'Ol The special friendship that existed between Steve Watkins and David Brooks goes back to first grade when both were the same size at St. John's Lutheran School. Their friendship continued through 8th grade when both boys completed their education at St. Johns. Steve went on to Jeffers and David was at Central. Last fall at Dow High they were reunited and thoroughly enjoyed being locker partners and eating at the same table at lunch. The last time Steve saw David was November I4th when he wished David luck in deer hunting, just before both of them left school that day. David turned I6 on November 26th while in the hospital in Ann Arbor and died of complications from chicken pox on December 2nd. Not that day, but sometime later, Steve admits the tears came as he thought of all they had done together. Steve was often out at the Brooks. Both were avid readers of Ellery Queen, Agatha Christie and Dashiel Hammet. Both enjoyed the Brooks' family cottage on Houghton Lake, watching The Cosby Show and eating. Most of all Steve remembers David's courage in spite of migraine head- aches, kidney failure and about I4 major operations. Steve admired his ability to keep a sense of humor through the worst of times. Although we did not know him as well as Steve did, in just three months he taught us so much and we admired him more that he could ever know. Based on an interview with Steve Watkins, Class of '88.
