Your pilots are Chau Pham and Joe Blahovec. Your Capcom is Mr. Snyder. Please strap yourself in. The countdown is about to begin. Everybody counts down to events at some point in his or her lifetime. Students also countdown to various events. Every sixteen year old counts the days till he or she gets a driver’s license. During the school day, students watch the clock and look forward to the end of the day. They count the days to when their term paper or report is due. Every teenager counts the years until he or she is out of high school. Once summer vacation begins students keep track of the days left until school commences. During the summer they may go on vacation with their family or go places with their friends to pass the time away. Some juniors may visit colleges during their vacation in preparation for their future decision. The incoming freshmen anticipate high school and wonder what it is going to be like. They may even worry about the way the upperclassmen will react to them. Most of all, as the new academic year draws closer, students take advantage of the remaining days by “counting down.” The Olympics play an important part in world relations and patriotism. Many students watched the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and followed the progress of the American athletes. A few of our students and teachers were lucky enough to go to California to see the 1984 Olympics. Others followed the Olympics by watching them on national television or by reading the newspaper. Some went to see the ticker tape parade given to the American athletes in New York City. LEFT — Julianna McNamara and Mary Lou Retton, LEFT MIDDLE — Tracee Ruiz, BOTTOM LEFT— Rowdy Gaines and Teammate, BOTTOM RIGHT — Tim Daggett and Michelle Dusserre. T-MINUS 8 Many students at Dover High spend some of their summer vacation earning money. Some deliver newspapers in their neighborhood. Others work at various businesses in the Rockaway Townsquare Mall such as toy stores, clothing stores, fastfood restaurants, theaters, and record shops. Students also work at stores in Dover and surrounding towns. On these pages we see the following students at work: TOP LEFT — Pierre Gagne bussing tables at Harold’s Pub, ABOVE LEFT — working at DHS are Lillian Medina, Ada Acevedo, and Mayra Soto, ABOVE — Nacie Lewis cashiers at Jamesway, ABOVE RIGHT — sandwich maker Tom Fahy at Harold’s Pub, TOP RIGHT — Janet Valentin at Jamesway, RIGHT — Denise Buechel waits on customers at Welch’s and FAR RIGHT — Mona Ugalde works as a secretary at the Pena Real Estate Office. 4 T-MINUS 7 5 T-MINUS 6 Students also spend some of their spare time during the summer trying to keep cool. Whether they go to the shore, Action Park, or stay home, they have fun while doing it. They may be lucky enough to have a friend with a pool that they can use. Here are a few pictures of some students enjoying the water: RIGHT — Leif Bostrom caught in a water volleyball game. BELOW — Tara Barth and Jackie Fletcher, TOP MIDDLE — Mike Moppert caught in mid-air, BOTTOM MIDDLE — Jim Hoffman, FAR RIGHT — Jeff Moppert. 7 T-MINUS 4 As the summer draws to an end, students look forward to school. They prepare for school in many ways. One way is to go out and buy new clothes and school supplies for the coming academic year. Many students go to the mall and other shopping centers to buy their clothes and supplies. Shown in the following pictures are some students shopping for clothes at the mall: CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT — Joe Grandinetti, Pat Carroll, Marjorie Morales, Cheryl Tanahatoe, Mary McCabe, Buddy Nese and Sharon Kersey. 8 T-MINUS 3 9 TMINUS 2 T-MINUS 7 The students who participate in the band throughout the year spend their last week of summer at school. During this week the band practices marching and drills. Band camp begins at 9:00 A.M. and students put in long hours with breaks for lunch and supper. The next set of pictures show some of the band members at band camp. TOP LEFT — Alex Rios, TOP RIGHT — Ann Marie VanOrden and Barbara Cloughley, ABOVE — Mike D’Agostino, LEFT — Debbie Casey. Section 2, Group 2 Champions On a cold breezy Saturday afternoon, the Dover Tigers won their first North Jersey Group 2 Section 2 state Championship in playoff history by defeating Warren Hills 26-17. The season started with a loss to Delbarton and two wins over Boonton and Mendham. Unbeaten Randolph, next on the list, came into Tiger