Though they are far away from us, they still remain with us, in all our thoughts. ln january of this year, we lost many of our own Senior boys to the Army and Navy. To these, and to all the other boys and girls who once roamed Draper's halls, and are now in the armed forces, with the hope that they will soon be marching home -- we solemnly dedicate this book. ,- X Q tw .., RACIAL TOLERANCE ln a country at war, one sometimes becomes conscious of a common striving among men and women in industry toward an ultimate goal. ln some cases this striving even includes a tolerance towards one's fellow worker. He is respected because of his keenness of mind or his skill, not excluded because of his particular race or creed. lf anything advantageous comes out of war, it is racial tolerance, for this feeling is not only intelligent, but it is also an important part of Christianity, for earthly standards, such as position, wealth, race meant nothing to jesus. Through extensive reading in high school for various subjects, we became acquainted with great men of different races, for example, George Washington Carver, a Negro, and Chinese Madame Chiang Kai-shek. Through our teacher, who realized equality for all is important in a democ- racy, we became, on the most part, open-minded, and consequently, tolerant. When plans for the post-war world are made, old prejudices must be forgotten, for there will be no time for such things while there are the large problems of adjustment to normal conditions to be solved. This plan- ning, in order to be effective, must include teaching tolerance to the young, for the students then will be the lawmakers and citizens later. Their ideas will become custom and law. The superiority of any race over the rest is proved false by the present chaotic condition of the world. The Germans, driven by their fiendish leaders to believe they were super-human, strove to conquer the world. Their failure should be everyone's lesson. Every race has its peculiar char- acteristics, but no one group could ever overpower all the others. After the present struggle is over, all the races of the world must cooperate in order to accomplish the things that may be done in the field of science and medicine. lt is my sincere wish that in that time when distance and hours are shortened so as to make the world seem small indeed and because of inventions our lives are made more useful and more pleasant. people may look over the world and say in their hearts, We are truly all sisters and brothers. RUTH HALSTEAD. Assistant Editor-in-Chief. EARL B. ZIMMER Superintendent of Schools The high school pupils of i945 are very uncertain about the future. The war is still with us and must be brought to a successful conclusion. Reconstruction of a war torn world must follow as surely as day follows the night. The problems will be many and very complicated because of the peculiar abstract human character traits we all possessg therefore, the preparation in education must be increased and improved. Opportunities for the returning service women and men must be varied and sympathetic to fulfill the requirements of individual differences. The world now filled with hate must become a world filled with a feeling of good-will toward all people. This is a very large order to fill, but no other adjustment will justify the sacrifices of service people or assure that civilization will reach higher goals. Peace is a product of kindliness and war a product of hate and evil. Therefore, the average persons must want and deserve peace by their acts and feelings if we are to avoid another world catastrophe. EARL B. ZIMMER, Superintendent. HOWARD E. BAKER Our Principal High school graduates in i945 will have achieved their goal despite many distractions. The needs of the war and indus- try have caused many of your classmates to leave school before graduation. You have been urged to work part time and you have responded. The war has taken your attention from some of the apparently less important phases of your life to the detri- ment of your studies. l congratulate you who finish high school. Yours is a real achievement. The war and conditions resulting from it have caused a considerable drop in nation wide high school enrollment. This means that fewer replacements are available for the professions and skilled trades. Already many professions are feeling the lack of educated and trained personnel. In a very few years this condition will be even more acute. Each high school gradu- ate should take advantage of every opportunity to advance his or her education. The industrial, social, and economic needs of our democracy must be met by today's pupils, properly educated and trained. HOWARD E. BAKER, Principal. O PX STURGESS . GEORGE . These Freshmen of l94l are now, by dint of hard work and earnest study l?l the Senior Class of l945. For the first year, we were all model students, doing our homework every night, and otherwise conducting ourselves like little ladies and gentle- men. By the time we became sophomores, we had grown up a little, and. as a result, acted twice as childish. In our sophomore year, we were en- titled to join many of the clubs and activities which, in our first year, had been limited to band and orchestra. Some of the boys made the junior varsity, so we went to all the games to yell our lungs