ROB ' ... Rt LUarh New technological advances have simplified the jobs of many workers in the public service industries. Cash registers for example, started out with the operator having to compute the change. Advances led to electronic registers which printed the amount of change. The latest in modern technology has produced a cash register which prints the customer's order, computes the price and then sends the order to a printer in the food preparation area. International Business Machines Corporation is helping consumers get through the check-out line at supermarkets more quickly, by means of holography, the technique of producing three dimensional images using lasers. The three dimensional image locates the universal bar code on the product and registers the price automatically on the cash register screen. This cuts down on time and increases efficiency of the cashiers. Technology has also reached the gasoline industry. New digital read-out gasoline pumps can now be seen in many gas stations. These pumps provide quicker dispen-sion and more accurate readings of gasoline flow. Rt Play Micro-computer chips are not only in machines with names such as Apple, Commodore, and Radio Shack. They are also in machines having familiar names as Pac-Man, Centipede, and Donkey-Kong. The quote all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy is certainly true, and millions of people find recreation in video games. Many people identify computers with stodgy office buildings and scientific laboratories, but in reality video games are simplified high-tech computers. They provide hours of fun for countless numbers of kids who don't mind depositing their quarters, game after game However, you don't have to save up your quarters to swamp your mind with laser blasts and time warps You can easily buy home video machines such as Atari and Intellivision, hook them to your television, and play for hours Hundreds of thousands of these games are sold each year with new game cartridges coming out every 2-3 months. Don’t get the wrong idea though, because even this method is not cheap. Game cartridges cost approximately $30, and the game itself can range from about $95-295 So the next time someone accuses you of not keeping up with the latest advances in computer technology, go play a video game. Computers are the answer for this need. Our generation will be in the thick of this computer age and computer literacy will be of the utmost importance. Dover High School is helping its students achieve this literacy with new courses such as Introduction to Microcomputers and Computer Programming in the BASIC language. The term BASIC stands for Beginners All Purpose Symbolic Instructional Code. Other courses also have advanced technological equipment. Advances in office machines and automotive repair have been introduced into the DHS curriculum. Students working on these machines will have a definite advantage when going out in the business world. The Fighting fTlen of thE Gridiron 50 This year's Dover Tiger football squad had its share of defeat and glory in almost equal proportions. Their season started with a 7-6 loss to Delbarton. Fumbles were the key to a game which could have been easily won. The Tigers, however, got back on track the next week with a convincing win over Mt. Olive. Signs of offensive strength started to show as senior running back Darryl Dunn and junior Jay Anderson sliced through opposing secondaries with relative ease. Week number three put the Tigers against defending state champion West Morris. The West Morris team threw Dover for a painful 39-14 loss. Memories of losses 2 years in a row to an unworthy Mountain team were on the minds of the Tigers as they prepared for the opening kick-off at Hamilton field. They encountered little trouble and defeated Mountain 6-0. This leads us to Dover's most impressive game, a game which was won by one of the best defensive shows in the area. Parsippany Hills, undefeated and ranked 20 in the state, was upset 8-6 at Parsippany as the Tigers showed they were a team to be reckoned with. The winning ways continued as Hanover Park came to Dover with a band that was more impressive than the football players themselves. They were ousted 14-6. The next game produced a high degree of optimism as the players prepared for the Boonton Bombers, a team which was unbeaten in the IHC. A fake punt caught the Tigers off guard producing a 12-6 loss. Facing their third undefeated opponent of the season proved too much for the Tigers as they battled the Randolph Rams in an annual rivalry. Dover looked impressive on their first drive but could not score and from there on it wasn't much of a battle with Randolph coming up with a 21-8 victory. The team accomplished quite a bit this year