Territory and pulled out a victory but didn’t impress anybody winning 20-18. This however was the turning point for the future state champs. Dover then shutdown powerful Morris Hills, destroyed Mount Olive, killed Hanover Park, and crushed Parsippany Hills securing a playoff spot. The first game of the playoffs was played in Dover. Roselle was embarrassed 50-20 and went home losers. This overpowering victory sent Dover flying into the State Championship round. Dover suffered a brief setback losing to West Morris which cost them a share of the conference title but came back strong for the State Championship game. December 1 proved to be the icing on the cake for the Tigers. A relentless defensive unit, an over-powering offensive unit, and a supreme coaching staff were the elements of victory. Newspapers all around the Morris area picked some of Dover’s outstanding players for all-star teams. Shawn Laverty, Jay Anderson, Joe Grandinetti, and Joe Quigley were picked by newspapers as some of the best players in the county. Coach Tardive deservingly won Coach of the Year. The season proved to be the best ever. Next year we’ll be hearing more from returning lettermen that include all county Rick Torres, outstanding lineman Tom Chirip (at left) and Craig McPeek, hard hitting defensive men Junior Gwaltney, Dave Alperti, Robert English, Brian Cullen, Bill Swayze, clutch receiver Anel Abreu and talented running back Keith Smith. The Tigers will miss seniors Ed Casey, Joe Dulio, John Fields, Sean Slattery, Steve Kerwick, Buddy Nese, and Tim Downs. (Related article and pictures on pages 120 and 121.) Hills 18 6 West Morris 6 wins. 2 losses Coach Hicok with coaches Brown and Frister led the Freshman team to a 6-2 record. The team had many quality players who contributed in this year’s season. Leading offensively was halfbacks, Dave Beadle and Dan Swayze, fullback, Henry Nieves, and starting quarterback Hector Mena. Defensively, the Tigers were led by Steve Malloy, Mark Meola, Jason Fairchild, Bruce Johnson, Joe Cayero, Walt Liles, Dave Fields, Tom McConnell and Beau Fucci. The final game of the season was definitely the most important. The whole team came together to beat a very strong West Morris team. Beau Fucci came back after being out with a broken finger and kicked a 27 yard field goal to ice the win. It was the first field goal ever kicked by the freshmen. The Freshman team had a tremendous amount of potential and is looking forward to a winning season next year on the junior varsity level and hopefully another state championship in ’87. These two players scored the most goals for the team; Eddie Lopez, 11 goals and Amos Ruiz, 10 goals. The team encountered some tough competition, five of their games went into overtime. There were six returning players from last year. Four of them were seniors: Cesar Coral, David Miller, Robert Waltz, and Dung Nguyen. The team ended its season with 5-10-1 record. Most of the games were decided by one goal. Coach Apicella expects to have a more competitive team next year with more returning underclassmen. Even with all the goals made by Sue Dallalah, the leading scorer, and all the opposing attempts Vickie Robinson stopped, the team could not get ahead. The most valuable players were Sue Dallalah and Cindy McConnell, and the most improved players were Colleen Flaherty and Colleen O’Rourke. The team’s schedule for the 1984 season included games against six of the top ten teams in the state. To make matters worse some of the key players were injured early in the season and desperately missed by the rest of the team. Despite the disappointing record the leadership and spirit of Barbara Cloughley, Vickie Robinson, and Carolyn Malloy kept the team’s hopes high throughout the entire season. Boys and Girls on the Run The Tiger cross-country team, which has been led, for eighteen years, by head coach Wayne Valentine, finished another successful season with a 6-5 overall record. A fifth place finish in the championship meet and a 4-4 conference dual meet record led them to finish fifth overall in the Hills Division of the Iron-Hills Conference. Highlights of the season came in Saturday meets where the Tigers seemed to excel. The Tigers placed third at the West Seneca Classic in New York, and their second place performance in the state sectionals enabled them to run and finish seventh in the State Group Championships. Leading the Tigers were senior Randy Valentine (Right), who was the top runner in most meets, junior Frank Moran, and sophomore Pilar Figueroa. Also helping the team were sophomore Wilfredo Salada and freshmen Gilbert Roman, Jason Palamountain and Bobby Patino. The Tigerettes finished their season on an optimistic note winning their final two meets to end with a 2-7 record. Tigerette success came on the road winning trophies by placing second at the Lake Forest Invitational in Delaware and third at the West Seneca Invitational in New York. The girls, coached by Steve Schiffman, finished sixth in both the Iron-Hills Conference meet and state sectionals and tenth in a tough Morris County meet. Sophomore Yolanda Santana (Middle) proved she is one of New Jersey’s best distance runners by winning the Dover Invitational Sophomore race, the Iron-Hills Conference, Hills Division meet and the West Seneca Classic. Other runners contributing to the improving team were senior Kathy MaguirefBoffom right), junior Trina Altman, sophomores Heather Welch and Cathy Magliocchetti and freshmen Stacy Reidinger, Diane Mendoza and Liz Ramos. Many of the team members had individual highs. Yolanda Santana won the Morris Catholic Championship. She was third at the West Point Invitational and the third fastest in the State this winter in the 3000. She holds the school record in the 3000 meter and the 2 mile run. Randy Valentine won the Virginia Tech 1500 meter and won the Morris Catholic 1000 yard run. He was third in the Morris Catholic mile. Frank Moran holds the school record in the 600 meter and the 300 meter. He was fourth in the Morris Catholic 600 meter and second in the Morris County 600 meter. They were very competitive with the various teams they played. Several of the teams’ losses were decided by four points or less. The Orange and Black was led in scoring by juniors, Ricky Hayes and Tom “Junior” Gwaltney. Jeff Fields was the rebounding force on the boards; Robert Soto and Captain John Fields contributed solidly with their defensive skills. Jim Hoffman, the sixth man, often came off the bench to spark the team with some quick offense and good defense. At one point during the season, the team won eight games in a row. During this stretch, the Tigers knocked off the second ranked team in the county, Mendham 50-44. The Varsity squad competed in the Morris County Tournament but lost a heartbreaker to Bayley Ellard in overtime, 54-48. The team entered the state play-offs. With a 57-34 defeat of Kenilworth, the team advanced to quarterfinals and upset the number three seed, 59-57, after Dover trailed by eleven points at half time. Their final record was 16-4. Coach Apicella felt that the most important event during this season was the game against Mt. Olive. Both of the teams had come into the game with a 13-3 record but the Tigers beat them in their own gym. The game against Parsippany Hills was won with five seconds left by George Soto's foul shot and the game against West Morris was won with one second left by Chris Welsch with two points. The stars of the team were Ken Maguire, Chris Welsch, George Rettas, Dave Soto, and George Soto but as a whole the team played very well. There were times when the team was behind six to eight points but they would struggle for a comeback to win. They had a lot of determination and played with confidence even though most of their opponents were much taller but they “out hustled them.” (J.V. scores on p. 156.) Standing: George Soto. Captain Kristen Gilbert reported, “This was one of my most enjoyable years with the team,” and that the upcoming J.V. and freshman players will contribute to a very promising future. There were three seniors on this year’s team: Kristen Gilbert, Sandy Lane, and Cyndi McConnell who all helped to contribute to the success of the Lady Tigers. During the season a new record was established by Trina Altman. The junior snatched a record 15 steals in a game against Morris Hills. Four weeks later another record was tied as junior Barbara Cloughley matched Sandra Clowney’s record of 21 rebounds in a single game set in 1983. Barbara tied this record in a home game against Mt. Olive which helped put a win in their book. Standing: Stephanie Williams, Barbara Cloughley, Sandy Lane. Kristen Gilbert. Coach Kaplan. Kneeling: Cyndi McConnell. Cathy Harris. Trina Altman. Varsity assistance came from Stephanie Williams and Cynthia McConnell. This team was an exciting team with a running type of basketball