Although square dancing has its origins far back in Europearl folk dancing, it is as American as baseball, hot dogs, or a coke ot the dorner drug store. The pioneers who came to this new world, during the Elizabethan period and later, brought these folk dances with them and carried them along as the young nation expanded westward. The square dance as we k ow it today has evolved as result of the originality of these pioneers, with early all sections of the country contributing something to the figures, patter s and calls, and even today the some dances vary widely in different parts f our nation. Square dancing is more popular today than at any time in its history, and all indications are that it is not a short-lived fad, but will be with a long time to come, perhaps because its roots go so deeply into our American culture. s for basic Members of the Volsung staff have chosen the square dance as the theme of this year's book for many of the same reasons which mok dance itself so popular. For one thing, square dancing means friendliness and sociability the world right now could use a great deal more of both. lf you aren' ing to be friendly and sociable, you might as well forget about square ing. If you are quick to anger, especially at other people's mistake won't find much fun in square dancing, and will soon give it up. Square dancing also means organization. All of the dances have patterns which make them easy to learn after a little instruction and tice. e the , and will- onc- , you basic prac- Square dancing means co-operation and teamwork, with each member of the set doing his own part in time and sequence. Square dancing, to be successful in its purpose, requires attentio obedience. Since any single dance pattern depends on the words caller, every member of the square must listen to the caller and foll instructions. Otherwise, there is confusion, although the confusion put straight again quickly and easily. and f the w his y be Sociologists who make a study of our social habits probably will lagree that square dancing is going to benefit the country, with everyone, from tots to totterers, having more fun than they've ever had before. It is a co-cLpera- tive thing, helping people to play together with friendliness and unselfisl ness, just as a fragment of one call says: X Your girl's pretty, so is mine, l'll swing yours and you swing mine. Your individual scholas- tic achievements have been carefully recorded and evaluated, and your names are listed as members of a graduating class. For each of you this indicates a real m 'asure of success. We hope your high school training has prep red you to think constructively. It has been found that one o the most power- i ful forces in the world today is the mind of man. It is in the x minds and hearts of people that ideas are orn-a force for 5 good or evil. Bad ideas bring death and estruction, good ideas save lives and promote progress. Our country's strength lies in the ability of our people CIY Y to create, express and implement ideas. M your ideas help you to be the kind of citizen your family, our school, and g your country may be proud to acclaim. C. F. SH Superint ndent BAUGH Mr. Clifford F. Students at the Rancho have the some studies as students in Downey Union High School, and in addition, many at them take up hobbies such as weaving, leather work, and embroidery. Usually there are several students in the graduating class, but this year only one student, Dean Evans, will complete his work, and he will receive his diploma from Covina High School, not Downey. Freshmen enrolled are William Schenk, Ronald Richards, Elaine Brockway, Frederick Martin, Genevieve Johnson, Jerry Stein, Dennis Monroe, Marjorie Hill, Arnold Morand, Carmilla LaBlu, Au- gust LaBIu, and Claude Dallon. ln the sophomore class are Jean Barker, James Cisneros, Ronald Granlee, Carlo Ciseri and Claudia Rich. Robert Myers is the only junior. Mr, Theodore R. Maurer is in charge of all courses at the Rancho, and in addition is principal of adult education in the evening school. He and his valuable assistants, Ed Bragg and Bill Montgomery, have given much,of their time and hard work to make the Viking team of l95O a success. Following three weeks of hard preVseasonaI practice, the Vikings ran over their first four opponents in non-league games, piling up 98 digits to the oppohents' l3. Citrus was beaten at Downey, 39-6, El Segundo fell on the Viking field, 25-O, Huntington Beach were victims ,on their own grounds, I9-O, and Brawley was trimmed on the Viking field, l5-7. ln their first league encounter, the Maroon and White met a powerful Covina team and met their first defeat on the home field, 35-7. Covina went on to, take the league title. With several players out because of ahnflu epidemic, the Vi- kings bowed for the second and final ti e to Rosemead, 13-6, To finish the season right, the Vikings nudged Monte- bello, I4-7 at Montebello, and trounced Bell Gardens, 27-6, on the Viking field. , Besides placing four men in the All-League selections, more honor was bestowed upon our team when Coach Smither- an stated that the l9'5O varsity was the finest team he had coached since the championship team of l945. For the first time at Downey the Bees played at twilight immediately preceding the night varsity game, and it proved to be a successful experiment. Not quite familiar with his material, Coach Nelson tried many different formations to suit his players' abilities. Before they found themselves they were dunked in their first game by Citrus, 6-O, at Downey. The following week the Norsebabes got hot and pushed around EI Segundo for a 32-6 verdict under the lights of the home ground. ln the next game, at Huntington Beach, the Oilers held the fiery little Vikes scoreless at they pushed across two touchdowns to win, l2-O. Downey jumped