ond in Conclusion Football RON SHELLADY-T BRIAN WILLIAMS-QB JERRY ROGERS-LH X Q - X JESSIE McCOY-QB GENE SCHULTZ-T MAURICE WEBERT-G Highly iubilant, they traveled the following week to play West Texas State and ran into Lady Luck as bad breaks left the Bulldogs trailing 20-O at half-time. They bounced back in the last half to completely outclass the West Texans but couldn't overcome the deficit, losing 34-21. The Drake eleven returned home to encounter Washington of Saint Louis before a combined Homecoming and Parents Weekend crowd. The rain again returned and through 57 minutes of hard-fought football played in a sea of mud, the game remained scoreless. But to the delight of the Bulldog rooters, Drake fought even harder to produce a 7-O victory to put icing on the homecoming cake. The remainder of the season found Drake on the road, and travel must have again stimulated the Bulldogs, as they entered the Wichita game 35 point underdogs but ended the first half leading 7-6. The old story of manpower told the tale, though, as the Shockers wore down the hard fighting Drake eleven to win 20-7. North Texas State, third ranked offensive team in the nation, had trouble with the charged-up Drake eleven during the first half but came back strong, scoring 46 points in the second half to win by 60 points, 62-2. The season ended on a dismal note and the record stood 2-7, but the black and white statistics couldn't possibly tell the whole story. A group of Drake footballers faced a long season of daily practices, rugged opponents, Monday morning quarter- backs, and the discouraging aspect of playing on a losing team. Through all these diversities they gave whole-heartedly the spirit and fight which makes college life what it is.