and a full court pressure defense. During foul shots members of the team would take turns going to tho sideline to receive a cup of water from Coach Micak. Many adjectives can describe this team — hustle, aggressive, determined, hard working, exciting, and fun. Including the intelligence and skills of this team, they were able to change “D” on the run and also pick up new plays instantly. Games were exciting and thrilling to the end, warming the fans up for the varsity action. This was truly a team effort season. The team placed 2nd in their own Christmas Tournament. This was only the second time in nineteen years that Dover had managed to accomplish this feat. After an opening match loss to Lenape Valley, one of the two undefeated teams in the area, the determined Tigers then won seven of their next eight meets. The culmination of their dual meet season was an exciting 26-25 win over conference cochampion West Morris. This was the Tigers proof to their power in the Hills conference even though they failed to make the state sectionals for the first time since the team playoff format was devised. Dover placed seven wrestlers in their own district championships which enabled the Tigers to tie West Morris for the District XV team title, when most area sports writers had picked the Tigers to finish no higher than third. These seven wrestlers (pictured on p. 172) advanced to the Region IV Tournament held at Walkill Valley H.S. where Wayne Stevenson, Robert English and Joe Quigley placed third. The J.V. team was also very successful compiling a 10-4 record. The future looks bright as the J.V. team at times had eight freshmen in their line-up. Outstanding wrestlers on the team were Henry Nieves, 11-3, Mickey Soto, 13-1. (All records and scores on p. 172). Kneeling: Manager Melvin Burgette, Steve Puchalski, Don Davis, Dave Clowney. There were many things to remember about 1984. Mrs. Mondale visited Dover High School on her husband’s campaign for the presidency of the United States. America saw its first woman Vice-President nominee this past year, when Walter Mondale selected Mrs. Geraldine Ferraro as his running mate. After a long campaign, President Reagon won a landslide re-election victory over the Democratic team of Mondale Ferraro. During 1984, renovation work had begun on the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor. The work on the monument was anticipated to be finished by 1986 for her 100th anniversary. 1984 was also an exciting year in sports. American athletes dominated the 1984 Winter Olympics, winning most of the medals. The American Gymnastics team did exceptionally well in the Olympics. Mary Lou Retton was one of the stars of the Olympics by winning a gold medal in the women’s gymnastics. The Detroit Tigers won the 1984 World Series over a very tough San Diego Padres team. On the football scene, the San Francisco 49’ers defeated the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XIX, despite Dan Marino’s record setting year as the new Miami quarterback. English actor Richard Burton passed away in 1984. Also Clarence Ducky” Nash, Donald Duck's voice, passed away. Some of the box office hits of 1984 were: Ghost Busters”, Beverly Hills Cop”, Red Dawn”, Terminator”, Karate Kid” and Breakfast Club”. Popular groups and their hit albums of 1984 were: Bruce Springsteen — Born In The U.S.A.”, Huey Lewis and the News — Sports”, Madonna — Madonna”, Cyndi Lauper — Girls Just. Want To Have Fun” and Prince — Purple Rain”. Julio Iglesias an internationally famous singer had finally become prominent in the American music scene. In order to attend Vo-Tech, a student must either be a junior or a senior and must also be passing their school subjects. The students at Dover High School have been enrolled in this program ever since the school has started. They spend half a day at Dover High taking major subjects such as English, history, phys. ed.. math and science. After this they are transported to Vo-Tech, which is provided by the Board of Education. There they learn skills such as auto mechanics, child related careers, computers, construction, electrical trades, culinary arts, landscaping, electronics, plumbing and others. Some programs are taught in one year and others in two years. On completion of a program, the student receives a certificate. The one biggest advantage is that the student is now trained for entry level jobs. 129 Dimensions ’84 — Junior W nners Fantasy 1st Tina Beradino Formal 1st Noemi Santana 2nd Diane Acevedo 2nd Carmen Traverso 3rd Claudia Correa 3rd Theresa Sarno Casual 1st 2nd 3rd Claudia Correa Mattie Moss Stella Trainello 130 16th Annual Hair Show CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT — Lisa D'Andrea; Liz Lancaster and Elba Cruz; Kristen Gilbert and Sharon Dietz; the Judging; the Mad Rush; Marcelle Brown and Lisa Lehman; Kristen Franklin and Sandi Gibson. 