Dow High 4 You may wonder how this yearbook staff chooses the theme each year - we often wondered, ourselves. Some- one, somehow came up with the idea of representing each type of student here at Dow High. Charger People be- came the theme - hopefully, we've captured a part of each one of you. As we look back on the school year we remember the good times S the bad, the victories S the defeats, our friends S our enemies. Three years can seem like such a long time and yet it can go by so quick- ly. These years create many impres- sions which eventually become lasting memories that can be looked upon to remember that special Charger spiritl Each person, when they walk out the doors for the very last time, receives their own personal set of memories. His mass appeal lies in his 'regular guy' image - faded blue jeans, red bandanas, and old tee-shirts. His lyrics dwell on everyday people and their struggles to lead good lives. Bruce's incredible four-hour stage shows con- sist of no special effects or glittery costume - just simple professional- ism. His energetic outpouring of feel- ing and the tremendous spirit that he creates can best be described by one of his devoted fans, I have been in a wheelchair seventeen years - be- cause of the war - and this man truly cares. One thing that Bruce's music teaches us is that even with all the things that happened in that war, with all the suffering, we can still love America. We can love it for the good things not the bad. From the working class, for the working class - Spring- steen is THE BOSS!! Madonna rt She's carefree, manipula- tive, and a bit risque - her belt buckle says she's a Boy Toy, and her famed naval has been seen all over the world - she's Madonna. ln l985, she became the year's top multi-media star with her hit LP Like A Virgin and her film debut in Desperately Seeking Susan . But. perhaps, Madonna is best known for her unshaven underarms in her 'im- modest' display shown in various 'adult' magazines. This Material Girl will definitely go down in history as a legend of the 8O's. Phil Collinsv: This squat, thirty-four year-old singer-drummer with a reced- ing hairline is not an obvious choice for heart-pounder of the year, but Phil Collins' fans don't think he's a joke - they love him. His number-one ballads such as Against All Odds and One More Night only added to his suc- cess. Today Collins is one of the hot- test commodities in pop music, his feet are on the ground and he's moving forward. His LP No Jacket Required is still creating number-one hits. The rest of the decade will definitely be influenced by this pop-star and his emotional ballads. Redd Foxx The Fall Guy The Cosby Show A 2 Thursday night has become the night to watch TV thanks to this fabulous show. Bill Cosby, stand-up comic, actor, and educator, returned to television this season starring in the highest rated new series on any network since the I978-i979 season. The Cosby- Show portrays the life of the Huxta- ble family as they deal with all kinds of problems that many families en- counter every day. The Cosby Show has that wonderful, caring, loving feeling storyline with the underlin- ing images that come across to the public. The true meaning of this show can best be described by Bill Cosby, himself, as quoted in Ebony magazine. This is a show with a Black American Family, but what's important in this show is that our family represents 90 percent of all people out in the audience. We are family and the humor comes out of our attitudes toward each other and life in general. This show will work to show all Americans that if they really love OUR children, all children are the same the world over. This dynamic TV show has people of all ages across the U.S. glued to the TV on Thursday nights. Miami Vicev: Starring in this blockbuster television show, Ricar- do CPhilip Michael Thomasj Tubbs and Sonny QDon Johnsonj Crockett play a pair of smooth operating de- tectives who cruise Miami's drug infested streets in a black Ferrari, wearing Gianni Versace suits and melt-on-your-skin Italian-made tank shirts. Thomas and Johnson have become heroes, sex symbols, and fashion plates - in fact, men are even getting married in Miami Vice Tuxedo wear. Since the season pre- miere their popularity has sur- passed anything imaginable. Miami Vice is such an exciting show that it is even keeping teenagers home on Friday nights. Thomas and Johnson are riding the crest of fortune and fame. They are rich, celebrated, and sought after - Will their popu- larity ever end? Coca-Cola proved that they too were number one in the fashion world as well as in the soft drink industry. Coke shirts, jeans, sweaters and hats swamped the stores as people of all ages fought over the correct size. Coke is itll Where The Boys Shop What's on top always counts, but this year it counted more than ever because shirts were bigger than ever! From whites to neon brights, big shirts were coming on strong over minis, stirrups and shorts. And the best place to buy them was in your favorite department store - in the boys' section. Authentic and inexpensive, these oversized shirts were accented with bow-ties, neckties, suspenders and extra- large sweaters also found in the boys' section. To add to the menswear effect, oxfords were the shoes to wear. With socks on the outside of the pants, the beaten-up look was the most popular. Borrowed from the boysl Baroque 8: Beaunful The spirit of the baroque era made an impressive comeback. This fall's fashions were overflowing with rich textures and designs of the seventeenth century. Brocade vests, tapestry skirts and paisley jackets were everywhere. But to achieve the true baroque-look. clothes needed to be accented with big and