back in the win column by dumping Bellflower Christian, I8-O, in the final practice tilt on Downey soil, and on the same field the fol- lowing week the Colts from Covina were tamed, I3-7, for the first league victory. Rosemead fell next at Downey, l2-O, but at Montebello the Norsebabes suffered their first league loss, 32-6. Winding up the season, Downey sent the Lancers back to Bell Gardens with a 6-2 loss pinned on them, and the Bees ended the season in a three-way tie for the league championship with Montebello and Covina. Jack Garcia, a rambling halfback, and Paul Soby, a fighting guard, were chosen co-captains at the season's end. Varsity Baseball Season Even with seven returning lettermen, the Vikings could not seem to get together for a winning team. Victorious only once in eight league encounters, the local horsehiders fin- ished at the bottom of the league ladder. The highlights of the season came before Downey entered league play when they dump- ed South Gate and El Monte nines. They also showed up very well in the Pomona 20-30 tournament by dumping Antelope Valley. The Vikings dropped three heartbreakers in league games. Covina nudged them 6-5 in two extra innings, and both Bell Gardens and Montebello slapped setbacks on our team although the Downey hurlers threw two hitters at both of them. All league selections showed that the Vil: ings did have some outstanding players when they placed four men on the two imaginary teams.. Jim Hagey was placed in a first string in- field spot, and George Leverenz, short stop, pitcher, Jim Wood and outfielder, John Wil- liams made the second team. J. V. Season Winding up in second place be- hind Bell Gardens in the league standings, the Viking Jayvees dis- played much promise for the suc- cess of next year's varsity nine. With a league record of five wins and three losses, including double wins over Covina and Rosemead, a split with Montebello, and two losses to Bell Gardens, Coach Kincaid has just cause to be proud of his local nine. Being expected to contribute to the benefit of next year's varsity are such players as hard batting Kenny Ganser, infielders Ben Rogers, Ken- ney Copeland, Dave Gardea, and pitchers Jack Rystrom and Fred Steinen. Coach O'Brien's varsity team finished fourth in league standings, as did his Cees. Using most of his best men from the Cees and the ones that could have run varsity, he combined them together to run in the Bee division, and therefore had a second place Bee team. Such standouts as Jim Ball, Richard Weber, Rod Fredrickson, and Bob Fuller highlighted the season. ln the league finals, the varsity placed four men while the Bees placed six, and the Cees two. Jim Ball took first in both the high and low hurdles, and second in the broadjump. He went all the way to the CIF finals before being eliminated. Richard Weber took a second in the league finals, and also went to the CIF finals before being eliminated. Don Barnett and Mayne Whitmore both took first in the shot put and pole vaults respectively. ln the Bee division, Dave Rodriguez won the l32O-yard run in the league finals, and placed second in the CIF finals. Others placing in the ieague competition were Rod Frodrickson with a second and a third in both the lOO and 220, Bib Fuller with a first and third in the lOO and 220, and Lanny Qugley with a first in the 660-yard run. The Bee team turned in the best record, with seven wins against only two losses, against El Segundo and Inglewood, both by one-point margins. The doubles team of Don Ball and Vern Nogle proved the best in the league, and the other doubles team of Clarence Almich and Bob Odle also turned a goodly share of victories. Almich, Odle, Lyman Frazier and Ball were sent to the league play-offs, but were eliminated. The iunior varsity had a better win-loss record than the varsity, due to the fact that Bell Gardens had no JV team, and therefore forfeited to the Downey racqueteers, who ended the season with a record of five victories, three losses. Without the use of the same characteristics necessary to a good square dance, this annual could never have been created. ln a staff as large as ours, there must be co-operation just as in a square dance. ln planning pages to interest every- one, fun must be included. Here are all the interesting facts which surrounded the even more interesting junior class play, Mother ls A Freshman. As the mother with an empty pocketbook and young ideas, Ruth Griffin did a wonderful iob as Mrs. Abbot. Playing her love-struck daughter, Barbara Lowe had no trouble at all deciding be- tween her biology professor, David Norman and her boy friends, Bob Fuller. However the prof had other ideas and finally won the heart of Mrs. Abbot. Presented November 29 and 30, the play took in S563 from tickets, and from the comments fol- lowing these performances, it was indicated that everyone enjoyed the play. The story takes place in a quaint New England village and produces even quainter characters such as rustic yet suspicious Hepsey, the maid, played by Janet McCurdy, ond dull-witted Joe Pendleton, play- ed by Vern Nagle. Jane Hathaway and her unfortunate new husband, Mr. Ball, were played by Claire Hanly and Rod Frederick- son. To keep Hepsy on her toes, the town gossip, So- phrony Trotter, Margaret Ellis in reality, added many suspicious moments. Nearly every play has a romance. Lavender and Old Lace goes one better and has two. Joanne Strong as Ruth Thorne, Miss Hathaway's career-minded niece, and Bob Huber as the newcomer in town, take care of most of the love angle. As the sweet little old lady, Mary Ainslie, around which the story revolves, Pat Lucas consecutively turns down the romantic offers of her old friend, Dr. Patterson, J. R. McDonough, until the end of the play when he is finally encouraged. 11 ll ln Of course, Carl, darl' g.
