The College of Education, which became a part of Drake University in 1888, prepares teachers for all levels of school organization from kindergarten Through college. The first goal of teacher training is provided for through a Liberal Arts program. Here along with other Drake students, the prospective teacher studies Eng- lish, literature, social studies, science and physical edu- cation. The second goal, and perhaps the most im- portant, is met through subiect matter courses in the area in which the student chooses to teach. The third goal, professional training and experience, is extended Education College DEAN DONALD WALLACE through a program of i8 hours of study in psychology and education that provides the future teacher with understanding of human behavior and learning. This program leads into student teaching. This year 2,062 students enrolled in the College of Education. A total of 475 regular daytime students, 590 special Saturday students, and 997 community or extension students studied education courses. Student teachers were distributed among the Des Moines schools. Almost 300 student teachers were placed in schools during the fall semester. MEMORIAL HALL Home of education classes.