bold antique jewelry. Here at school, brooches and paisley were the things to wear. Yes. even the guys wore paisley!! This page is to recognize those Chargers who were Stars this year. These people and groups excelled in sports or academics or contributed to the school or community. C ha rge r S pi r it This year we had a new addition to Dow Charger spirit - The Dow High Dudes. At the Mid- land-Dow basketball game Jan. I7 they entertained us with a great pompon routine at half-time to J Giels Band's snappy song 'I Do', and with creative cheers and skits during time outs. To The Rescue Through bake sales, the Spanish Club aided desperate victims of the Mexican earthquake and Co- lumbian volcano disasters. They raised approximately S300 and donated it to the Red Cross. Can jam The National Honor Society got in the spirit of giving too by holding a jam session by the band Vis- cous Biscuits. The admission was one can goods or paper product and these items were donated to a relief agency in Pinconning. Debate At State Gerber? Wnmrv , F0005 ' The debate team of Chris Davis. An age - when almost anyone could ride in a spacecraft with a safe return - was ready to begin. Christa McAuliffe, a high school social studies teacher in Concord, N.H., was to be the first ordinary citizen to be launched into space. The preparation for the Challenger's tenth journey into space had been pains- takingly slow. The group, including two women, a black, a Hawaiian of Japa- nese descent, were ready to go. But then disaster struck. The Challenger, with barely a minute into its flight on Tuesday, January 28, I986 exploded and seven astro- nauts disappeared in an or- ange and white fireball nine miles above the Atlantic Gcean. The reaction was shock. horror and grief. The trage- dy brought a nation togeth- er in mourning. It also brought admiration for those who explore the heavens. Despite the horrors of the last spacecraft, the Chal- lenger catastrophe built American determination to push on and continue the quest in space. ,f-bl 1 an wigs - Peo e In The News ni li News Trlvla 4 w v 1 N I 1 Y xv 1 Y , H: ' MAJ S Check out Your Knowledge Of I985-86 Trivia I. It seemed like every morning students in Midland County would awake to pitter-patter on the roof. And what about the rain games? Friday afternoons, girls would rush home to get dressed, curl their hair and just look nice. Rain can definitely destroy a hairdo. High school students react to this weather in different ways. There are those who hide under umbrellas, those who scream and run to the car and those who stand up and cheer their team onto victory whether it be sunny, raining or even snowing. The male population was finally acknowledged with the first Dow High King and his court. Charles Downey had the pleasure of being crowned His Royal Highness. His name will definitely go down in history! Five representatives were chosen from each class with the royal title reserved for that special senior guy. The festivities lasted throughout the entire week. On Tuesday, Dow High was overrun by nerds. So much for the jocks overpowering the brains. An enormous amount of bed sheets were used for Wednesday's Toga Day with Thursday reserved for College Sweats Day. But the highlight of the week was definitely Hawaiian Day with everyone dressed for a luau. This marked the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Yet, she'lI constantly be nibbling on things from your tray. Just one bite , just a sip is all you'll hear. By the time you're finished, she has eaten half of your lunch. THE CHOWMAN: He'll eat everything and anything. He's the one who goes to Mac's and orders one of everything then goes back for seconds. THE PUSHER: She always buys lots of food, but rarely eats it. Everyone with her must eat a sample of allthe food on her tray, whether they want it or not. No one can leave until her tray is empty and everyone is full. They use their skills and abilities to teach their stu- dents. Classes range from Beginning Foods to Gour- met Foods. The Art Department offers a wide range of classes from Beginning Art to Stu- dio Art. The students' cre- ations fill the display win- dows with interesting shapes and colors that catch your eye. Even if college isn't in the cards for you, a knowledge of a foreign language can really be beneficial for you. You may even find that in some large urban areas, it is a necessity for everyday communication. Knowledge of a foreign language also makes you seem like a well rounded and intelligent individual Ceven if you're notj. This year the library has a new circulation program coming into effect. This is called the Winnebago program. Soon each person will have library cards to use which helps to make it easier for the students to check out their books. Another thing that is taking effect are the computers. Having the com- puters makes managing the work around the library a lot easier. says Mrs. Lindell, one of the librarians. Their friendship continued through 8th grade when both boys completed their education at St. Johns. Steve went on to Jeffers and David was at Central. Last fall at Dow High they were reunited and thoroughly enjoyed being locker partners and eating at the same table at lunch. The last time Steve saw David was November I4th when he wished David luck in deer hunting, just before both of them left school that day. David turned I6 on November 26th while in the hospital in Ann Arbor and died of complications from chicken pox on December 2nd. Not that day, but sometime later, Steve admits the tears came as he thought of all they had done together. Steve was often out at the Brooks. Both were avid readers of Ellery Queen, Agatha Christie and Dashiel Hammet. Both enjoyed