Although he was with us for only one school year, we all loved and respected him both as a teacher and a friend. 3 Douglas Is Principal’s Message The graduating class of 1965 consists of thirty-nine boys and twenty-four girls--the largest in the history of Douglas High School. Of the boys and girls who entered the Junior I class of 100 in 1959-60, 65 per cent graduated in 1965. This is a remarkable increase in the number of graduates from the preceding classes. The average who graduated from Junior I class in the preceding years were one-half or less. The students of Douglas High School realize that an enriched curriculum must be offered and mastered by them today in order for them to satisfactorily com- pete with students from other high schools in college and other lines of endeavor or work. Our school has tried to prepare its students for this competition in offering advanced courses in subject matter fields. We have tried also to teach other things which are of equal if not greater im- portance. One of these lessons, not in the curriculum and difficult to teach, is the ability to face the problems of today and take practical steps toward their solution. With the rapid pace of modern life, things seem to be more involved. The world is more complex today than when we teachers and parents were young. A fellow got a job sweeping the floor in a bank, did his work well, and was rewarded with promotion. Each promotion brought more and different responsibilities which in turn did well. He even rose to a position of trust and finally became president of the bank. The path of success is not so clear today. The banker of today must learn many functions of banking from books and other courses that are taught in our high schools and colleges today. Our students are aware of these complex changes, not only in banking but in other occupations. Education has become a must to the forward-thinking student; therefore, the per- centage of students who enter Jr. I each year, graduate from Douglas High School, and continue their education, will increase. Received Trophies: Best Field Goal Shooter Best Free-throw Shooter Best Rebounder Best Effort Most Valuable Player of School 3 Year Letterman The 1965 season for Coach Thomas Rains' hardwood crew began with high hopes for a great season. The team, al- though short, was filled with the desire to win and this desire to win paid off in the first games of the season. During the Douglas Invitation Tournament, the Eagles defeated Woodville then D.A.R. to collect the first trophy of the year. The Eagles collected 8 more wins for a 9-1 record before falling to Holly Pond. In the finals at the Sand Mtn. Tourney, the Eagles won over Sylvania to capture third place and the second trophy. After the Sand Mtn. Tourney, the Eagles slump- ed and lost five in a row with only one win. Entering the County tourney to meet Guntersville, hopes were dim, but the Eagles came through with a win over Guntersville. After this the team started a slow Darrell Gamble--Co-Captain 1964-65 2 Year Letterman All District 1 yr. Best Defensive Player Trophy rise with a win over Springville, Gunters- ville, Oneonta, Holly Pond, Crossville, but dropped two games to D.A.R . and Geraldine. Going to the area tournament with a 18-11 record, Douglas was seeded first. To gain a region play-off berth, they won over Oneonta and Cold Springs to collect the third trophy. Now the biggest hurdle of the year loomed before the Eagles--the Curry Yellowjackets. This was the final step in the road to Tuscaloosa. Curry had a 24-2 record going into the game and were confident of an easy victory. But the team from Douglas, through determination and effort pulled the biggest upset of the year with a close victory over Curry for a trip to the State Tournament. At Tuscaloosa, the Eagles were matched with powerful Priceville--the favorite for the state championship. After a slow start in the game, the Eagles trailed by a wide margin. After the first quarter, the boys played superb ball, but the early deficit proved to be too much and the Eagles went down 66-57 to finish off an excellent 22-11 season. “A ” Team 17 TOURNAMENT TEAM COA CH AND MAN A GERS Earl Carnes-Trainer, Randall Ayers-Score Keeper, Coach Thomas Rains, Lewis Sims-Manager, Welton Greene--Manager.