131 Aides at Work This group of students used their study halls to help out the school officials. One of the class projects was to be a parent to an egg for a whole week. The students had to pick out of a box to see if their baby would be a girl, a boy, or twins. The object of this was to show how much responsibility becoming a parent can be. There is also a Psychology Club. The club has sold memo boards for fund raising and has taken a trip to Green Wilderness on November 28. This program is sponsored by the N.J. Department of Correction for Juvenile Delinquents. The students who went here assimilated the physical activities that the kids go through. These activities help the kids to realize their self image. D.H.S. Band—More Than a Class The 1984-1985 Dover High School band had approximately seventy members including the colorguard and band members. They performed in parades, the Herald News Band Festival and competed in the Montville Band Competition where the band placed third. In order to be ready for these performances they held 6:30 a.m. practices several mornings during the fall and early spring. The band also met and practiced as a regular class. Every year band members plan for a weekend trip. Last year the band traveled to Toronto, Canada for four days. This year they participated in the Colonial Music Festival in Williamsburg, Pennsylvania from May 17-21. To help defray the cost of this trip, band members sold boxed candies, sausage and cheese, and had a twenty-four hour playathon during the Easter vacation. The officers of this year’s band are Mike D'Agostino — President, Melvin Burgette — Vice President, Patty Misyak — Secretary, and Jackie Alvarado — Treasurer. The drum majors are Jackie Alvarado and Ian Rubenstein. According to Mr. Zatorski, the band is considered a “young but upcoming group. They also have a lot of potential.” 143 Happiness, Singing to Others CLOCKWISE FROM TOP CENTER — Theresa Vasquez. They met in two separate groups, one during 5E and the other during 6E. This was Miss Kwiatkowski’s third year of teaching the class at Dover. On December 10, the choir had their annual Christmas concert at the mall. During the Christmas season they also sang at the Dover Christian Nursing Home and the tree lighting ceremonies. The Choir went to the Senior Citizens Nutrition Center and appeared at the Dover Day celebration. This past year the Choir and Band joined together to form the Pop Group. This group appeared in two of this year’s pep rallies. They sang such hits as the theme from “Ghost Busters’’ and I’m So Excited”. It went over great with the student body. Brain Teasers The 1985 Math Team consisted of twenty-five students who participated in six contests throughout the year. The contests were made up of six questions from various topics in geometry and algebra. The test was held once a month, on Tuesdays during 8th period, beginning in October and ending in April. In 1984, Mike Brinck had the second highest overall score while Dan Crnarich placed third. Carl Peterson was the leading sophomore a year ago with Jay McCahill a close second. With these four returning, new team members from the Class of ’87 such as Sherwin James and Grisel Martinez, and many freshmen from the honors geometry class, the team hoped to improve on their ranking of 7th place in Morris County and team score of 127. Last year’s team also had the honor of placing first in Morris County for the 4th contest. In the past only students in the honors math program participated, but any student may join the Math Team. The following students participated regularly in this year’s math contests: Seniors — Joe Blahovec, Mike Brinck, Dan Crnarich; Juniors — Don Davis, Carl Peterson, Du Pham, Jay McCahill, David Alperti; Sophomores — Conney Berger, Ben Caro, Sherwin James, Grisel Martinez, Chris Welsch; Freshmen — Joe Carroll, Ken Cenicola, Randy Davis, Jason Fabozzi, David Fields, Jay Jardine, Alexandra Marquez, Evonne Olano, Chris Peer, Jessica Sisto, Adam Villamarin, Lara