LOYD BERRY, PRINCIPAL 'Prwcifeal' ’TJteMag.e Theodore Roosevelt, one of our greatest presidents, stated, That for a man to become a great man, he must be a pretty good boy. A philosopher, I am told, was asked what he thought boys and girls should be taught. He replied simply, Those things which they will use when they become men and women. Your school has attempted to meet these responsibilities, in academic subjects, moral aptitudes, and a development of the highest quality of sportsmanship. We are proud of the accomplishment of our students, but we are not deceived that this is the end; it is only the begin- ning of greater problems which will confront them tomorrow. May we use our aptitudes, moral character, academic abil- ities, and attitudes of good sportsmanship to successfully solve our problems as they approach us daily. We, the class of 1956 Douglas High School, lovingly dedicate this edition of the EAGLE to our parents who have, oftentimes at sacrifice to themselves, so adequate- ly provided for us and made possible these wonderful years. Thank you. FACULTY MR. GLENN EVANS B. A., Jacksonville Junior I MRS. LUCY TALLEY B. A., G. S. C. W. Master, Columbia University New York MISS BOBBIE ANNE FREEMAN B. A., Athens College M. The big day has arrived and the class of 1956 are congre- gating at the Douglas High School for the Alumni Banquet. The new ball room has just been completed and the architect, J. C. Ferguson, tells us that it is unsurpassed in design. As we approach the receiving line we see that the fam- ous aviator James Upchurch and his lovely wife, the former Sue Crosson, are being greeted by the principal of the school, Donald Gunnels and hi3 wife, nee Imogene Mayo. Assisting Mr. Mrs. Gunnels are the mathematics instructor, Randell Teal, and his constant shadow, Miss Carolyn Lang, who teaches phys- ical education. Finally joining the receiving line, late as has been his custom throughout life, is Harold Daniel, financial manager of the school and his bride of one week, the former Peggy Young. The opening door indicates the arrival of other guests; among them are the world renown singers Cecilia Owens and Nella Dean Mayo who tell us they have a short leave from the studio of Eugene Echols. Mr. Echols' wife, the former Mavis Mayo, has just presented him with twin daughters. The next party to arrive is that of the Broadway star of screen and stage, Miss Betty McNair, escorted by the well-known writer of children's comics, Orman Blackwood. Arriving just at the precisely correct moment is the holder of the title of Best Dressed Man of the Year Don O'Neal and his wife who is famous for her parties in their Washington, D. C. home, the former Elaine Mitchell. Accompanying them as nurse of their three sons is Carolyn Goodman. Sweeping through the corridors and gracefully floating up to the reception line is the unescorted Reba Roden who has just completed a tour of the European countries as a special ambassador of the U. S. Government. Miss Roden was accompanied on this tour by the secret service agents Leumon Musick and Mrs. Musick, nee Mary Howard. Arranging the flowers on the ban- quet table is the famous florist, Barbara Hill. The tempting meal is said to have been prepared by the chef of the local Gourmet's Delight, Kelton Dunn. Playing quiet dinner music on his zither is A. L. Pearce, Jr. , who is commonly found among his antiques in his ante bellum home at Nixon's Chapel. A telephone call confirms the suspicion that Doyle Howard is unable to attend the Alumni Banquet because his wife, Wac General Loretta Glassco has him on K. P. duty because while acting as nursemaid to their three-year triplets he bit one in self defense. Flying in on her jet-propelled motorcycle is the still hopeful Dorothy Pledger who is fast on the trail of Kenneth Windsor who divides his time be- tween his business of fur trapping which has made him the youngest self-made millionaire of his day and his speed boats on the Guntersville river. A visit to the nursery kept by the famous child psychologist Shelva Jean McWhorter re- veals that the talented little daughter of Sarah Williams, Kelta Lou, is enter- taining the three young sons of Claudette Whitehead. Taking a bit of time away from her near-bankrupted dance studio to visit with her classmates is the lovely dance instructor Gayle Davis. Lionel Wright is anxious to present each classmate with a gift from his thriving aviary, a talking parakeet. Furnishing plenty of customers for James Kennemer the embalmer of the Needmore Fun- eral Parlor is the local chiropractor, James Johnson. Acting as judge for the Contest of the Most Beautiful Rabbit is Gleen Buckelew who has just awarded first prize to the owner of Fritzpatrick-Von-Cottontail, III, Kenneth Formby, operator of Formby Furry Farm. Jo Ann Hunt is unable to attend the banquet because she is on tour of the United States giving her brilliant lecture The Way to Keep Hubby Happy. (She should know as she has never married one to make him unhappy.) The speaker of the evening is Dorothea Bowen who has just returned from Russia where her husband is chief of the army of occupation. Her speech was prepared by her invaluable secretary, Minnie Lou Hanson, who has recently published her third novel entitled Men. Mice, Money. The first dance is led by the delightfully original Betty Williams who has defied all prophesies to become the first woman to cook a meal on the moon. Her brave husband who ate the meal sleeps peacefully near the Unknown Soldier. A Messenger boy de- livers a message from Dr. Mrs. Lendell Benefield who express regrets but Mr. Benefield, head of the Dept, of Agricultural Science at A. P. I. cannot leave his classes and they cannot find a baby sitter for their four little daughters.
