or TRUSTEES Witli the realization of plans for a greater Drake in the construction of a S100,000 library, the board of trustees has achieved one of its goals of adding brightness to mellowness in campus beauty. Gift of the Gardner Cowles foundation, the structure will face the women's dormitory, mirroring its Georgian architecture. Under the guidance of President Morehouse and Miss Mary Bell Nethercut, librarian, the proposed two-story building will contain study rooms, re- serve book sections, stacks and work rooms on the first fioor. Twenty carrels, individual study rooms, will be niched in the north end of the second floor, where glass brick will light pages of Euclid, of Pliny, of an occasional modern novel. Ideal plans of 50 university libraries have been con- sidered in sculpturing library convenience. Drake alumnae responded to the call for contributions, robbing the gymnasium of its old drabness, and drawing university men to mixed volleyball games, dances in the recreation room, basketball, badmin- ton and suppers sponsored by the inde- pendent Women. R. M. EVANS Vice-Chairman Founders' Day dinner, May 7, saw 800 gather at the fieldhouse at a dinner honoring the fifty- sixth year of Drake history and the long service of Professors Kinney and Kirk. Dr. Williaiii A. Shullenberger acted as toastmaster and Dr. Edward Scribner Ames of the University of Chicago was main speaker. The Drake band, glee clubs and male quartet entertained at the climax of the ceremonies, after chapel, a tea dance and the spring varsity football struggle had highlighted the afternoon. Dr. Morehouse, Dr. Shullenberger and Dr. Ames spoke over radio station KRNT as a statewide gesture in recognition of the anniversary. T151

PRESIDENT DANIEL XVALTER MOREIIOUSE The joy of success in a great experiment belongs to President More- house as the school year fades. A new library to come, a new science hall, a success greater than ever in a track classic of cinder path and pit have given promise that Drake University, for all its fifty-six years, will assume a more lasting niche in the story-book of western education. Following upon the footsteps of former President Herbert Hoover and Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt, journalist Wfalter Lippmann addresses the seniors of 1937.
