TI-IE INSTITUTE OF FINE ARTS BY DEAN HOLMES COWPER In IQOO Frederick Howard came to Drake University as Dean of the lXfIusic Department. I-Ie found little to work with, but being a man of business experience and foresight, he soon established the department on the sound foundation which has formed the basis of its growth in standards and enrollment. I-Ie remained with the institution some eight years. YVhen he died, he left besides many friends, a monument-Howard Hall-one ofthe best equipped music buildings in this part of the country. This building, made possible by his untiring efforts, has, as the home of the Drake University Institute of Fine Arts, become a veritable art center for Iowa. The Institute has as its mission, the providing of advantages for students of music, drama, and art, which the private teacher is unable to offer. The Well- trained artist must have a poised, sympathetic, well-rounded personality, in har- mony with the highest ideals of education and life. The Drake Institute of Fine Arts attains these ideals. It is an integral part of the University, having courses which are correlated with those of the other colleges. A stimulating cultural atmosphere surrounds the student, who has many opportunities to hear artists of international reputation. The faculty of the Fine Arts department are themselves artists. A number of them have studied in Europe and have appeared in the great music centers of the world. They are enthusiastically devoted to their calling, and as sympathetic and cultured men and women, they are a constant inspiration to their students. Wt Page 25

EQ E duca THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION BY DEAN VVM. F. BARR The College of Education of Drake University is nearly as old as the institution itself. For many years, what is now the College of Education was called the normal department and included the preparatory department ofthe University as Well as the professional work preparatory to teaching. Like other schools engaged in training teachers, the professional courses during the earlier years did not require high school graduation for entrance. Now the entrance requirements are the same as those for the College of Liberal Arts and the College course is four years in length, leading to the Bachelor of Science degree. In addition to the regular college course there are several two-year courses upon the completion of which the state grants the graduate a flve-year state certificate. At the present time these courses pre- pare music, kindergarten, primary, and grade teachers. For the coming year there is added a two-year commercial teacher's course. The two-year music course after September IQ24 will be changed to a three-year course. Graduates of the College of Education of Drake University are found in the best schools not only of Iowa, but of other states throughout the United States, and not a few have taught in our insular possessions. The faculty of the College of Education of Drake University is recognized as being in every way highly efficient, and the work is accepted in other schools throughout the United States. We believe that there is no better professional future for a young Woman whose personal characteristics qualify her for such Work than in teaching, and for this reason we are glad to have the young women of the University enter upon the elementary courses. There is a larger number of men enrolled in the College of Education this year than at any time since the preparatory department was drppped.