and proved the theory that defense is the key to any victory. We congratulate the coaches and the entire varsity team. LnpEZ, Rial, SilvEira Star The Dover High School Varsity Soccer Team, spurred on by new head coach, Mr. Ostroski, the team's leading scorer, Alfonso Lopez and defensive players, jorge Silveira and joe Rial, gave Dover High its first winning season ever, 9-8-1. In turn, Dover's Soccer Team received the recognition it so genuinely deserved. The team got off to a slow start because they began in October with a new head coach. The team's previous coach, Mr. Abruscato, left Dover suddenly to accept a new position. At first the players were not accustomed to the change, but within four games they regained their perspective and did what was expected of them. They beat the teams they were expected to and in the process gave the state teams a good fight. They redeemed themselves by defeating Boonton and Mt. Olive, two teams that had beaten them earlier in the season, and by defeating the Hanover Park Hornets, a task which they had never accomplished in the history of Dover High. They defeated the Hornets, not only once, but twice. The team soon gained entry to the Morris County Tournament only to lose by a single goal to the eventual winner, Chatham Township. Hopefully a winning tradition has been started in the soccer program and will continue in the years to come. 55 Pasquale Feola Victor Ruiz Alfonzo Lopez, the leading scorer for Dover, runs for a goal. The highlights of the season came in the state championships. The Tigers won the North jersey Section 2, Croup II race for the fifth time in eight years with 50 points. The next week they qualified for the Meet of Champions by placing third for the second straight season in the Croup II championships with 175 points. Individually, the top trio of David Creenblatt, Mike Sweeney and Randy Valentine were among the top runners in the state. David Creenblatt, a sophomore, placed sixth in the Croup II meet after winning the state sectionals. Senior Co-captain Mike Sweeney was second in the sectionals after setting course records at West Morris and Parsippany Hills. He was also the leading Tiger throughout the early season, junior Randy Valentine set a Dover record at the Lake Forest Invitational and shared dual meet honors in a number of the early meets with Greenblatt and Sweeney. Sophomore Frank Moran and freshman Pilar Figueroa helped make the Tigers one of Morris County's best teams. Mark McKnight, co-captain, gave the Tigers insurance as did the rest of the team members, Ron Davidovich, David Huron and Eric Fritch. The Tigers compiled a dual meet record of 8-2, which included an IHC mark of 6-2, good enough to help the Tigers finish third in the Hills Division. They were also third in the IHC championship meet with 69 points and sixth in the Morris County Championships with 155 points. The team took the third place trophy at the West Seneca Classic in upstate New York and lost a tiebreaker for third place at the Lake Forest Invitational in Delaware as they scored 106 points. The Tiger dual meet victories came over IHC foes Boon-ton, Parsippany Hills, Mount Olive, Hanover Park, Mountain and West Morris. The losses were a disappointing one-pointer to Morris Hills and Randolph. 62 Senior Co-captain Mike Sweeney Senior Co-captain Mark McKnight 63 Junior Randy Valentine Assistant Coach Carl Panetta 64 T i g E r P r i d E First Row: Cathy Magliocchetti, Yolanda Santana, Tara Barth Second Row: Trina Altman, Sandy Lane, Kathy Maguire and Coach Schiffman The term, Tiger pride, was personified by this year's Dover High School girls' cross country team. The small but dedicated group of runners, coached by Steve Schiffman, fought the odds and finally came up with a victory in the last dual meet of the season. With only six girls finishing the season and needing at least five girls to score in any meet, the Tigerettes were forced to make sacrifices to field a team. Despite a 1-8 final record, the Tigerettes managed to run well in the Saturday meets. The highlight of the season came at the Lake Forest Invitational in Delaware early in the season when the Tigerettes won the first trophy in their history when they took third with 84 points. At the West Seneca Invitational in upstate New York, the Tigerettes placed eighth but narrowly missed another trophy. The dual meet victory came over Mountain, 21-34, led by freshman Yolanda Santana, who was the top Tigerette for most of the season. The other scorers in that race were sophomore Trina Altman, freshman Tara Barth, junior Kathy Maguire and junior Sandy Lane Lending moral support was sophomore Cathy Magliocchetti, who was on the sidelines with a leg injury for the final three weeks of the season. The