' ' , P' WITH DEEP SINCERITY AND RESPECT, WE DEDICATE OUR BOOK TO YOUTH, THE YOUTH OF TODAY AND OE MANY TOMORROWS. MARY B. BOUSE MARION B. MORRIS CLASS DEANS MADELINE GRAVES THERESE WIENECKE YOUTH .Four years ago. when we firsf enfered Draper High School. we were liffle more fhan children. Physically. menfally. and spirifually. we could hardly be called adulfs or even young men and women. We self-consciously bore fhe painful characferisfics of adolescenfs: we were shy. hard-working. eager fo please youngsfers in shorf dresses and knickers. Gradually. as we advanced in years and in school. we grew up. If seemed fhaf suddenly. over nighf almosf. we sprang from gangling childhood info young man and womanhood. ln fhoughf and deed. we were older. more ready fo fhink abouf faking our place in fhe world. Buf during fhe four years in which fhis greaf change occurred. we had much fo learn. fo experience. and fo pass on fo ofhers. Firsf of all. we acquired personalify. We learned fhaf we were beffer people for being ourselves: we discovered fhaf a world full of persons cuf from fhe same paffern would be a boring place in which fo live. We found fhaf we wanfed variefy in our choice of friends: we sfrove fo find ourselves. and in so doing. discovered our personalifies. We were no longer puppefs. buf individuals. As we advanced in school. so did our culfural background broaden. From a wealfh of books and under fhe friendly guidance of feachers. we developed our in- fellecf and our abilifies. We amassed a greaf deal of knowldge, fhus fiffing our- selves fo cope more ably wifh an ever-changing world. We worked and sfudied for four long years. somefimes wondering if all our efforfs would ever be worfh fhe reward-if indeed fhere was one. Buf now. as we look back. fhere is no such quesfion in our minds. We know fhaf none of our fime has been wasfed: we know fhaf all fhrough life. we will confinue fo absorb knowledge and fo grow menfally. We have learned fhe price of experience. and hav profifed: we have realized fh fruifs of labor. and have prospered: we have reached ouf, and have found. perhaps fo our surprise. fhaf we are capable of a greaf deal more fhan we had fhoughf was possible. We realize now. fhaf we are sfanding on fhe brink of opporfunify, Thus if is fhe world over. The young people are abouf fo fake fheir places in fhe world. This assuming of responsibilify is nafural and righf. for fhe young have always replaced fhe old. Each new generafion feels confidenf fhaf if is prepared and qualified fo do fhe fask a liffle beffer fhan fhose af fhe helm. Yef if is fhey of each new gener- afion who advance fhe world so much fhaf soon fhey find fhemselves slipping. They can'f quife keep up wifh fheir own increased fempo. Then if is fhaf fhey relinquish fheir work and fheir dreams fo youfh.-youfh. confidenf. sure. eager. fresh. full of life. We are fhe youfh of foday. Tomorrow. we are men and women. All foo soon. we are old and musf give over our world fo ofhers. One youfh passes fhe forch on fo anofher: in fhis way. fhe world is forever young. If is wifh a mosf sincere prayer fhen. as we sfep info fhe greaf parade, fhaf we may do our parf fo keep fhe world young. I cannof be wrong in prophesying fhaf we can and will do our parf. THE HISTORY OF OUR CLASS ' The fall of T935 found Draper's halls filled mainly wifh fhe Freshmen fhaf now consfifufe fhe class of l939. Laughing derision and amused confempf followed our reddened ears as we blundered our way info fhe wrong classrooms and clambered up and down fhe wrong sfairs. The firsf assemblies were a source of wonder, and infimafe friends of fhe opposife sex were pracfically unknown. As fhe monfhs passed. however. we acquired sufficienf courage fo engage in our firsf love affairs. Soon exams were behind us. and we were full-fledged sophomores. With one year's conquesf af our backs. we resolufely furned our minds fo fhe sfrenuous schedule before us. Our once-happy days of wafer pisfols. rubber bands and pigfails were over. lSubiecf fo debafe.l