CLASS HISTORY On a brught day un September of 1945 we as a group of green freshmen were welcomed to Du Pont Hugh School Under Mr Fergusons guudance we were finally able to find ourselves and to locate the proper classrooms After unutuatuon we really began to feel at home and had organuzed our class wuth Bull Smuth as Presudent The chuef class proyect that year was the presentatuon of our class play A Case of Sprxngtume under the durectuon of our sponsors Nfrs Gwunner and Nfuss Elluott As freshmen we were well represented un athletucs O the football team we had H Etter and R Smuth The yunuor varsuty basketball team uncludung four of our classmates was runner up that year D Hucks was a member of the basketball team whuch won the reguonal champuonshup that year Too quuckly vacatuon was over and we trudged back as sophomores Although we were sorry to lose Mr Ferguson we readuly welcomed Mr Brunkley and mar veled that grass began to grow un the path to Dupon tonua As Bull Smuth had proved to be a good leader we re elected hum as class Presudent Thus year we were fortunate to have as our sponsors Muss Noland and Muss Osborne However we regretfully watched Muss Noland leave at mud term to marry Congressman Pruest Thus year our class was represented un many actuvutues P Skelley was attendant to the football queen R Denny led the junuor varsuty football team R Smuth and H Etter were agam on the varsuty un basketball the yunuor varsuty won the champuonshup wuth M Hmson B Hunt L Cook G Gore and E Shedden boostung the team to vuctory Junuor year by electung Carson Mannung for our Presudent Muss Cowgrll and Mrs Mayor were our sponsors In the sprung under the durectuon of Muss Cowgrll we success fully presented as our class play Ameruca s Boy Fruend Thus year we had more representatuves than ever un football Those letterung were R Smuth H Etter B Smuth E Eubank C Mannung E Blythe J Nfcliunney and F Pendley B S Donnell and-I Clay were attend ants to the football queen Agaun we took prude un our basketball teams The boys won the Interscholastuc League Champuonshup Our class was represented by E Shedden G Gore j Mutchell B Hunt R Smuth L Cook M Hunson and M Wulson ln gurls basketball we were represented by D Nl Ruves captaun D Hucks alternate captaun and D McCaleb In tennus D Hucks blazed her way to the top becomung singles champuon of the Interscholastuc League The boys team was runner up That brulluant advance un sports vsasnt stopped as our baseball team became both Interscholastuc and Re guonal champuon C Mannung L Cook A Bradley B Games NI Hunson j Nlutchell B Smuth NI Wvulson and Ralph Denny represented us un that Our golf team wuth E Shedden R Smuth and P Hawkuns representung us was state runner up D Hucks was the representatuye to Gurls State and Bob Florence and j Gray to Boys State E Shedden was selected by the faculty and stu dents to go to the Red Cross Leadershup Camp Then as a crownung achuevement of the year we were hosts at the annual junuor Senuor Banquet Through the unturung elforts of Vrs Nfayor and the class thus was a great success -kt last our dream seemed to be realuzed we were sophustucated senuors Agaun C Mannung was elected class Presudent and we were proud of the followung senuors as our Student Body officers Presudent j Gray Vuce Presu dent B Smuth Secretary Treasurer C Calkun Sergeants at Arms D Hucks and R Smuth Thus year we fortunately had the opportunuty to par tucupate un a presudentual electuon After an enthusuastuc campaugn un whuch two senuors took an acuve part the Democrats won Joe Gray represented the Democrats and D Hucks the Duxuecrats when the tume came for our annual class party after much deluberatuon we decided to have a square dance As a result of reasonung duscussung debatung and plead ung ut was very successfully held un the gym Then came the tume to get our class rungs and to have graduatuon puctures taken How busy we were getttng materual for our annual' J Gray yunuor edutor last year was the able edutor un chuef thts year All thus took tume but under the leadershup of Wluss Perry Muss Wulluams and Mr Ruchards our sponsors ut was a pleasure Our class gauned a wealth of valuable unformatuon by sendung representatuves to the state leguslature and to the Unesco meetung As a class we have mauntauned a hugh scholastuc average throughout hugh school C Calkun C Adaur J Dedman B j Pugh and J Gray have some of the hughest averages ever to be achueved at Du Pont Carolune Calkun us vale ductoruan and Carolyn Adaur us salutatoruan j Gray was R Medal Our class was outstandung not only at Du Pont but also throughout the state C Mannung was elected presu dent of the State Dustrubutuve Educatuon Assocuatuon B Hunt was presudent of the Davudson County junuor Red Cross and D Hucks was secretary of the Davudson County Safety Councul R Smuth and H Etter were co captauns of our football team on whuch nuneteen senuors lettered In gurls basket ball we had D Hucks captaun Dorus NlcCaleb alternate captaun and D Ni Ruves Our boys had an unusually successful basketball season wuth E Shedden captaun R Smuth B Gaunes L Cook J Mutchell M Wulson M Hmson and B Hunt