Tigerettes placed seventh in the Iron Hills Conference final standings and in the championship meet. They were eighth in the state sectionals. Coach Schiffman chose to run Yolanda Santana and Tara Barth in the freshman division of the Morris County meet and the girls responded in fine fashion. Reggie Thomas, Steve Puchalski, Mark McKnight, Don Davis. Robert English, Joe Waskas, Mike Brinck The Dover Tigers got off to a slow start with a record of 1-2-1. The reason for this was that many of the wrestlers that started for the Tigers were very young and inexperienced on the varsity level. A serious injury to a returning varsity starter, Randy Panick, sidelined him for the entire season. As the season progressed the team's young members quickly gained the confidence they needed to wrestle at a competitive level with other schools. This maturity resulted in many victories which included an upset victory over undefeated Hanover Park. The team has done a better job than expected, because of the team's overall effort and the spectacular individual efforts by the team's top nine wrestlers. Leading the team with victories was Tom Brinck with a record of 19-2. Tom did not win the Christmas Tournament, but avenged his loss there to Bill Young in the dual meet victory over Morris Hills. Other individual standouts were. Christmas Tournament Champ Wayne Stevenson, only the second sophomore in Dover's history to win at their own tournament, the middle weight wrestlers of Scott McDougall, Steve Harris and joe Quigley and other wrestlers Don Davis, Dave Clowny, Robert English, Steve Hutchinson and senior Reggie Thomas. At the Top of the East Tournament, Tom Brinck took first place and Robert English, Scott McDougall, Joe Quigley and Steve Hutchin- son finished second. On the JV level at this same tournament, the champions included four Dover wrestlers — Dave Schainen, Keith Smith, Joaquin Negron and Angel Mendoza. Louis Cyarmati and Ignacio Rodriguez won championships at the Roxbury Novice Tournament. The team eventually finished the regular season with a 9-4-1 record. The dramatic victories in the final week over Randolph and Mendham resulted in Dover's selection to the Group II Section 2 State Play-offs. Dover has participated all 5 years in the state play-offs since they were instituted. The JV team posted an impressive record of 13-1, losing only to Parsippany Hills. Even though their overall record (8-12) does not show a winning season, they were very competitive with the various teams they played. Several of their losses were decided by 5 points or less. The leading scorer for the Tigers was senior guard Luis Negron. Other outstanding senior players included: Kevin Simmons, Chris Northan and Otis Braswell. The jV Team and the Freshman Team enjoyed very successful seasons and the JV Team as well as the Varsity Team was selected to participate in the Morris County Basketball Tournament. Even though the Varsity Team lost in the first round, the JV Team was more successful. At the time of printing, the JV Team had made their way into the semi-final round with a 50-46 upset of 3rd seeded Mendham. Tennis is enjoying increased enthusiasm across America and the boys at Dover High School have decided to jump on the band wagon. Once called the Sport of Kings, tennis playing has once again become very popular. Twenty boys make up the 1984 D.H.S. team, a number which has not been equalled in years. Under second-year coach, Roger Kindel, the boys hope to play each match with veracity befitting any Tiger athlete. Returning lettermen Co-Captains jay Kshatri and Victor Ruiz will lead the Tigers at first and second singles, respectively. They will round off the team with John Vega at third singles followed by a strong first doubles team of Hugo Villamar and Jorge Villabon. The finishing touch will be a powerful second doubles team of first year players Miguel Aguilar and Eddie Lopez. The Tigers take their tennis seriously but enjoy it as well. They are not predicting an undefeated season by any means, but do expect to win a number of matches during the course of the 1984 season. As one player put it, Randolph doesn't have anything to worry about, but if we get the chance, we're going to be real tough to beat. Coach Riley hopes to be able to improve on last year's 9-11 record. Seniors on the team are Doug Sliker, Tyrone Parker, Ben Gilbert, Matt Shubilla, Joe Waskas and Al Miller. To be able to improve on last year's mark, the underclassmen on the team will have to help out. junior Ed Casey hopes to have another good season as a pitcher and infielder when he batted .300 last year. Other juniors to watch are Mike Brinck and Julio Soto. Sophomores that moved to the varsity team along with Coach Riley are Ricky Torres, Craig McPeek and