SONG f PIG 'G T ANS Bruce Springsteen A: Although he sings with a limited, raspy voice, Springsteen is an insightful, effective lyricist and an extraordinary perform- er. His mass appeal lies in his 'regular guy' image - faded blue jeans, red bandanas, and old tee-shirts. His lyrics dwell on everyday people and their struggles to lead good lives. Bruce's incredible four-hour stage shows con- sist of no special effects or glittery costume - just simple professional- ism. His energetic outpouring of feel- ing and the tremendous spirit that he creates can best be described by one of his devoted fans, I have been in a wheelchair seventeen years - be- cause of the war - and this man truly cares. One thing that Bruce's music teaches us is that even with all the things that happened in that war, with all the suffering, we can still love America. We can love it for the good things not the bad. From the working class, for the working class - Spring- steen is THE BOSS!! This Material Girl will definitely go down in history as a legend of the 8O's. Phil Collinsv: This squat, thirty-four year-old singer-drummer with a reced- ing hairline is not an obvious choice for heart-pounder of the year, but Phil Collins' fans don't think he's a joke - they love him. His number-one ballads such as Against All Odds and One More Night only added to his suc- cess. Today Collins is one of the hot- test commodities in pop music, his feet are on the ground and he's moving forward. His LP No Jacket Required is still creating number-one hits. The rest of the decade will definitely be influenced by this pop-star and his emotional ballads.