out for the glory of the team. We also won the junior play contest in our second year, as well as when we were Freshmen, which made us all very sure that our class was full of budding Cornells and Barrymores. ln the fall of l943, we became organized as the junior class, electing Ray Skoda to lead us through the year. jimmy Veith was Vice-President, and Florence Reisinger, Secretary. We struggled along, meeting many obstacles, but eventually surmounting them. Of course, the crowning event of that year, was our junior Prom, which was held on May 26, l944. We never knew we had so many glamour gals and guys in our class until then. Thus, came june-we took our exams and passed them, and started our vacation, serene in the knowledge that we would return in September as Seniors. The first thing we did in September, of course, was to elect our officers. johnny jurczynski was elected President, Gino Lalxflarca, Vice-President, and Thelma Pangburn, Secretary. Our first important event was the Senior Fall Dance, where to the music of Lou Ricci's orchestra, we all had a grand time. Then came the Senior Play, entitled june Mad, and it was one of the very best senior plays ever put on by Draper. We were all very proud of the job our kids did that night. ln january, the Senior Class was sadly decreased in number, because so many of our boys went off to the service. We're proud of them but we certainly miss them. We had our Mid-term Dance in honor of these boys, on january 25, with music provided by Phil Lawrence and his orchestra. Now' we find ourselves Senior A's with the task of publishing a yearbook facing us. Later on, there will be the Senior trip, and the Senior Ball, and finally, the goal towards which we have been striving for twelve long years-graduation. We, the Senior Class of l945, shall go out from Draper, into many different fields of endeavor. We shall lead different lives, perhaps may never see some of our classmates again, but no matter what we do, or what we may become, we shall remember the four years spent in Draper with pride and gratitude. Thus, we bid farewell to our Alma Mater. VIRTUE MALE. SNOWDRIFTS Tonight and all afternoon I watched the snowflakes come down, at first slowly and one by one, finally descending on great gusts of wind in feathery clouds. At first there was one flake after another dying in the half- heated earth, finally the dull brown gave way to a powdery white. The slender blades of pale green grass grew silvery with tiny balls of fluff on their tips. lt wasn't long, though, before all this was covered under layers and layers of snow. The afternoon had been still, now, under a cold, chill moon, a breeze stirred and soon a wind whistled its lonely tune through the black lace branches of the trees above. The blanket of white became a white, moving mass, shaping itself into mountains and valleys, monsters and angels. The snowdrift had appeared. It didn't seem hard for anyone to love these dancing bits of lace that formed jolly, little men with round stomachs and eyes that looked like chunks of black coal because that's what they were. I thought of all the people who praised this covering of purity that came from heaven to wash away the dirty tracks man left behind him. It made a town torn to shreds in Russia by the German armies seem peaceful and quiet and forgiven. It helped those brave Russian people, too. They prayed to God to make those blessed snows come a little quicker this year and how they cheered and fell on their knees when their petition was granted! Sometimes the fate of nations hinges on an object no larger than a pinhead of cold whiteness that melts on your hand the instant it strikes it. Then l thought about Valley Forge and how some men can curse so beautiful a thing as snow. To them, this thing was hideous and driving and cruel. It tore at their rags until it was difficult to say which was quiver- ing the most--the man or his clothing, it cut slices out of their shoes and, for those who had no shoes, their bare flesh, it reddened their skin and made their eyes sting and smart until the tears came. Every step they took, they left their bloody trail behind for all mankind to remember and feel that the liberty they conceived came from them, that they alone had been able to bring the freedom from all men's hearts into a land big enough to hold it all. I'm glad I have never been in a situation where I would hate these white fairies. Yet, how solemn and honored they must have been when this march of freedom trod on them. There was no dancing or bounc- ing for those particles of heaven that year. Somehow, though, the drifts that are forming tonight seem uncon- cerned with the silent thankfulness of the Russians or the past curses of the sons of liberty. They are calm and peaceful with an eternity of drifts behind them and the dependability to those to come. To me, they symbolize the purity of the birth of Christ. The freezing crystals clung to the black casings of our window pane, completely covering and cleaning them, just as Christianity had covered the cruelties of mankind with its golden rule. There was sunlight and warmthg there were no guns roaring and there were no cries of pain. At first I thought I had died and gone to the paradise I had never hoped to attain. But there were no angels, and the only person I could see blowing