Laurie Nicholas Americans Abroad to Germany Laurie Nicholas This past summer was a totally unique experience for me. I received an American Field Service Scholarship and was sent to Germany to live for a short time. I had the best two months of my life, and 1 cannot begin to explain how much I learned about myself, other people, my country, Germany, and different cultures. During my summer abroad, I lived with two host families to whom I grew very close. During July, I lived with a family of five near the French border in Southwest Germany, and I spent the month of August living with a family of four in North Central Germany. I will cherish my times in Germany forever. Although Germany is a part of the Western culture, there were quite a few differences I had to adjust to. For instance, the language of which I knew little, the punctual and strict time principles, the worrying about my host families' approval of my actions, and the new school system that I attended for a few weeks. Traveling from family to family and area to area, I have found that people are quite the same all over. I was as different from my German sister as I am from my U.S. next door neighbor. Anyone can learn what I did on my two month stay on a short trip. All one must do is take time out to sit and relax, and take in the new atmosphere. Don't be so rushed to see all the common sights, but rather talk to the people and watch their actions — you'll learn much more! Experience people — learn to understand and believe in them! Maria Rodrigues Winter Program from Brazil Maria Rodrigues Six months ago, I could not say what I am feeling now because I did not know any English. I came to Dover, and since the first day I came here, I have been helped from everybody. I quickly adjusted to American life and to the new language. Dover High has been part of my life and so has my American family and my friends here. The new culture opened my eyes to new horizons and ways of life. I am sure that this experience in Dover High and with Dover friends did and does give me so much, that this year will be unforgettable, and I will never leave here because a piece of my life has been spent in Dover. When I go back to my country, this experience will be alive in my heart, helping me to build my future. And one more time, the AFS came to show that the peace among all the people depends on understanding each one by the exchange program. Building friendship all over the world helps better understanding and knowing of the peace. Thank you very much! Exchange student from Brazil February 7, 1980 Tarek Mostafa I am Tarek Mostafa, the AFS exchange student from Egypt. I am spending the school year here in Dover High. When I arrived in the United States on August 21, 1979, I didn't think I would enjoy my stay here this much. I really enjoyed everything here, even school. Although I had a rough schedule, I learned a lot of new things. My teachers were all nice and helpful. I made a lot of American friends in Dover. I loved Dover. Of course, I will travel to some other states during the year. I was busy all year, as I joined AFS, the Jerseymen, the school Soccer team, the Student Prints, the school play, and the school Tennis team. I stayed with the Estler family. My host brother is sophomore Andy Estler. I love my host family as my own family, and I will never forget them. I met at first some difference in the way of American life which I got used to after a while, besides the very strange cold weather, which I have gotten used to. I hope I gave a good view of Egyptian students in everything I did here. Also, thanks to everybody who made my year in Dover one of the best years I have ever had. As the 1970's come to an end and the new decade rolls in, we find ourselves in the midst of a reawakening. Not only do we look forward to the new decade, but we also reflect on the passing one and the special moments it held. Tiger '80” is for that sincere purpose of catching the memories of the passing decade and preserving them for future decades to come. I would like to offer heartfelt thanks to all who made this book of memories possible. Ms. Kathy Krzywicki, who, although is no longer with the yearbook, got us started and gave us the initiative for our book; Mr. Tim Frederiks, who took on an added responsibility of our business advisor; Mr. Robert Dobson and Mr. Lou Esposito for all their time and help; and the entire staff of the 1980 Tiger Yearbook for giving it all they had. I would especially like to extend a gracious thank you to Mrs. Linda Reiners, who joined our staff late, yet acted as a friend and kept us going when the going got tough and kept our spirits up despite the problems we faced. But most of all, I would like to thank YOU, the student body of Dover High School for your support in making this yearbook possible! My sincerest thanks to all!