Anthony Smith. We want to be at least .500 and play a spoiler for the big teams in the league. For us to do that, our pitching has to work, said Coach Riley in surveying the competition in the Iron Hills Conference-Hills Division. They are looking to take four titles: the conference, the county, the sectional, and the state. They stand a good chance of doing this as they have a great deal going for them. Eight of the varsity players were members of the 1982 IHC Championship Team. They have skill, experience, some of the best pitching in the state, and strong competition for positions. Dawn Alperti, Diane Brennan, Kathy Maguire, Donnese Cheatham, and Sue Dallalah are vying for the three outfield positions. The four infielders will be selected from among Anne Kernor, Trina Altman, Colleen Flaherty, Cindy McConnell, Kristen Gilbert, and Vickie Robinson. The pitching staff consists of all area and all state senior Margie Corby, sophomore Ann Marie Van Orden, and junior Trade Shields. Val Germ and Denise Casey will be behind the plate. The girls are working hard to overcome several setbacks. One being the weather, which has allowed them limited practice time on the field. The other was a personal one. Margie Corby, who had injured her knee during basketball, has been attending therapy faithfully and her dedication gives one a sense of pride and strength. The Dover Tigers' outlook for the 1984 Spring Track Season appears to be a very promising one. In the eyes of the athletes and coaches, it is a time to duplicate the performances of the past years. For those who have already been involved in track, it is simply a time to better improve what they have already accomplished; but for the newcomers, it is a time to display to all their potential as track athletes. This season approximately ten seniors will be returning, and the coaches are looking forward to their performancs as being the nucleus” of the entire team, which is what is usually expected of them. The coaches hope that the performances of some of the underclassmen prove to be helpful and that they surpass their usual expectations. Over all, there are approximately 30 to 35 students participating in this year's Spring Track. The two events in which the coaches desire to be more successful are the Middle Distance Events and the Speed Events. Both these events have given the track team trouble, and they are hopeful that the performances of this season's athletes will change all of that. The students who will be participating in these events are seniors John Van Ry, Mike Sweeney, Robert Horvath, and junior Randy Valentine. Although these events have given them trouble in the past, their biggest problem is the number of injuries, especially the ones inflicted upon their top athletes. Scott McDougall is one who has been out because of injuries. The coaches hope for his return. Scott and junior joe Cegelka are the individuals who will be participating in the Pole Vaulting Events. This season Dover will be taking part in a tough conference. Compared to other schools,” says Coach Gallo, it will be difficult.” Although the competition seems grimacing, the coaches, players, and students of Dover High School look toward the track team's coming meets as triumphant ones. Only sophomore Barbara Cloughley, an all-around thrower who is especially talented in the shot put and discus throw, had any spring track experience. The Tigerettes also had their smallest squad ever with less than 10 athletes to cover 14 events. Among the most talented newcomers was freshman Yolanda Santana, a distance runner and high jumper. Another freshman who helped the Tigerettes was Cathy Magliocchetti, last year's junior school shot put champion. This year, she backed up Barbara Cloughley in the throwing events. Junior Sharon Dietz, who did compete in two meets last year before being sidelined by a foot injury, was the team's leading sprinter running the 100, 200, and 400 and helping out in the jumping events. Another junior, Sandy Lane, took over the hurdling chores which she handled admirably despite a lack of experience. Sophomore Michelle Anderson was the team's other sprinter. With no seniors on the squad, building experience for the future seasons was another goal for the team. Head coach Wayne Valentine, the only coach to hold that position with the Tigerettes, was helped by coaches Gallo, Beliveau and Cagnassola. The former club consists of students who have been involved with running sports. This is a club in which the runners can socialize and take extracurricular trips. The club was organized in 1966 when a group of runners wanted to get recognition after winning a conference championship. The ski club is another social group which has no requirements in order to join. They take