a horn was not Gabriel but jim Veithg then it was that I knew that I wasn't in heaven, but I was seeing my dream of tomorrow. Suddenly there was such a blare of drums and such a blast from the bugles and such a roar from the masses that I saw crowded around my little man with the horn that I thought for a moment that I would awaken. But thanks to the high heavens for the hush and awe that followed when a King and Queen floated regally from a beautiful castle in the clouds. That face beneath the first crown was that of the Irishman's Party, john jurczynski. Under the second crown was none other than Draper's songbird, Marge Grupe. It seemed that the King was going to attend the royal tournament held in honor of his having been proclaimed kind of the empire. The King and his Queen majestically moved to their seats in waiting for them and the feats of skill began at once. At the first blare of bugles out walked Alma Glover with all the white horses that she had trained when she should have been studying The Theories of American History under jeanette Sittner and Elizabeth Cross. But the King seemed very pleased with the results and the great white animals pranced about and the knights of the Tournament jumped upon their backs. These virile young men with muscles so strong that they bulged out of their very armors were none other than Little Frank lLeGerel, Twinkle-Toes George lCarIsonl, Bernie lSteuartl, Bud lWhitel, Casanova john lSmithl, and Huckleberry lHibberdl. It was a game of utmost skill that they played, for they had to play that age old game of basketball on horseback. Please don't ask me how they did it for after all this is only a dream. The King found himself very much amused for a time, but soon his three Hossy cronies finally tempted him to a game of cards and before long there was a crowd around the King's box to see which would win the game. Poor King john and his partner, Robert Conrad, lost to the diverse and skillful methods of trickery and cheating of Charles Lead- erach and Burton Weisheit. Gently the Queen took the King's arm and pushing him playfully in front of her reminded him of the Court that was to be held at four o'cIock. The Courthouse was a beautiful-edifice planned and built by those master engineers, Robert Reisinger, George Lamb, Bill Zimmerman, Doris james, Bob Wilson, and Leonard Winston. judge Schaefer began the pro- ceedings by hitting his thumb with the gavel instead of the desk and then called those two lawyers who hadn't ceased discussing the ten-year-old case of the Dewey-Roosevelt Campaign, Ray Fletcher and Charles -Loeber, to the stand. Ray was defending our Irish miss, Betty O'MaIIey, and Chuck contended that she talked too much. The fact of the whole matter was that poor Chuck could not concentrate on what he was going to answer to Mr. FIetcher's questions as to just what Mr. Dewey could have done that Mr. Roosevelt had not already seen to at least a hundred times and ot course Ray was clever enough to bring this point to light, and then Charles had to say that if that were the case, then Ray was biased in his opinion because naturally Miss O'Malley was a spy of his and was just trying to confuse him. The judge could stand no more and settled it with his ever-efficient ways of suggesting that the court be entertained by some dance routines of Ruth Delehunt's little band of toe-dancers. Eleanor DiDonato, Alice Poteralski, Ann Reyda, Thelma Morrison, and Rita Potpinka were dancing in sets of filmy, flouncing pastel cloud sets designed by Marilyn Struys and Frances Paquin. The Queen's eyes twinkled as she watched the graceful movements of the dancers, but what made King john laugh were the foolish antics on roller skates of Cal Burtner, and the smile of appreciation that came to his lips when Shirley Rolfe, Pauline Mahar, and Elaine Smith waltzed on their wheels to glory was worth their efforts. By this time judge Schaefer was in a very good mood and with a wave of his hand he dismissed the case against Miss O'lvlaIley. But when he asked the head of the Law secretaries, Rose Albanese, if she had taken all the notes on the court proceedings, she was about to say yes but then thought again and asked if the judge would be good enough to spell a very hard word for her. She wondered if he would spell TOMORROW dismiss with an e or an The judge asked all the other little secre- taries, Mary Bloodgood, Rita Empie, Eness Gallucci, Betty Merenburg, Eunice Osta, Helen Klimowitz, Eileen Livingston, Marion Winn, Arlene Shubert, Verna Reynolds, Eva jane Gregg, Marilyn Armstrong, Midge Scheels, Loretta Abbott, jane Nitchke, Dot Reisinger, Virginia Martinelli, Louise Spina, Dot Verra, Eleanor Van Allen and Beryl Vernon. But all the little secretaries nodded their long bobs and feather cuts and wrinkled their powdered brows to signify that they also did not know how to spell dismiss At once, the judge called in the Kingdom's Head of the Board of Education, Ruth Halstead, but she could not give the, head secretary the answer immediately, She called the Chief Bookkeeper, Mabel Krick, to look up the correct answer in Male's Dictionary. Suddenly court proceedings were interrupted by a terrible scuffle and flying of feathers. Don Brehm and his neighbor, Helen Furbeck, were bring- ing the Queen another gift. This time it was one of their pet geese