' U .xv-rc' Dedication Draper High, you've been the fulfillment of four years of a richer life to each one of us, life that can never be relived, only recalled. And when we do so often look back, we won't think of a huge building with clinging vines or rooms with four walls, we'll remember the thrilling basketball games, our dances, those dreaded report cards, the droning last bells, tardy slips, detention, and the race over to Powles's for a booth. To you, dear Alma Mater, we, the Seniors of the 1948 class, dedicate our book. Geraldine Campriello Editor-in-chief Geraldine Campriello. Assistant Editors Cynthia Weisheit, Keith Hitchins. Business Manager Robert Davis. Literary Editors Reta Lee White, Elaine Blessing, Gary Bonk, Mary Anderson, Edward Matuck. Art Editors Vida Worthington, Doris Jones, Richard Pangburn, Nancy Butler. L53 THE AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL The Yearbook always reminds us that another class will soon be graduated. l congratulate the class and urge all of us to look back and see if we have left visible marks of accomplishment. It is doubtless true that the greatest values are invisible to the casual observer and that they are ethical rather than material. Just what each individual pupil has acquired will doubtless be unknown for years to come. I often think when a diploma is given that the person receiving it becomes the symbol of value varying in degrees of worth in propor- tion to the various acquired traits of character, intelligence, attitude, and objectives. The American High School is not something fixed, static, unchanging, it is growth, reflecting the changing social, domestic and economic arrangements of our National Life. More accurately and completely than any other institution, it mirrors the national ideals and aspirations. The traveler in Europe, on entering a town, sees great buildings, in America he sees a schoolhouse. lt is ubiquitous and dominant. lt gathers unto itself an even larger share of the life of youth. Now it is reaching out for the adult, also offering him a share of its wealth, therefore, our problems are many and diversified and we must always endeavor to make each year a progressive accomplishment toward higher standards gong I3 .,. EARL B. ZIMMER SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS the people. Conditions under which the high school pupil graduates today are favorable for those who are ambitious. Opportunity knocks many times, offering employment of all kinds. Although entrance to higher institu- tions of learning requires high grades and active participation in school affairs, many pupils can meet the necessary standards. There is a place for each graduate. Your problem is to make the correct choice of future activity. Your abilities, skills and preferences, all combined, should govern your choice. Choose wisely, and you have the basis for a full and happy life. I congratulate you on your approaching graduation and wish you success in whatever you do in the future. Howard E. Ours was the largest Freshman class in Draper his- tory - 198 strong. Our first year was taken up with making new friends and showing our teachers how studious we couldfn'tJ be. The highlight of the year was the Freshman play, Angel Child. After what seemed like the shortest summer vaca- tion on record, we returned to Draper as worldly Sophomores. This year we organized with Bob Davis as President. In the Spring the Sophomore entry, Leave It To Joe. won the Junior Play Contest. Gary Bonk, a member of our class, won the best actor award. The first action taken as Juniors was to elect class officers. Bob Davis was again chosen President, with Joe Bianchi as Vice-President. Martha Bridge was Secretary and Doris Jones, Treasurer. ln the early Spring our class sponsored the annual Junior Play Contest, our presentation being Teacher's Pet. In May all our young ladies and gentlemen turned out for the big event of the season, the Junior Prom. June was soon upon us and brought with it, regents. We worried through them successfully and earned the right to be Seniors. In October we chose Frank Corradi to lead us through the year. Keith Hitchins was elected Vice- President, with Doris Jones, Secretary, and Anne Mellerud, Treasurer. Preparations for the Senior Play, A Date With Judy, were begun in order to make it the best ever produced at Draper. The Draperian Board, with Gerry Campriello as editor, got down to work Cit's underlined, Mrs. Ruffl to present this year's different Draperian. The Senior Ball, in June, will wind up our high school activities. With this and graduation, the curtain will ring down on four wonderful years of high school whose memory will linger in our hearts forever. Eagan! 