ski trips to local resorts such as Hidden Valley, Vernon Valley, and Great Gorge. Ill Chinese Auction The Senior class held a Chinese Auction on Nov. 17, 1983. The students on the committee worked long hours collecting contributions donated by local establishments and senior parents. Free pizzas, perfume, rugs, hair cuts, and craft items were among the lesser prizes. Larger ones were a turkey dinner, a free prom bid, and a free yearbook. The door prize was a $20 gift certificate to the GAP. The class ended the night with an overall profit of approximately $800. Every other year the Senior Girls were favored and were expected to come out the victors, but that did not happen this year. The moral victory belonged to the junior Girls who, although scoreless themselves, held back the Senior Girls and left them scoreless also. A 0-0 tie was the result. Junior success came from runs by Donnese Cheatham and turnovers, which were brought about by interceptions by Kristin Gilbert, Donnese Cheatham and Sharon Dietz. The Senior Girls put up a tremendous fight with gallant efforts by the team's quarterback, Margie Corby, who connected with the receiver Cheryl Brady for long yardage gainers, and by their entire offensive line. Also contributing to much of the Juniors' frustrations were Valerie Germ, who sacked and blocked many of the Junior plays, and Dawn Alperti, who intercepted passes that further plagued the Juniors' offensive line. Lieber Dover, These past five weeks have been fantastic. We are now on our return flight home from the 1983 GAPP exchange with the Gutenberg Schule in Wiesbaden, West Germany. We arrived on Fri. June 10, 1983 at Frankfurt airport. We were met by our German families and taken to our individual homes. Our days have been spent shopping on the Fussgang, taking day trips to local cities, visiting nearby countries, attending school, and going out with our friends. Some of the day trips included visits to Mainz, Rudesheim, and Bonn, the capital of W. Germany. One trip didn't involve stopping in a particular city. This was when the Pioneers of the German Army took us for a ride on the Rhine River. We took two major trips. One was a four day journey to Berlin. Berlin was a learning experience for all. We saw the Wall, remnants of W.W. II, and walked into Communist East Berlin. We also had fun at the beer festival, the nude beach, and walking on the Kurfurstandam. Our other trip was traveling through Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. We stayed in Markdorf, Germany by the Bodensee. We had a tour of Insel Mainau, a snowball fight in the Austrian Alps, and took a cable car to the top of Santis mountain in the Swiss Alps. On our way back to Frankfurt we traveled through the Black Forest. Our last night was spent in a castle outside of Frankfurt. We are all sorry to leave. We have learned so much, made lifelong friends, and even improved our German. Several of us are planning to go back as soon as possible. Dover High School Grace St Dover, N.J. 07801 U.S.A. Art is the outlet of the soul and to be proficient at it requires the utmost skill and dedication from its creators. The true artist is the one who can express his feelings in more than one form. He must be able to sense the delicacies around him and convey them to paper, wood, or canvas. We, at Dover High School, have two of these special people as classmates. Barbara Chewey and Gerardo Cuon have proven themselves to have the capacity to provide visual pleasure for the viewers of their artwork. Barbara and Gerardo were voted most artistic by the class of 1984, and they both have contributed much of their time to paint the various athletic activities in which the students of Dover High participate. Sports - ranging from baseball, to wrestling, to football, to soccer, and all the others - are represented on the walls of the hallway leading to the gymnasium. The paintings, while decorating the hallway, also provide a sense of pride for the students and encourage them to participate in or support these various activities. Art, however, is not the main interest for a future career for both of these talented students. In fact, their career choices are the very opposite of the sensitive world of art - the factual world of science. Barbara plans to pursue an engineering career, while Gerardo desires to study computer science. This may seem strange to some people, but actually it is a very wise career move, job prospects in art are not abundant, and the wages are not very appealing as well. However, art will remain a vital part of both of these students' lives; for as mentioned earlier, art is the outlet of the soul. flnniE CnmEs to □□VEr High Director - E. Daniels Music - j. A popular student event in the past, this year proved