The Guiding ughr' BOARD OF EDUCATION MEMBERS-First row: Howard E. Baker, Frank J. Rovvbotham, Wesley H. Middle ton, President, Ray McNab. Second row: Francis W. Larmore, Jesse C. Gaige George C. Sengenberger. 6 Your education in high school has brought you one great advantage among many, which is the opportunity to choose your future career. Whether you attend college, training school, or take on-the- iob training your diploma makes this possible. Future success depends on you. The same habits of study acquired in public school will apply in all learning situations. I congratulate you on achieving the goal of graduation and wish you success. HOWARD E. BAKER Superintendent ADMINISTRATION During medieval times there developed the interesting art of heraldry whereby noted families established coats of arms. Of the many heraldic designs and mot- toes probably the one with the word VERITAS, meaning truth, was used more than any other. Just as TRUTH was a significant word and respected principle in the Middle Ages, so today we hold it in high regard. I compliment you, as a graduating class, on your high standards, knowing that you are fully aware of the impor- tance of TRUTH in your school life. May I now recommend it to you as a guid- ing Iight throughout life, trusting you to learn further of its importance with regard to happiness, honor and freedom. NORMAN ROWELL Principal Your graduation as a member of the class of 1955 will climax your high school career and pleasant associations at Draper. A year from now each of you will have taken his place in an adult world either on a job or in a school where you can get advanced training. We hope what you have learned at Draper will help you achieve true success and happiness. Our best wishes go with you. ESTHER L. Mll.l.ER Director of Guidance GUIDANCE Congratulations to all the members of the Class of i955 who have successfully reached this important turning point in their careers, that of high school grad- uation. You have been one of the best classes to graduate from our school, both in the area of scholastic achievement and in social activities. Yours is a high school record of which you can be lus- tifiably proud. As you leave our school, may we wish you every success in your future activities, whether they be additional education for the future, or work in the world of industry. The educational back- ground you have acquired in high school will be of great importance to you in your endeavors. We trust the future will bring you every success and real happi- ness in life. We were enthusiastically greeted by the upperclassmen who were armed with shoe polish and lipstick to mark us as Freshmen. The one bright spot in our Freshman year was our play. It was called Life With Willie, and was directed by Mrs. Ruff. It starred Kathleen Perry and Chuck Swatling. The play was very goocl, and we were all proud when Chuck got the award as the best actor. MISS CHRISTINE KEITH SENIOR DEANS MRS. IVERNA HARRINGTON As Sophomores, the door of Draper society opened before us. Our classmates became hope- ful candidates for the school clubs and some of our boys formed a dance band, The Starlighters, which was very success- ful. September, 1953! This date was very important. Finally we had gained the honor and prestige that goes with being a full-fledged upperclass- man. We had our first class meeting under the guidance of Miss Keith, Miss Chouinard, Mr. Car- osella, Mrs. Weir, and Mr. DuMond. We elected Ted Triebel as president, Art DeMania as vice pres- ident, Sandra Bove as secretary and S a n d r a Boyce as treasurer. Bob Papineau was our ser- geant-at-arms, but he left and Spencer B i rt took over. Two important events will always be remem- bered in connection with our Junior year. In the spring of our Junior year we received the disting- uished sign of the up- perclassman - our rings. Then . . . 42 MISS MARGUERITE CHOUINARD SENIOR DEANS MRs. MARY WIER nl 'EQ' DEEP CORAL MIST . . . ln May came the Junior P r o m , another never -to - be - forgotten event. The theme was Deep Coral Mist and the gym was decorated to give an under-the-sea effect. lt was really mar- v e l o u s. The beautiful girls and handsome fel- lows gliding across the floor surely will not be forgotten. T h e evening was climaxed when Ka- thy Grupe was crowned queen. It was hard to believe at first, but gradually we adiusted to the hustle and bustle which comprises the life of a Sen- ior. Our first deed as Sen- iors was to sponsor a dance welcoming the new Fresh- men. It was a success and was enjoyed by