2466 MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1958 VOLUME XXXX MAKE WAY FOR PROGRESS Young Mary Anderson, a genius in her field, has at last given us a simple and understandable ex- planation of Einstein's Theory of Relativity. Miss Anderson is still working on the new super atomic power recently discovered by her and her colleagues. Her colleagues are: Gary Bonk, Charles Billings, Helen Engvold, Beverly Hanson, Ann Melle- rud, John Seiler, and Harry Scott. R. R. MISHAP PREVENTED Today, one of the most disastrous wrecks of all times was prevented on the N. Y. Central R. R. tracks near South Schenectady. Our two heroes were Jim Male and Chuck O'Brien. The fact is that they re- moved themselves from the tracks in order to allow a passing freight to go by. PARLEY AT THE FARM The Big Four, including Gerry Campriello, June Doig, Reggie Kowalczyk, and Cynthia Weisheit, is holding a conference at The Farm. The main topic of discussion is the plan of attack for the oncoming Sadie Hawkin's Day. FRENCH ENTHUSIASTS Elaine Blessing, Keith Hitchins, Dorothy Kelly, Joan Mattice, Jean Stewart, and Reta Lee White, under the guidance of Bob Davis, have left for Washington, D. C. They have acquired positions as French inter- preters there and they will be ioining Adele Polach, who has already been on the same type of job for six months. This French linguist was first inspired by French as a mere child when she exhibited her talents in a Senior play - A Date With Judy. WAIT TILL YOU SEE IT Vida Worthington, after completing that last masterpiece, has begun to paint the portrait of Ann Harris. She refused to have anyone but Ann model for this portrait because she wishes to express sweetness, demureness, and beauty all at once. Strange as it may seem, Ann is also quite the artist. Already two of her paintings have been ac- cepted in the National Museum of Art. SOCIAL EVENTS Marilyn Bryant, who has been a Power's Model for five years, went to Hollywood yesterday to undergo a screen test. We know that this voluptuous blonde has all the chances in the world of paving a road to success. av Mr. and Mrs. Jack Deschenes Cformerly Barbara Wintlei, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Leva KMarion Filutai, Mr. and Mrs. John Moller lNorma Seegeri, and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Van Etten CBertha Thomasi, held their weekly game of bridge last night. Refreshments were served and they had an enioyable time discussing recent gossip and current problems. Miss Arlene Norris, president of the National Beau- ticians' Union, visited here last week to speak to our local chapter on The Correct Adiustment of False Eyelashes. At present, Miss Norris is a co-worker with Perc Westmore at M.G.M. Studios. LOST AND FOUND Lost: A brunette from Frank Corradi's harem. Re- ward - a gorgeous blonde la leftover but still beau- tifulli. Found: Marion CKellerJ Elastic and Her Rubber Band. Marion, her sax, and the remainder of the band iust snapped from nowhere. But they are stretching world wide fame through the nation. Three of the area players with her are Mariorie Plusch, Joe Di Cerbo, and Don Scrafford. SPORTS Manager Herbie Gaige of the N. Y. Yankees and Manager Louis Kichton of the Brooklyn Dodgers, have placed a bet of one thousand dollars on their teams. Herbie is confident of his win in the series, while Louis is positive of his. The teams are evenly balanced due to the excellent coaching of these men. Herbie's outstanding players are: Ed Kelly, Dick Briscoe, Leland Scott, Willie Do-it, Joe Smirk and Isaak Schloop. Louis' outstanding players are: Carl Lamp, Don Simone, Red Kennedy, Chris Pierone, Bob Marx, Al Scrazmus, and Freddy Klutch. ' This year it was quite impossible for the iudges of the Women's Professional Basketball League to select one eminent and most valuable player. Instead, two have been chosen. These celebrated women are Evelyn Rudeshiem and Shirley Van Buren. WANTED A position as dentist's assistant. Experienced, young, and pretty. Please call Miss Lois Getman. Our club is now composed of approximately thirty-five girls, some who have just joined the club in their Senior Year. The Sky-Hi has sponsored bazaar booths, dances, and salad sales throughout the four years. For our own enioyment, we have had parties and suppers. This year we are able to have five ot our girls on the Canteen Council with tive Hi-Y members. Could we have done these things without our able advisors, Miss Veeder and Mrs. Picozzi? Of course not! The purpose ofthe Hi-Y is to create, main- tain, and extend throughout the school and community high standards of Christian char- acter. Among its numerous activities, the Hi-Y publishes a handbook distributed to the freshmen in order to acquaint them with their school. This booklet is edited and tinanced solely by this club. Two main events of the year are the Hi-Y play and the trip. The play is staged with boys taking all parts, including female char- acterizations. Enough money is usually made by this method to finance the trip to a Dude Rranch. The play is given early in the spring and the trip is taken on a week-end Clost, hicll in late spring. Cheerleaders Captain of Varsity Squad Margaret Livingstone Captain of Junior Varsity Squad Mildred Giaquinto No game would be complete without an able set of cheer- leaders. They not only get the audience more enthused in the game, but they keep up the team's morale and give them the will to fight. This year's squad has practiced vigorously and really know how to do their stuff. Led by Mr. Arnds, our spec- tacular cheerleaders cheer our teams on to victory. 62 P TRONS X ff ix mf Q2 L641 THE ROTTERDAM TOWN BOARD EXTENDS ITS HEARTIEST CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF '48 I William L.