the Brooks' family cottage on Houghton Lake, watching The Cosby Show and eating. Most of all Steve remembers David's courage in spite of migraine head- aches, kidney failure and about I4 major operations. Steve admired his ability to keep a sense of humor through the worst of times. Although we did not know him as well as Steve did, in just three months he taught us so much and we admired him more that he could ever know. Based on an interview with Steve Watkins, Class of '88. At Christmas. the students decorate the windows in the cafeteria and library to fill the school with holi- day spirits. They also take devoted time to usher at Renfair and work at concession stands. Even though these jobs seem to be unimportant to others, we appreciate a job well done. Again this year the Dra- ma Club has entertained us with their spectacular productions. Their pro- duction of Canterbury Tales was an orignial in the true sense of the word. The script was adapted and somewhat rewritten for production by Britton Seminar. Sen- ior Eric Gibson once again used his creative talents and wrote all the music - who ever thought we could actual- ly sing? I i This year in debate we argued the issue of wa- ter quality. Our final conclusion is that we all have only a short time to live. While some brain dead parties naively hang onto the miscon- ceived policies of the status quo, we, the affir- matives, intend to live our lives to the fullest. We propose to do this through a simple one- plank plana to avoid the issue of water quality in the future, and to also avoid perrier. It tastes yucky. There are several ac- tivities forthe German Klub. In the fall, the German Klub took a trip to Frankenmuth to bask in the enchant- ment of a rich German environment. In Fran- kenmuth, not only was a lot of good German food consumed, but it was also discovered that Gummi Bears stick to the windows of school buses quite nicely. In the season to be jolly, all of the for- eign language clubs got together to share in foreign customs. At this celebration, there was an abundance of interesting foreign foods to eat, as well as foreign versions of Well-known Christ- mas carols to sing. After this merrymak- ing, the lively German Klub went Christmas caroling throughout the school. 185 The Spanish Club had a bustling agenda of pro- jects this year. Acting on Bill's suggestion, we raised over S300 from bake sales to donate to the Red Cross to help victims of the Mexican earthquake and Colom- bian volcano disaster. Muchas gracias to Srta. Our year began without an advisor, and we are immensely grateful to Mr. Reilly for coming forward to provide the leadership we needed. ln the fall we were involved in several affairs at the International Dialogue for Educational African Affairs at Michigan State. We represented the tiny West African nation, Burlinc Fuso, for- merly Upper Volta. Not only did we learn about caucasing other dele- gates, we also learned how the US and the rest of the developed world attempt to force devel- oping countries into a submissive position. ln the Spring, we intend to make an excursion to the annual Hope College sim- ulation. C.M. Davis 187 . SL'-eff' Once again Dow High's student union has com- pleted a productive year. Each of the mem- bers, whether they are class officers or repre- sentatives at large, have put forth a lot of effort in making this school year a successful one. Good Luck next year BOECII , 189 Even though we missed a few deadlines, putting together this year's yearbook has been a lot of fun. We had a lot of new people this year. and although they had some problems at first, they soon seemed like old hands at such things as cropping, copy fitting, and find- ing just the right pic- ture to fit into the bot- tom right-hand corner. Remember - body copy is IO pt., caption copy is 8 pt., and a vertical picture can't fit into a horizontal boxl. Finally, the whole year- book staff would Iike to give their whole-heart- ed thanks to Mrs. Weeks-Rosten for all her help. Lynda Conrad - Editor 190 DOW HIGH QAPJ - This news flash is just in from Wackytown, LISA. Wacky Wonka, President of the American Wacky Association. has declared the Update staff the craziest group for the i985-86 school year. When Prince wrote Let's Go Crazy'. he had the Up- date staff in mind. Wonka said. Wonka cited several reasons for his choice. There was THE STORY Michelle entertained the seniors with. Then there was Marsha and Wendy's infatuation with Cad- bury eggs. Stacey was always ready to give a smile while Trish drove fshe's a terrible driverj everyone crazy. Then there was Steve Byrd fno explanation neededj. Jennifer and Michelle discovered that writing editori- als wasn't all it was cracked up to be, while everyone had trouble making it to class on time. Fighting for chairs was always fierce. And the veterans still have troubled figuring out the Scharnberg twins. lt's not so surprising that this class is totally off-the- waIl. Wonka said. The year began on a crazy note. with partners thinking of each other as animals. Things nev- er slowed down. The staff remained faithful in keeping up old Update traditions such as rarely meeting dead- lines. always finding a way to screw up things, typing stories in italics or using up gobs and gobs of headline paper. T This year's Pep Club was reorganized and came back as peppy as ever. Our football team start- ed a new tradition DOW-35, MHS-O so we had reason to be extra peppy this year. We rec- ognized team sports by appointing chairpersons for each one. These chairpersons played an important role because they got other members of the pep club involved by asking them to make cookies, posters and go to games and cheer them on to victory.
