When The Class oT '40, Draper High School, walk solwly and undoubTedly ThoughTTully across The sTage oT our audiTorium, aT The end oT This semesTer, whaT will Those ThoughTs be? ThoughTs of graduaTion, ThoughTs of The pasT or ThoughTs oT The TuTure. Finally our dreams of The Draperian , our Ball and Trip have become acTualiTies. ' To some, CommencemenT will close The lasT chapTer in The secTions oT Their auTo- biographies perTaining To EducaTiong To oThers merely The closing oT a chapTer on High School, The inTermediaTe beTween Their TirsT source oT knowledge and a higher school oT ThoughT and learning, namely college or The universiTy. Leadership is The abiliTy To accepT responsibiliTy, and by accepTing ThaT responsibiliTy perform a prescribed Task noT only eTTicienTly and economically, buT sincerely as well. Anyone can do, merely do, a Task buT Tew can do ThaT Task whole- hearTedly. ln any high school or college class or socieTy one may Tind examples of This abiliTy To accepT responsibiliTy. One may also observe ThaT The leaders in These organizaTions ThaT are liked by everyone are The individuals ThaT do Their iob noT wiTh a downcasT look, buT raTher wiTh ThaT air of willingness To help wiTh anyThing TurTher ThaT They mighT do. Scholarship is ThaT qualiTy ever looked Tor by employers in hopeTul employees- To-be. One may see The resulTs oT scholarship in mosT of The currenT leaders oT Today, sTudenTs oT yesTerday, who had marks above The average oT Their classmaTes and who have used ThaT basic Training To TurTher Their climb on ThaT oTT spoken oT ladder of success . One may argue ThaT The leaders oT The pasT, Franklin, Monroe, and Lincoln, were noT The producTs of Tormal Training: They could noT be because oi The lack of ample TaciliTies. Remember each oT These men had an able mind and a will To learn, and when one puTs These Two sub-qua'liTies TogeTher. you have The basic elemenTs oT which Scholarship is composed. Friendship -One can recognize This qualiTy as The one ThaT has held our Class and previous graduaTing classes, in This school and neighboring high schools, TogeTher. Friendship can be exempliliied as The cooperaTion beTween one anoTher in school work, exTra-curricular and inTerscholasTic acTiviTies. Friendship can be seT aparT inTo Two classes, casual and inTimaTe. One is bound To have more casual Triends or Those of merely speaking acquainTance. When one reaches The sTage of inTimacy wiTh a person, There is an ouTleT Tor one's Troubles and woes, a place, using The vernacular, To geT Things oTT one's chesT. OuiTe oTTen iT is advisable To become well acquainTed wiTh some person oT your own choosing and liking so ThaT you may exchange ideas on various Topics such as proper speech, dress, one's personal appearance, and advice perTaining To one's own personaliTy. SporTsmanship can be easily conceived by exempliTying iT as The absence oT booing and ieering aT an inTerscholasTic physical conTesT. wheTher iT be baskeTball, baseball, or soccer in all of which Draper excels and has a Three-leTTer record well above average. Draper has a sporTsmanlike repuTaTion ThaT has noT oTTen been marred. This qualiTy, however, is more Than a gualiT merely presenT in a physical conTesT. A person in order To succeed musT be a goodIsporT, ThaT is, have The abiliTy To Take a joke laughingly, wheTher iT be on anoTher Tellow or on himselT. The above suggesTion shows ThaT sporTsmanship does noT always perTain To The baskeTball Tloor or baseball diamond buT To one's whole environmenT as well. H During The pasT Tour years, Tour qualiTies have seemed To pervade The aTmosphere of Draper High-The Tour qualiTies l have aTTempTed To analyze and define. And so, mindful ol: These Tour qualiTie's ThaT have never ceased To Tollow and direcT our paThs Through Draper Halls, we dedicaTe our yearbook, The Draperian . i N