We felf less conspicuous as our leafher heels pounded fhrough sfudy halls, amid fhe glances of ifs occupanfs. Laughfer af fhe new Freshmen was even affempfed. alfhough success was rafher minufe. Infensive sfudy quickly found us climbing info fhaf posifion commonly known as "flunkies," buf officially as Juniors. Junior class organizafion faced us. and we elecfed fhe following officers: Presidenf. Fred Shoemaker: Vice-Presidenf. Roy Edelfelf: Secrefary, Kennefh Mac- Donald. Guided by fhsi able leadership, we successfully presenfed food sales and noon dances. The climax of fhe year was our Junior Prom. Despife fhe good weafher we had enioyed fhe enfire previous week. on fhe Friday fhaf fhe Prom was presenfed, if rained persisfenfly and fhoroughly unfil lafe affernoon, when fhe sun broke fhrough fhe clouds. fo add a golden fouch of loveliness fo our May-pole. Of course, our dance was a huge success, fhe highlighf of fhe evening occurring when Miriam Maffhews was crowned Queen of fhe Prom! Wifh fhe complefion of fhis dance, Juniors forgof class acfivifies and fheir newly acquired air of nonchalance and fried desperafely lfhough somefimes fufilelyl fo graduafe fo fhaf long hoped for and dreamed of Senior year. Sepfember of T938 found us proudly lounging in fhe halls. laughing af fhe common enemy--fhe Freshman. The inifial class meefing found fhe following officers elecfed: Presidenf, Leonard Mack: Vice-Presidenf, Charles Briggs: Secrefary, Miriam Maffhews. Lafer, in fhe middle of our '39 feam, when Charles Briggs leff school, fhe posifion of vice-presidenf was filled by Lawrence Kirkpafrick. The capable and persisfenf leadership shown by fhese officers allowed us fo presenf varied acfivifies. Food sales, a card parfy, Chrisfmas card sales, and a superbly acfed and direcfed play, presenfed before a capacify audience in Draper's new audiforium, made our acfivifies varied and successful. Plans for our Senior Trip and Senior Ball are almosf complefed, and rumor has if fhaf fhe World's Fair will be honored by our presence, and Colonie Counfry Club by our dancers. The Draperian nears complefion, and affenfion is cenfered upon graduafion, ifs worries and fears. Recenf cap and gown measuremenfs are very reassuring buf cerfainly mean liH'le-as yef. Buf fhe few remaining weeks of school will undoubfedly mean a greaf deal fo us-as Seniors. NOTES FROM MY LITTLE BLACK BOOK May is, 1949 My Train pulled inTo The sTaTion aT 8:38 a. rn., and, alighTing, I hopped inTo a Taxi To Take me back To school. Imagine my surprise aT seeing William Harfie behind The wheel. lMinus The haircuT-I hardly knew him.l AT school, I sfepped ouT of The Taxi and almosT knocked over Mary Fran Breunig who was calling for six-year-old Bill Jr., who was beginning school. She said ThaT Bill Sr. was aImosT a general. In The office, I found Eunice Borden, working as Mr. Baker's privaTe secreTary, and KaTherine Lane, as Mr. Zimmer's righT hand helper. I walked around The halls for awhile, peeking inTo The classrooms. In one, I found Esfher BarTley explaining The TangenT of x-y lshe looked disgusTed, Too: her eyes were acfually bIazing.l In anoTher room, Cafherine OTTman's French Il class, I spied "ShirTs" Hamil, spelling The French aIphabeT. lThose good old daysll 'AfTer chaTTing wiTh old friends unTiI noon. Well, who could do a beTTer iob of modeling? LaTer, as I was dashing across a sTreeT inTersecTion, Trying To "beaT The lighT," I was hasTily sTopped by officer Bob Rannie. A uniform does do someThing for one, doesn'T iT? Anyway, he warned me abouT Taking such risks, and ThreaTened To "puII me up" before Judge Geores. M.D., ioined us and asked me To "Jack's" for dinner. "Jack's" was, as I soon discovered. a resTauranT owned and operafed by no less a person Than Jack Congerl We had an exceIIenT meal, and Then rode down To The Civic Playhouse- where BerTha Senecal was sTarring in Lawrence KirkpaTrick's new play "FirsT Good ForTune." lRemember "Beginner's Luck"?l We were surprised no end when. during inTermission.
