It was built in 1898-1899. The first principal was Mr. Joe Cartee. Teachers in the old building were Mr. Gunnels, Mrs. Pearl Moore and Mr. Jim Bohanon. The Elementary building that is now used was built in 1921. It was a three-teacher school and the principal was Louis Mason, followed by Mr. Boyd Turner. In 1926 the Junior High School was added to the school with Mr. L. D. Woodham as principal. The first Senior High work was begun in 1932 in the building of only four classrooms and office. At this time Mr. Gurwin served as principal for two years. Mr. Holloway followed the third year and next Mr. E. C. Whitney was principal for two years. Mr. Loyd Berry followed Mr. Whitney and has been principal for ten years. In 1936 six more classrooms were built. The lunchroom and two more classrooms were built in 1948. In 1949 the Gymnasium was built and following the year, 1950, the Home Economics and Voca- tional Agriculture buildings were built. Indoor bathrooms were built in both the Elementary and High School in 1951. At the present time there are twenty-one teachers at Douglas. J. W. ROWE MR. M. G. They are dressed in caps and gowns, and they have just completed the final rehearsal of their graduation speeches. They have a few moments to spare before the graduation program begins, so they have decided to stop by the library and look over the books in the shelves. Sue says, Oh, look, here are all the old Eagle's—Let's look at some--'' Here's one twenty-five years old. See, it is dated 1952. This should be good. And from this they comment on the graduate pictures. Look at Audrie Brothers. She married the butcher you know. She must have gained 100 pounds since this picture was taken. There's Thurman Brewster, our milkman. You'd never know him. He had his hair once. Do you recognize this one? He is our Saturday night master of ceremonies down at the old square dance. Dupree Boland has always looked like a hillbilly. Oh, here's the little ole man I always see walking down the streets of Boaz wearing a sign which says ' I'll never be wed, but don’t be bitter; I'm an excellent baby sitter!’ The name under this picture is Billy Adcock. Of course you recognize Earl Dean Bowen's picture. She still looks as young today as she did twenty-five years ago, but no wonder--she has been working as Odis Pierce's private secretary at Nixon Chapel all this time. Here is H. A. Brown, the famed President of the class of '52. He's lived up to all expectations and made a million dollars. How he made it is what these two F.B.I. workers, Vema Ree Scruggs and Edna Earl Smith would like to find out. I've heard that they have been in Washington these past twenty-five years. Look! here are the two cuties of the class. I’m sure Elloise Johnson and Marvin Woodall are happi- ly married and living in their little country home surrounded by a white fence, but I bet it won't keep Mary Helen Daniel out if she is still as slim as she was in '52. Then there’s Cois Burgett, the 'great lover' who's still waiting to be recognized in Hollywood. Well, Virginia Daniel must have had as much trouble twenty-five years ago as she is having now trying to get a suntan. Oh I know, she should visit this one, Mrs. Robert Whitten, nee Helen Wright, who has made her home in Florida. ” Now here's one who was always giving advice for nothing in school, but now he gets paid for it. I know everyone has read Tommy Carne's 'Advice to The Lovelorn Column. I know this one, Sherwon Hunt, well enough to say that he has made several trips to the hospital since ‘52. I wonder if these two pretty nurses, Fay Nell Dyar and Margaret Whitten could be the cause of that. Maybe this laboratory operator. Urban Johnson, could find out Liz's trouble. Oh I didn't know Johnny Cook was a member of this class. He was discovered a few days ago in a girls' boarding school. He's the dancing teacher there. Of course, his favorite student is Freida Hopper. I bet she is still looking for her man in the history of this class. Talmage Garmon! Where have I heard that name before? Oh yes, I saw it in last week's newspaper. In fact it was an ad which read like this— Unemployed genius wishes any job with big pay and short hours. Call Talmage Garmon after 11:00 A.M. Oh, now if any of the boys need advice about how to catch a girl, you might drop by Horton and see this fellow, Bobby Joe Hayes. He should be able to answer any question you might ask him after having had five wives. By the way, I saw Doyle Whitehead, the new traffic officer, writing our Mrs. Ida Lee Hopper and Mrs. Ruby Jo Taylor a ticket for speeding. Their only reason was that they were supposed to be at the sta- tion when Earlene Howard’s train pulled in from Atlanta, and that they had to hurry back home to see that the kids didn’t get into a big fight. ” I recognize Lashon Hill's picture. He is a very important man in Washington now; he empties wastebaskets in the office of the fifth assistant to the fourth Under Secretary of State. ” Now, here are two brave, heroic explorers, Myron Horton and Earl Richardson, who are making extensive studies on the surface of the moon. You certainly can't tell by these pictures that they are explorers. And oh yes, there is Clinton Jimmerson. He and Jane seem to be living happily while they are rearing a family and of course he is still working on his invention, a way to can sunlight on a rainy day. Well let's see who we've got here. They tell me that Charles Jones is one end of a hone in a trained animal act in the circus. Now here are our next door neighbors, Welton Reed and his wife, the former Janette Johnson. Their wealth is of a different nature, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, yes, nine little Reeds. Here 1 see Peggy Karr's most courteous picture. She is now Mn. Bobby Goodwin, and she has made her home in Albertville. I'll bet it is a beautiful home because her housekeeper is none other than Dewayne West. I saw a personal about this young gentleman the other day. It read like this: 'Lonely bachelor wishes to correspond with widow. Prefer one under thirty, if she is rich, age doesn't matter. Write L. G. Morrow. Seems as if this Betty Sue Marsh, who is now Mrs. Reginald Cornelius, isn't getting to say much around her home in Guntersville except 'Take that out of your mouth Susis' 'Stop hitting sister, Joey' and 'Drop that rock, Jane. Well look here would you, here is our basketball coach, Howell Taylor. He certainly looks full of mischief here doesn't he? Oh, 1 see why he is staying around Douglas. This Senior Beauty picture, Ann Montgomery, our most polite and intelligent English teacher here, could be having something to do with it. My goodness, here's our Principal, Mr. Eugene Robertson. I didn’t know he'd ever been young. Looks kind of commanding doesn't he? Here's Lowell Stephens. He was a big baseball star. That must be how he got the muscle to carry all those ash barrels around. Well, well, here is the Pastor of our church, the Reverend Earl Morrow. He looked kind of solemn in '52 didn’t he? By the way, his secretary is Jean Elliott. 1 bet she is very capable of the job after se- curing the experience in 1952. Here is one more. This is Norma Gilliland, who has been an active member of the United States' Armed Forces for almost twenty-years. She looks as if she is waiting for her uniform in this picture doesn't she? Quite a class those 1952'ers were. I'll bet they never realized they would become so successful by twenty-five years later. By--Maberene Jackson