that they had raised for the county fair and that had won the blue ribbon. The chief accountant, joan Case, listed this prize goose on the page in the Queen's budget book marked assets Two dark heads instantaneously put themselves above the crowd, they were the Chief Health lnspector, Mary Bullis, and the Chief Game Warden, Patsy Rocchio. In performing their duties they felt it only right that they should know just where the Queen was going to keep her new pet, but when Farmer Brehm brought forth a beautiful Canadian woven basket brought back to our Kingdom by Lottie Gauvreau, the question was settled. With that the day at court ended, the King and Queen went back to their castle newly decorated by THE H. CLARK AND R. MIDDLETON CO. The King and Queen upon returning to their castle immediately set down to putting their appointments for tomorrow in their little black books. The King and Queen were both very forgetful people and the Queen asked the King to remind her that she was to go to the wonderous beautician, Emily Adamec, and the King asked the Queen not to let him forget his appointment with Dentist M. j. Alsdorf. The Queen then went to to her kitchen to tell the cooks to prepare a very special meal tonight for they were to have very special guests in the form of the Humanitarians, Aldona Vaitulis and Anna Aldershoff, that Builder of Giant Airplanes, Bob Francis, and the blond printer, john Peek. The chief cooks were favorites of the King. Since Chick Reisinger and Esther Hart had married they were the best cooks in the whole Kingdom. No wonder that the Navy Admirals from the U.S.S. Draper, Fred Edwards, Stanley Samatulski, Ray Skoda, Morris Safford, George Wintle, Louis Girard, and their mascots, june Quay and jean Metzler, were so over stuffed with fried chicken that they just sat calmly through a very long report on our foreign relations from the King's right-hand helper, his Secretary of Statc, Sylvia Gade. But what did stop the report were the screams of the ladies in the court, for stretchers were being brought in with the wounded of the last war that King john's Kingdom was ever to see. They were Pilot Charles Miller, Generals Rodrigo Rodrigo, Harold Brown, Everard Cupo, Art Vonk and Bob DiGirolamo. Each had been a victim of a girl with very long fingernails and had tiny scratches on his face. Pat Cummings, Betty Dawson, Dot Dutcher, Shirley Newell, Elsie Braun, and Marie Leininger of the Nurse Corps immediately rushed to the wounded men and before long they were as good as new. To amuse these wounded men, the King called in Elsa Tillema to play on her flute, Bob and Allan Rockefeller to sing their delightful cowboy songs, and Helen Eaton to sing and to take their minds off their pain with her very beautiful eyes. Then came his clown Rudy Gabrielle, who looked very funny in his bright colored suit, and the Queen's magical jack in the Box which popped up every five minutes and looked like the curly top of Gino LaMarca. The next step of entertainment for the boys was a play given by Berenice Dereski, Frances Fidler, Mabel Guthrie, Ann Robert, Harold Kapelle, Dick Fairchild, and Ray McDonough. The whole evening was very pleasant just as the whole dream had been and it ended with the very intricate dancing lessons of Louis Lupi. And then, in this dream of all dreams, I saw myself, Thelma Pangburn, writing this all down in the King's diary. As I closed it with a terrific noise, l awoke with a start. 410 042 THE KID Somewhere, far way from here A white cross gleams in the sun. lt stands for a boy who gave his life, lt stands for a job well done. He was just a kid from the U.S.A., just a kid with a heart full of dreams. He dreamed of baseball, his girl at the dance He woke up to bullets and screams. The guys in his outfit called him The Kid, But in their hearts they were proud, For it's kids like him who win the war, Those kids with their heads in the clouds. The day before the really big push A letter came from his mother. He'd read, with a lump in his throat, about her About Dad, and his crazy kid brother. He'd thought, that day, how swell it would be When he went back home to them, How swell it would be to see them all To be with the folks again. The next day, they left for the front line The Kid, with a prayer in his heart, Was right up there with the other C. l.'s Yearning to do his part. It was nearing dusk when the Nazis began Their violent counter-attack. The Kid and his buddies began to doubt Their chances of getting back. When The Kid fell, it was hard for the rest To keep on with the fight. The Kid closed his eyes, said good-bye to the world just as dusk gave way to night. Somewhere, far away from here, A white cross gleams in the sun. It stands for a boy who gave his life, lt stands for a job well done. Marezedoats O. we 044 The Holy Rite of Sunset Sunset on Lake Algonquin is as beautiful and as sacred as a midnight mass on Christmas Eve. The sun seems to act as the altar, for when its comforting rays rest on the lake, the waves bow in sincere reverence. Each great tree on the lakeside is a priest, each is garbed in a multi-colored robe. From-their branches to the lesser beings below drops of holy water fall, and with each drop is a blessing. A choir, too, is supplied, a choir singing hymns more beautiful than those any mortal might ever compose. Wee