... Rt LUarh New technological advances have simplified the jobs of many workers in the public service industries. Cash registers for example, started out with the operator having to compute the change. Advances led to electronic registers which printed the amount of change. The latest in modern technology has produced a cash register which prints the customer's order, computes the price and then sends the order to a printer in the food preparation area. International Business Machines Corporation is helping consumers get through the check-out line at supermarkets more quickly, by means of holography, the technique of producing three dimensional images using lasers. The three dimensional image locates the universal bar code on the product and registers the price automatically on the cash register screen. This cuts down on time and increases efficiency of the cashiers. Technology has also reached the gasoline industry. New digital read-out gasoline pumps can now be seen in many gas stations. These pumps provide quicker dispen-sion and more accurate readings of gasoline flow. Robert Baun and Vickie Durdunas find checking out easier with the use of the Holograph System 5

... Rt Play Micro-computer chips are not only in machines with names such as Apple, Commodore, and Radio Shack. They are also in machines having familiar names as Pac-Man, Centipede, and Donkey-Kong. The quote all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy is certainly true, and millions of people find recreation in video games. Many people identify computers with stodgy office buildings and scientific laboratories, but in reality video games are simplified high-tech computers. They provide hours of fun for countless numbers of kids who don't mind depositing their quarters, game after game However, you don't have to save up your quarters to swamp your mind with laser blasts and time warps You can easily buy home video machines such as Atari and Intellivision, hook them to your television, and play for hours Hundreds of thousands of these games are sold each year with new game cartridges coming out every 2-3 months. Don’t get the wrong idea though, because even this method is not cheap. Game cartridges cost approximately $30, and the game itself can range from about $95-295 So the next time someone accuses you of not keeping up with the latest advances in computer technology, go play a video game.