to be no exception. This year the teams were divided into two divisions. In Division I, the team of Tom Neesham, Tom Seretis, and John Phelps routed every opponent on the way to an amazing regular season record of 58-2; but in the play-off finals, they were beaten by the team of Dean Wardlow, joe Cegelka and Chris Schmidt for the Division I Championship. High average bowlers were John Phelps - 167 and Marcy Brown — 119. The high games were bowled by Victor Ruiz - 230, and Lisa Lehman - 153. In Division II, the team of Jorge Villabon, Ceir Coral and Rugel Chiriboga led during most of the season and became the first team in DIA history to also win the division championships. The second place team was Dawn Alperti, Stacey Acevedo, and Pam Rogalsky. The high averages were by Tyrone Parker - 144 and Dawn Alperti - 124, while the high games were bowled by Manny Sampeiro - 199 and Tanya Jones - 198. 128 Seniors This year's officers are Michelle Palmieri, Lisa Rogalsky, Shirley Bruen, and Irma Cavilanes. Michelle has been the president for the past three years. The others are all new. They have worked hard to raise money this year so that the class of '84 could have a prom. A Chinese Auction was held in November and was the main fund raiser of the year. In past years the class has sold candy, posters, and calendars. The Chinese Auction raised over $800. The class also sold flowers for Christmas and several other occasions. In February there was a Mr. Dover Day. On this day, girls purchased a ribbon to place on their favorite guy. At the end of the day the guy with the most ribbons was crowned. The Yearbook Staff would like to say congratulations to the officers for a job well done. Here I was in Dover where nobody knew either me or my country, Turkey, which was partly the reason why I was here. It was such a strange feeling to be in a totally different society, where a totally different language is being spoken and where they have different traditions and customs - a new culture. At first, I had some hard times, of course, as all of us did, but there was always a perfect family, the Ander-sons, behind me through those times. I will always remember the kindness, patience and the tolerance they had. I have had such wonderful friends here that I have never felt alone. Friends that care about me, friends that I love and respect. Dover High is very different from my school. I am really impressed by the friendships between the teachers and the students and the great opportunities they are offered. This year is probably the most interesting and exciting year in my life. I will never forget the great city, New York. I thank everybody who helped me through this year: the AFS Club, all the wonderful people involved in AFS (E.D.) and all my friends. We AFS students have the best and the worst of times but, we always remember the good parts after all. Being here in the U.S.A. always made me very happy. Knowing that I won't be able to see any of my friends after I leave this country is such a sad feeling. Life is full of surprises and no one must be afraid of meeting new people and experiencing a new culture. Although it is not very easy, it helps us to know ourselves and our own culture better. We had just said good-bye to long-term advisor, Mrs. Linda Reiners, who left to have her baby, Nicole Margaret, and welcomed in our inexperienced but extremely intelligent new advisor, Mr. Raymond T. Snyder. Mr. Snyder also took over the financial end of the yearbook from Mr. Fredriks. However, inexperience was not limited to Mr. Snyder; the majority of the yearbook staff was new to the art of yearbook production. Despite these obstacles, the '84 Tiger is proving to be one of the better yearbooks to be published for Dover High School. More ads were sold this year than in any recent year, more free yearbooks were earned by students selling boosters, and the staff met every deadline which is something that previous yearbook staffs had failed to do. Many long hours were spent by staff members and Mr. Snyder to create a book that would provide timeless memories to everyone who would read it. We would like to thank the people who contributed their valuable time and effort: George Franklin and his wife, Chris, our publisher representatives; Todd Tuttle, Michelle Anderson, and Tony Hein for inputing booster data into the yearbook computer; Mr. Gustafson for allowing us to share his most spacious office; all the teachers whose classes we and other staff members missed; and finally, the entire 1984 Tiger Yearbook Staff and our new advisor Mr. Raymond T. Snyder. Thanks for everything and may your memories be as wonderful as ours. Dawn Alperti jay Kshatri Co-Editors-in-Chief Colophon Printed by Taylor Publishing Company of Dallas, Texas.
