THE AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL The Yearbook always reminds us that another class will soon be graduated. l congratulate the class and urge all of us to look back and see if we have left visible marks of accomplishment. It is doubtless true that the greatest values are invisible to the casual observer and that they are ethical rather than material. Just what each individual pupil has acquired will doubtless be unknown for years to come. I often think when a diploma is given that the person receiving it becomes the symbol of value varying in degrees of worth in propor- tion to the various acquired traits of character, intelligence, attitude, and objectives. The American High School is not something fixed, static, unchanging, it is growth, reflecting the changing social, domestic and economic arrangements of our National Life. More accurately and completely than any other institution, it mirrors the national ideals and aspirations. The traveler in Europe, on entering a town, sees great buildings, in America he sees a schoolhouse. lt is ubiquitous and dominant. lt gathers unto itself an even larger share of the life of youth. Now it is reaching out for the adult, also offering him a share of its wealth, therefore, our problems are many and diversified and we must always endeavor to make each year a progressive accomplishment toward higher standards gong I3 .,. Opportunity knocks many times, offering employment of all kinds. Although entrance to higher institu- tions of learning requires high grades and active participation in school affairs, many pupils can meet the necessary standards. There is a place for each graduate. Your problem is to make the correct choice of future activity. Your abilities, skills and preferences, all combined, should govern your choice. Choose wisely, and you have the basis for a full and happy life. I congratulate you on your approaching graduation and wish you success in whatever you do in the future. Howard E.