all. Our Senior class was quickly es- tablished with President, Art De Mania, Vice Presi- dent, Ray Colucciellog Sec- retary, Kathy Grupe, Treas- urer, Sandra Boyce, and Sergeant-at-Arms, Spencer Birt. Our Draperian Board had to be organized. Kent Hawks was elected Editor- in-Chief by a unanimous de- cision. The other Draperian staffs were organized and this important business set its wheels in motion. The Senior Play soon followed. Miss Caparis and Miss Ver- ven were the directors of the comedy, You C a n 't Take lt With You. The stars were Beverly C u b it and Kent Hawks. The play was a decided hit. The next big social event will be our Senior Ball. With capable Seniors at the helm, this promises to be the so- cial highlight of the year. Soon after this we will face our final exams and then -Graduation! W i t h four years of hard work behind us, we can iustly feel the pride of achievement as we receive our diplomas. Before we leave we must give sincerest appreciation and thanks to our deans, Mrs. Weir, Miss Keith, Miss Chouinard, and Mrs. Har- rington, who did so much to help us through our Sen- ior year. YOU CAN'T TAKE I-T WITH YOU has established itself among the important plays of our time. This delightful comedy by Hart and Kaufman was the play chosen to be presented by the Class of '55, Under the direction of Miss Ann Caparis and her associate, Miss Verven, the performance was ranked as one of the best in Draper's history. The laugh-packed antics of Mr. De Pinna, Grandpa and Mr. Kolenkhov are certainly proof of the sensational production. The gridiron season of 1954 brought an improvement in Draper's record. Through the inspired coaching of our newly acquired head coach, Dick McGuire, we were able to tie Saratoga I3-13 and take our only win from our arch rival, Scotia, by 25-13. Assistant Coach Herb Gaige coached the freshmen and sopho- mores who will be on our future teams. We hope to see Draper soon become one of the leading teams in the league. Benington, scored a success for Draper. ln addition to the local pa- rades in which we took part, the band was invited to play for the opening of the New York State Thru- way. The biggest event of the year was our invitation All aboard for to march in Macy's annual New York City p a r a d e on Thanksgiving Day in New York City. This organization also participat- ed in our annual spring and fall concerts, state contests, and the massed band con- cert made up of all the school bands in this area. The orchestra, also direct- ed by Mr. Benington, had a fine year. They played in the fall and s p r i n g con- certs and did very well at the contest. They also did their usual fine iob ot play- ing between the acts of the school plays. The chorus sang in our Mrs.Margare1Gray annual concerts and had a Twirlers lead band big part in the success ot down Broadway the massed chorus concert. Arthur Benington First row: T. Greenberg, P. Season tickets, safe- ty and clefan-up campaigns, pep rallies and scheduled assemblies are results of the council's work. In April, we sent delegates to the Central New York State Confer- ence ot Student Councils which will eventually develop into a state conference for the benefit of high school student govern- ments throughout the state. That's very true, of course . . . perhaps more so today than ever before. But it is equally true, and too often left unsaid, that America needs men and women who know the ideals and goals our forefathers strived for . . . men and Women who appreciate the things that have made America strong down through the years. This appreciation must go a little deeper than just knowing what democracy is and how it works. It must include a belief in our free enterprise system . . . one of democracy's most priceless heritages. America needs people who understand why this system of comdpetitive enterprise must be preserved and strengthened, so that our country's stan ards of living may continue to lead the World. There are, unfortunately, some people in our own country . . . perhaps even in our own community . . . who would like to see the free enterprise system weakened or destroyed. To safeguard this vital heritage, you must understand it. That means learning, observing and believing long after school days have passed. American industry will certainly continue to need engineers, chemists, economists, and other specialists. But industry feels it equally important that these specialists and all its other people be first and foremost the kind of clear-thinking, under- standing men and women who are good Americans.
