Text from Pages 1 - 86 of the 1953 volume:

V On the crest of old Sand Mountain Reared against the sky. Proudly stands our dear old high school As the years roll by- Chorus- Lift the chorus, speed it onward Proud our anthems ring. Hail to Thee, old Douglas High School While the praise we sing. By our teachers we'll stand ever Battling for the right. And our duties will shirk never Nor give up the fight - When life's problems really test us And school days are through. May we each and all prove worthy Douglas dear of you- The Seniors of '53 wish to dedicate this EAGLE to Mrs. Vespa Thomas. Her efforts have been untiring; her humor never failing; and to her , our favorite, we pay tribute. SW id Sdu Gti Superintendent McGREER RAINS MR. HENRY LOGAN Principal of Elementary School MR. The following personal bestowals have been awarded to different people: Virginia Gibson’s intelligence to Janice Brewster. Lela Mae Buckelew's love for boys to Madge Kinney. Norma Jean Bradley’s wavy hair to Patsy Dendy. Bobby Lee McDaniel's courage in love making to Spright Holland. Ann (Martin) Thompson’s beauty to Marjan Logan. Shirley York’s ability to sing to Charlotte Head. Merle Edward's sense of humor to Hazel Heard. Faye Wilson's figure to Ann Daniel. Elizabeth Glassco's popularity to Deloris Echols. Gwendloyn Gregory’s neatness to Fay Mitchell. Elsie Mae Scott’s flawless compexion to Virginia Smith. Bobby Hammond's clownish ways to Max Dean. Mereidth Wheeler’s lankiness to Kathryn Kilpatric. Freida Hunt's walk to Helen Ruth Morrow. Neysa Nixon's talent to Ann Marlyn Worthy. Nell Hamrick's laziness to Barbara Gregory. Mary Harvie Pledger's modesty to Myron Whitehead. Imogene Childer’s leadership ability to Ruth Williams. Megan Richardson's co-operativeness to Patsy Brown. Roland Bartlett's typing ability to Kelton Williams. Sherwell Tolleson's acting ability to David Mangum. Victoria Cook's frankness to Corene Gunter. Mildred Kinney's quietness to Nancy Goss. Shirley Denson's bangs to Gaylia Chambers. Gerald Parrish's name keyhole to Conrad Royston. Wayne Horton's good looks to Samuel Childers. Rex Graben’s height to W. A. Johnson. Ray Roberson's managing ability to Donald Howard. Thomas Smith's shortness to Wayne Brown. Max Rigsby's exaggeration ability to Jerry Knapp. Sherrill Smith's temper to Gene Gerstman. Vernell McWhorter’s friendliness to Fleetie Pearl Eubanks. Delmas Radcliff's athletic ability to Gene Martin. J. L. Harris's promptness to Jimmy Dan Musick. Guy Copeland's poetry to Mary Ann Johnson. Jake Sartin’s ability to farm to Wayne Warren. Willene Heath's ability to get a steady to Priscilla Jarrell. Madge Gilliland's capability to save money to Ruth Cry ar. Clarence Burgess's courteousness to Jimmy Hammond. 1, Alpha Camp leave my responsibility to make the class will to Freddie Jean Johnson. Setutn 'Ptafi iecy Have you heard the latest! JakeSartin, top ranking farmer of Sand Mountain, and Willene Heath are investing their profits on their hogs in a yacht for a few weeks second-honeymoon on the Gulf of Mexico. Mary Harvie Pledger looks lovely in her nurse's uniform. I would like to visit the orphanage and recreational center she has opened up in Atlanta. It is being rumored that Lela Mae Buckelew is just dying to meet the new under-taker, Max Rigsby, now established at Mt. Herbron, Alabama. Merle Edwards, there seems to be a lot of money missing lately from the First Nation- al Bank in Birmingham. Would you happen to know anything about this? If you need a prescription filled quickly and accurately, go to the Albertville Apothe- cary. J. L. Harris is Pharmacist there. Turn on the radio, someone, it is time for the Bing Crosby show! Shirley York is to be his guest girl-vocalist tonight. Did you know Mildred Kinney is working for Ann Thompson—counting the children-- while Ann keeps house and helps Earl in his charity work? Wonder why Gerald Parrish suddenly decided to become a pilot? It couldn't possibly be because of the famous flying cousins, Imogene Childers and Victoria Cook--eh, girls? Has anyone noticed the new sign over the door of the old vacant office in Birmingham? It reads thus: Sherwell Tolleson, Dentist. First twenty-five patients slaughtered free. Now why do you suppose Gwendolyn Gregory quit teaching English at Douglas to move to Birmingham in search of work as a receptionist? I just recently learned why all the boys are joining the armed services—Why? Because nobody but our magnetic Elizabeth Glassco is serving as U S O Hostess. Look Roland Bartlett is wearing false teeth! I wonder how Nell Hamrick managed to knock all his teeth out with one swing of her fifteen year old rolling pin. They have won the title of the Happiest Married Couple in this area. Just who do you suppose is working as file clerk at Clarence Burgess' used car lot- no other than Shirley Denson. Ask Gaylia who is boss around the McDaniel home--or maybe you should ask Bobby Lee. Anyway I'm sure they would both say little Junior... If anyone needs a permanent or facial just give Freida Hunt a ring; her shop is located on second avenue up town in Douglas. I hear Shirrell and Norma Jean Smith are building a little bungalow on Shirrell's father’s farm. Managers, Thomas Smith and Ray Roberson, are expecting twenty-five thousand people to attend the Thursday night performance in the Ace Auditorium. The Comedians, the Great Pair, are none other than Guy Copeland and Bobby Hammond. Alpha Camp and two children boarded a plane this morning for Honolulu to be with Colonel Camp for the remainder of his tour of duty there. The graduating exercises of the Craig Modeling School are scheduled for Friday night. I only know two girls of the class, Megan Richardson and Fay Wilson. Virginia Gibson, designer of Lovelhouse Fashions, is designing the costumes for the school. Looks like Rex Graben and Wayne Horton have given up their service careers to adver- tise for prospective brides through Elsie Mae Scott’s Lonely Hearts column of the Douglas Herald. Miss Scott recommended off hand to them Vernell McWhorter and Meredith Wheeler. The Douglas team really is tops this term; no wonder, Delmos Radcliff is their coach! Neysa Nixion's television program now begins at 10:00 o’clock instead of 8:00 as originally scheduled.
