Monnuousrs .Jrlivzg l'rmizlr11i To a student Drake University is more than an aggregation of col- lege buildings, a campus, and courses of study. lt is a place Where spirit and inspiration are generated, Where personalities are conceived and led to unfold, where minds are taught to comprehend, and judgments are formed through inductive processes. A Freshman comes to the University, a planetesimal, as it Were, with eccentric paths, nebulous ideas, and littleior no atmosphere except the primitive type. He comes into the academic lield of the Univer- sity, his eccentricities are reduced, his nebulous thinking becomes nuc- leated and organized, he gains an atmosphere through accretion. In short, he evolves into a man and a student. A system of individuals is not essentially dillerent from a system of matter. lt is possible to diiler only in the animate function. Other distinguishing characteristics may be only physical properties. A power- ful magnet dillers from an iron bar by its treatment and the definite organization of its constituent parts. A sun differs from a planet be- cause of its higher state of development. A Drake man is not one who has spent four years in and about the buildings from Twenty-fourth to Twenty-eighth Streets, but one who has found a useful place in the organized systems of society.