Loory. Now it also includes the school newspaper. The paper’s name had been changed from Student Prints to Tiger Tales. Mr. Mark McGarrity who has joined the D.H.S. faculty as a Writer-in-Residence, has helped Mr. Valentine and Mrs. Evans to advise the club. This program to employ our Writer-in-Residence was funded by the Geraldine Dodge Foundation and the Dover Board of Education. Some of the senior stand workers were Tim Downs, Naomi Grimes, Steve Kerwick, and Kelly O'Leary. During the past year the club traveled to Maine for a short student exchange in the spring. In return students from Maine visited Dover High. For the first time in many years Dover High did not host an exchange student from another country. We did sponsor Lucia Bennett, a sophomore, to go and study in Malayasia from March 1, 1985, until March 1986. The Peer Counselors are a group of about 30 students from each grade that are trained to work with fifth graders from the elementary schools. After training has taken place the peer counselors visit the fifth grade classrooms and become acquainted with each student. In this way, the counselors hope to help the students with any kind of problem ranging from school to homelife. Basically the counselors try to help them with peer pressure and keep them away from drugs and alcohol. Every year freshmen are trained to become counselors at a retreat. This past year the freshmen retreat was held at the West Morris Y.M.C.A. on January 11 and 12, 1985. During these two days many activities were performed. Guest speakers talked about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Then during the 1984-85 year the peer counselors visited the fifth grades quite frequently to try helping the younger students. 149 A Diversity of Activities French Spanish Clubs and Jerseymen The main object of the French and Spanish Club is to get the student to experience the culture of the language they are studying. To accomplish this, the clubs travel to New York City for the day to see a Broadway show in May. Before the show they stop at a French (for French students) and Spanish (for Spanish students) restaurant. There they experience the food, how to order in that language and the people of that nationality because most of these places are owned by French or Spanish people. To help pay for these costs, the clubs sold calendars in November and carnations in January. It was a learning experience for the students. The Jerseymen is a club for students who are interested in the history of Dover and New Jersey. This year they had filmed a fifteen minute video of Blackwell Street. They filmed it from the Presbyterian Church to the Methodist Church and narrated from the information that they had researched the previous year. Before this project they had “adopt a building’’ which meant they researched everything about the building. They had researched the Stone Academy and the Train Station. Six starters graduated in ’83 to leave the team with only four seniors, who had limited varsity playing time. In the early part of the season the team lost four out of five games by a total of six runs. These games were played in weather non-conducive to baseball. The pitching, hitting, and defense all had to work together to win and that did not happen. One less error or hit could have turned the games around. The pitching staff was led by underclassmen Ed Casey, the only pitcher on the mound before this year. After a losing start, Coach Riley used more and more underclassmen in key roles. He did this to give them experience for the ’85 season. The varsity team ended its ’84 season with a 3-16-1 record. The J.V. team had a more successful season that ended with an 8-12 record. Coach Riley and his team are looking forward to a successful ’85 season. 162 CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT — Joe Grandinetti waits for the throw from the pitcher. Jim Olano pitches the ball. The varsity softball team is coming off a successful 13-7 season, although the team did not win the conference championship as anticipated. Last year’s leading batter, Kathy Maguire, and best outfielder, Don-nese Cheatham, will be among the returning seniors. With the graduation of Morris County’s top pitcher, Margie Corby, Coach Kaplan will have a difficult time finding a replacement. The team showed great improvement as the ’84 season progressed. Expectations are high for the ’85 season as the Lady Tigers take the field.
