Including the State Tournament in April, the speech team attended thirteen tournaments extending from Cheyenne in one corner of the state to Cody and Sheridan in the other. In addition, the squad hosted its own tournament in November, which was attended by eight schools from throughout the state. The team captured twenty awards that merited trophies in various events in addition to thirteen certificates of merit recognizing outstanding speakers and finalists. Included were two sweepstakes trophies recognizing outstanding team effort In terms of overall effort, the team achieved a degree of excellence throughout the state that is rarely accorded to smaller schools such as Dubois. Epps were always late ... we didn’t always have trumpets. The only class that drinks pop regularly and gets to lunch first. “He’s a Guitar Man” This is the music of the guitar and musical friends, some of whom do not use musical instruments to make their song. Men who love one another, men who are always in love with lovely ladies, children, dogs, cats; with Old Ma Nature at her best and at her worst, men who can still laugh and cry. Men who have paid their dues to the unknown cashier, men who can accept their own mistakes and the mistakes of others. It’s all living, you know. From the first game at Meeteetse, where we started our year a little too soon, it was evident we had a lot to offer our competition. It was exciting to watch the pride and skill mold together from individual players into a working team, striving toward the one goal of going to STATE! A first for many of these girls. The goal was reached, we had some joys and disappointments and shared a fun part of living! I enjoyed this season and was pleased to have the opportunity of sharing with these fine young women. Go for it. Tina! Basketball season was enjoyable for fans and participants this year. Positive strides were made toward putting Dubois back where it belongs—near the top of the Western Regional Conference. I feel that the greatest obstacle was removed this season—that being a negative attidue. I believe we have the best fans in the state at least the most vocal—and with support like this from fans and students, we hope to bring Championship Basketball back to Dubois. One thing for sure—our kids are winners! CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Don’t worry guys, we’ll win!; Remember your last try, Scheer?; Two Points!; Foul!; Where Is It?; Up, Up Away!? I’m going to make THIS one! I KNOW that I can make this! Here it comes, Debbie . . .! Nice jump shot, Tina! Oh, my gosh . . . what now? Well, what do we do now? 1977 saw the girl’s basketball team make their mark on the Western Regional Conference. They were seen at state finals for the first time, hopefully to return next year. The varsity season record was 15 wins and 1 loss. In district tournament the record was 2 wins and 1 loss. State record was 1 win and 2 losses. The girls showed great improvement and skill throughout the season; unfortunately, the shine just wasn’t enough for district and state. They performed well with style and class. As coach of this fine bunch of girls, I was very proud of them. The Junior Varsity squad also had a tremendous season, 11 wins and one loss—a remarkable record for a JV team. It has been my pleasure to be “Coach” for both the Varsity and Junior Varsity girl’s basketball teams at Dubois High School. —R. J. Gymnastics Gymnastics was taken up as a competitive sport for both girls and boys this year in Dubois High School. The four competitive areas in women’s gymnastics are floor exercise, balance beam, uneven parallel bars, and side horse vaulting. The six competitive areas of men’s gymnastics are floor exercise, the single high bar, parallel bars, long horse vaulting, the pommel horse and the rings. Competition consists of compulsory and optional routines. Compulsories are routines that have been made up by a committee and must be followed to the exact text they have written and the same music they have chosen. Floor exercise is probably the most spectacular and artistic of all the events. It combines flexibility, agility and strength in a continuous pattern or movement. It affords creativity and artistry on the part of the performer, and allows for individuality. A gymnast strives to produce routines that require strength, flexibility, and tremendous agility in what appears to be an effortless performance. Gymnastics is a sport that gives the participant an opportunity to compete and achieve truly rewarding individual success.
