It is useless to waste time discussing the frivilous, undecided Freshman days, nor the heartbreaks suffered by the envious Sophomores, or even the romantic state of being that expressed itself magnanimously while we are Juniors. For, is there anything more gratifying for an educated Senior to do than close the door forever on his babyhood days as having completed a good job of growing up, so why not skip it? He is more interested in being a big shot. His time is spent comparatively like that of the wooden beats on the last night of a carnival. Every last effort is put forth to obtain the maximum results before the grand climax. His shoulders may sag from the heavy load of over braininity, of course, putting a lot of emphases on the word may. Or his countance may pale at the mention of no Washington, D.C- He is reaching for each and every ticket as this is his last chance to absorb to the inth degree his pedigocial experiences. Probably he realizes that when the brake is put on the last cord played he will be let down out of the air with nothing save a memory of once upon a time. HELEN BALDWIN “Our Faithful Music Teacher” Stop—listen—what goes thar? Behold, it's a Plymouth car. Who's at that the wheel? Let me see— Just as I thought—the driver’s 'Kuhnsy.’’ Hark—wait a minute—what's that sound? Someone playing The Music Goes Round and Round. Wonder who’s at the piano-—let’s go see,-Lo and behold—it’s our ’’Kuhnsy.” Listen—what’s all that noise? Sounds like a bunch of girls and boys, Singing—what a racket—oh my! oh me! Tis hard on the nerves of poor Kuhnsy. Hark—is that music? Oh! my ears— I know now it’s the Melodeers, Practicing hard to be perfect, you see. Here's the best of luck to Mr. Kuhnsy.” anna McAllister Class Poem Behold! Life’s door swings open and beckons us come— We stand at the threshold Life has begun! Now life is ours, It calls to us all, The rich, the poor, The great and the small. God gave us a life, But it’s not ours for long, So make it worthwhile As you go along. Some days may be dreary, And some may be gray— Face them with courage,-Keep on the way! Glory in freedom! Smile at the sun! Take it all squarely— Sorrow and fun. Look to the hills, Look to the sky, Live as a friend To the Maker on High! —Evelyn Brown Page Thirty-two ROUND TABLE (With apologies to Sara Teasdale) Fog — Running feet, A tussle, A shout, A shot! A scream! A thud, A groan,— Fog. Fog,— A dim moon, Two persons on A park bench, Whisperings, A sigh, A caress, A slap! ! Fog. ROY ESHLEMAN. Fog — Two cats, A back yard fence Serenade, Expostulations! Flying shoes and Alarm clocks! Silence, Fog. Night Life of the Faculty When we re in English, History, or Math, Our teachers assail us with self-righteous wrath; And as for the way we act and behave, Oh, how the dear souls do fuss and rave! But there comes a time when even they, Forget their woes and troubled way,-The students become a thing of the past,-The pro’s' go to town, and do they go fast! It seems that each teacher, young or old, Hooks a chaperon to have and to hold; As they go to the movies, to dances, on rides, Each one in the other happily confides. And if they’ve enjoyed the evening full well, Next day the studies and classes go swell; The students then study and behave so well, Everyone feels great, they forget the bell. It’s grand that things are just as they are, For these ventures, encouraged, bring life up to par,- Even the students appreciate smiles, And thank the Dear Lord that someone’s worthwhile.’’ No longer do teachers squabble and rave, The best of their temperment they try to save,-For after school they'll meet someone who cares, And the joy of life will surely be theirs. Please don’t blame me for these verses of wit, Miss Ulrich asked me, and here is my writ; And when she finds out, she'll sure have a fit, What do I do now? — quick, Henry, the flit! Longfellow (alias) MUSSELMAN Book Reports First it is Biography; Then soon after History; Followed closely by Poetry; My, what shall become of me! Of some hero’s noble deed Or Modern Novel we must read; Then there are essays, yes indeed! Where, oh where will all this lead! If some day the teacher said No more books need ever be read, I am sure I'd fall down dead, 'Twould be too much for my poor head. LILLIAN PAIGE The School Fence Speaks or What FHave You Will I never be finished?’’ the school fence cried, As I walked along the track, Do you think I'll be finished and done When the winter snows come back? I’ve braved the heat of summer And the winter’s snow and cold, But I don't think I’ll be finished Till you are grey and old. Why yes, I said, you’ll soon be finished Along about in May. SENIOR PLAY “Big Hearted Herbert” The senior class play Big Hearted Herbert by Anna Steese Richardson and Sophie Kerr was very successfully presented by a grand cast on Friday evening April 17. The amusing plot presented the trials of an indignant but cowed family to overcome the tyranny of a middle-aged self-centered business man. After a night of insults from Herbert, when the daughter's prospective in-laws came for a visit, the family held a pow-wow and gave Herbert the darndist plainest dinner he ever had and shocked his best customer. After a severe talking-to by his wife, Elizabeth, Herbert concedes to his daughter’s marriage and his son’s college education and peace is restored. THE CAST Herbert Kalness...... WALTER SNYDER Downingtown P. T. A. has had a succesful year, with meetings held each month. The theme for the year has been GUIDANCE. We have had leading speakers speak on the following phases of Guidance:—Social Guidance, Vocational Guidance and Its Relationship to Parents. Physical Guidance, Educational Guidance, and Parent-Teacher Relationship. Founders Day was fittingly observed at our February meeting. Close cooperation exists between the home and the school. Teachers are encouraged to do their best by the fact that the fathers and mothers are working with them for the good of the boys and girls of Downingtown. The P. T. A. is grateful to the Music Department of the High School for the valuable service rendered at each meeting and for the splendid Candlelight Service at the December meeting. The P. T. A. willingly provides milk to the undernourished children of our school, and has been very liberal in financing many worthwhile attributes to our happiness. This verse seems fitting to the members of the P. T. A.: It isn’t the task of the few— The pick of the brave and the strong,-It's he and it’s I, and it’s you Must drive the good vessel along. Will you save? Will you work? Will you fight? Are you ready to take off your coat? Are you serving your State? Are you pulling your weight— Are you pulling your weight in the boat? —Selected. Evelyn Petrella: I don’t like that Lenhart boy. Eddie Pollock: What’s wrong with him? Eveiyn: He's one of those persons who always turns around and stares after you. Eddie: Is he? How do you know? Peggy Ax: Are you really on the football team? What position do you play? Ronnie Collins: Well, I do the air work. Peggy: Oh, you’re the forward passer, is that it?” Ronnie: No, I blow up the footballs. Page Sixty-two School Menu ► i. But you have done it only seventeen times. Explain, please. Wilson Bicking: Yes, ma'am, my arithmetic is bad too. Jim Diffenderfer: There isn’t a girl in school with a voice like my girl’s—so soft, liquid, flowing—’ Harry Dennis: Yeah, but you can't stop the flow. During his life he was no fool, He loved to eat and go to school. Robert Romig lies here at rest, His life was ever spent in quest; Of love, fame, and fortune great, Which he tried to gain in a Ford V-8. Edna Speirs, happy and gay, Passed away the other day, And now she’s up with her creator, Who blesses the soul of the debator. Everyone is filled with woe, Why did Rita have to go? Her boy friend smacked her with a sword. And that was the end of Rita Ward. Helen Tweed lies cold and dead, She died a horrible death, it’s said. Still she might be doing worse, Than riding in a large black hearse. Here beneath this marble slab, Lies the body of Helen MacNab. Her life was joyous and full of fun, Now watch her up to heaven run. Betty Wertz’s death is very queer. She died of shock, alas we fear! Her last words were: It can’t happen here, That I should get more than one date a year.” Here lies poor old Horace Miller,-They say he was a lady killer. His hair was blond like Nelson Eddy, And he could go to town” when he got ready. Gone Tomorrow— Once this corpse cheered at every game,-Mary Norris was her name. Now the angels sing her fame, Since she in heaven came. Sara Griffith occupies this hole,-Heaven rest her departed soul. She was a pal to the finale. Again—heaven bless our beloved Sally. Nels Olsen lies within this grave,-The piano’s art he tried to save. Now he’s playing Bach and Ravel Down in Hades with the Devil. No wonder everyone wants to bawl, Tom Pawling has answered his Maker’s call. That’s not Pikes Peak it’s just a mound Where Tom’s body lies in a hole in the ground. Here Dot Laird is laid to rest, Her short-lived life was one of the best. She was noisy, but she'll get by Tooting Gabriel’s horn up in the sky. Here lies the body of John H. Reist. He skidded through traffic as though it were ice. He didn’t believe in the Good Book, and so— Now he's dressed up and has no place to go.
