61 Chairman of Elections Board, supervised the elections in which nominees of the Campus Party and those of the Union Party competed for student government offices under the newly standardized election rules.
