Prom Disappointing? It s hard to be a woman. Especially when prom rolls around. A woman has to wait until a guy asks her. Old social customs prevent the average Ameri- can girl from asking someone to Prom herself. If by some miracle of miracles you get through all the red tape and do actual- ly get to go to Prom something inevi- tably goes wrong. Picking out a dress can be the most exciting and frustrating chore in the world. Finally you find the perfect dress. You can hardly wait to knock his socks off when he sees you. Finally itls time. The big day is here. You write out a schedule of what you need to do to get ready: 11 a.m. - Go to the beauty parlor, prepared with a Glamour magazine clipping of what you want your hair to look like. 1 p.m. - Go to the makeup counter and buy 330 worth of new makeup. 2:30 p.m. - Go to the florist and pick up your date s boutonniere. They ve lost your order and you have to settle for yellow gladiolas instead of a red rose. 3:30 - Take a long hot bubble bath until your skin looks like a prune. 5 p.m. - Lock yourself in the bathroom until 6:30 as you put on your makeup get dressed and polish your nails. 6:30 - The doorbell rings as your heart skips a beat. Your nail po- lish smears when you open the door. Your date looks fabulous until you dis- cover he is wearing white tennis socks. Oh well, you can't have everything. You feel like Fred Astaire and Gin- ger Rogers as you climb into his pickup truck. The night flies by as you meet all your friends at the prom. You are driving home when the truck gets a flat tire, and you freeze to death in the truck while your date hitchhikes to the nearest service sta- tion. Yes, this has been the night of your dreams. You figure next time, you'll wait for Al Pacino to ask you.
