The first thought in our minds today is how we can best serve our coun try We in the United States are determined that our democracy shall not degenerate into a totalitarian form We believe that our government can exist and defend itself without its citizens losing freedom of thought or action In order to be effective in our efforts we must work together we must have unity We intend that this shall occur through voluntary and not en forced action Unity alone is not enough to make our efforts successful It is work through education The higher institutions of learning realizing the need for speed in production have condensed their courses by eliminating vacations Each graduate should continue his or her education as far as pos sible not only for individual benefit but also for the increased effectiveness that will result from further training l congratulate the Class of I9-42 I hope that success in meeting the requirements of high school graduation will lead all of you to further success in solving the many problems of life which await you HOWARD E BAKER the duty as well as the privilege of our citizens to increase their capacity for Page Nine