frogs and large frogs, birds, squirrels, deer, and every other animal for miles around joins in, for they are all Cod's children. They are all blessed by the trees and comforted by the immortal rays of the sun. Soon the golden rays of the sun are hued deep purple, and the great fiery ball kissed the Adirondack Mountains good-bye as it slips on to hold mass in parts of the world which are not calm and peaceful,-but are desolate and in ruins. A rustling of the leaves is heard as creatures large and small leave the church to prepare for rest. There is contentment in their hearts and brotherly love in their very veins, for they know that on the morrow the altar will be returned, and that the service will be held at sunset. All is at peace. I think of good, times spent at Band and Orchestra. This reminiscence does not go on for long because I am constantly reminded of my duties as a member of the Navy. Since the first attempts of japan to seize our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, the U. S. Navy has played a major part in counteracting the aggression of their so-called imperial fleet. As a member of this great organization of men, I wish to express my feelings concerning my comrades. I have noticed that when a group of civilians speak of the Navy, their thoughts turn to ships, destruction, and death. These, to me, seem the minor part of the Navy. The important part is the Naval personnel itself. My comrades of the Navy are typical Americans, whose confident attitude and friendly manner make each recruit feel like a part of their group. I live in a barracks with a group of men, who, a few weeks ago, were strangers and now are close friends. To sit here with these men, knowing that some will go directly out to sea and perhaps never return, gives a fellow a strange feeling. Maybe he will be the unlucky one, yet, each man is sure that he will be the one to return and dismisses it without further thought. Each day mail is distributed. I have seen men actually glow when a letter is handed to them. Their eyes light up and their whole day seems much brighter. On the other hand, I have seen anxious faces turn away in despair because their names were not called. It is a sorrowful sight to see a sailor walk away from Mail Call empty-handed. The Navy is a great group of men and is a grand organization to belong to. I am proud and very happy that I am a member of it. However, it is my belief that each and every man will welcome the day when victory has been achieved, and he can leave his military life and return to his civilian activities. We all hope that soon this war will be over, and the boys of all the services will be able to return home. RAY SKODA. ...W W... ,, :cz ...f-mf NN ,, 's B IOR SEN -5 N0 O 3 f .1 J! Returning on the varsity squad this year were john jurczynski, Kurt Thron, George Carlson, Cal Burtner and john Smith. Others who made varsity were joe Simone, Don Simone, Huck Hibberd, Frank LeGere, and Bob Starr. The squad was unpredictable most of the year and turned in many unexpected wins. We won nine games and lost five up until March 6. We entered in the Western B League along with Saratoga, Phillip Schyler, Scotia, Mechanicville, and johnstown. On March 6 we won the league title and will play at Convention Hall at Saratoga in the sectionals DRAPER AWARDS IN SPORTS A visit to our trophy case proved that we did fairly well throughout the years in the participation of sports at Draper High School. In l928, we won the lnterscholastic basketball cup in the tri-county league. ln l932, i933 our soccer team acquired the championship title in the ENYPHAL. We were awarded two cups for this season. We were also champions in the Watervliet leagues, but because of our failure to play our home games there, we missed out on a four foot trophy which would have been a welcome addition to our collection. ln 1939, Scotia and Draper each won a trophy for the tri-county inter- scholastic basketball league. Draper came out on top in the contest at Union College and was awarded a trophy signifying sole championship. VARSITY D Through the efforts of Coach Fink and a number of school athletes, we have finally reorganized an Athlete Club which has been inactive for quite a while. It was weak and slow in getting started, but we expect it will have a good foundation soon. The charter members are john Smith, joe Simone, Rudy Gabrielle, Dick Nehls, Kurt Thron, john jurczynski, Cal Burtner, Huck Hibberd, Skip DiGirolamo, George Carlson, Bud White, Bernie Stewart, and Frank LeGere. Frank LeGere is president, john Smith is the vice-president, john jurczynski is the secretary-treasurer with Mr. Fink as sponsor. 750 075 First row: Frank Corradi, Nelson La Roe, Gerald Hewett, james Mathieson, Eddie Le-Gere, lack Colquhoun, Nicholas LaMarca, George Guthrie, Herbert Gaige. OUR BASEBALL TEAM This year, Draper will find a fairly green and inexperienced squad on the ball field! We are going to face some strong foes such as Scotia, Mechan- icville, Saratoga, Burnt Hills, and Ballston Spa. We will also find ourselves in debuts against Mont Pleasant and Nott Terrace High Schools, who are returning to baseball. They will have strong teams. Among the few retainers on this year's squad will be Dick Nehls, john Smith, Huck Hibberd, Bernie Steuart, Bud White, Frank LeC-ere, and joe Simone.
