HISTORY OF DOUGLAS SCHOOL The first school site of Douglas was about 1 2 a mile south of where the present school is located. It was built in 1898-1899. The first principal was Mr. Joe Cartee. Teachers in the old building were Mr. Gunnels, Mrs. Pearl Moore and Mr. Jim Bohanon. The Elementary building that is now used was built in 1921. It was a three-teacher school and the principal was Louis Mason, followed by Mr. Boyd Turner. In 1926 the Junior High School was added to the school with Mr. L. D. Woodham as principal. The first Senior High work was begun in 1932 in the building of only four classrooms and office. At this time Mr. Gurwin served as principal for two years. Mr. Holloway followed the third year and next Mr. E. C. Whitney was principal for two years. Mr. Loyd Berry followed Mr. Whitney and has been principal for ten years. In 1936 six more classrooms were built. The lunchroom and two more classrooms were built in 1948. In 1949 the Gymnasium was built and following the year, 1950, the Home Economics and Voca- tional Agriculture buildings were built. Indoor bathrooms were built in both the Elementary and High School in 1951. At the present time there are twenty-one teachers at Douglas.
