JANUARY 1939 HISTORY Durmg the year of I9 l the stxllness was broken here and there by walls and crnes from lusty throats whlch betokened the blrth of the Class of 39 After un dergomg a strugglxng chlldhood and mthstandmg the rlgors of grade school thus group presented themselves before the faculty of Dormont Hlgh School for en trace to that lnstltutlon Thls brllllant class proxed to be very modest Bemg fanrly altruxstlc wlth the good of the school at heart we gave a host of athletes to the varsxty teams Bemg soclal mmded the class arranged many joyful enter tamments Belng fun lovmg many pranks were taken from the upperclassmen Fven ln our flrst year we mstngated an old nme splrlt of class rlvalry We carrned thus same spmt mto our Sophomore year The upperclassmen then entrusted us wxth the mauguratlon of orgamzed haznng m an endeavor to create a desire ln the une Class of 39 to follow nn our footsteps as an example of Dormont Hxgh Spxrnt Throughout the year we successfully mamtamed thxs policy Aside from thus we contributed largely to the regular actlvltnes The Class of 39 were xery much bereaved at the loss of thexr great frlend counsellor and Supermtendent Ralph Radcliffe who dled m March 1936 The following year as unlors we undertook with smcerlty the task of carrylng out our ldeas xn the role of upperclassmen Here we co operated wlth the Seniors nn attempting to advance Dormont Hxgh materlallv as well as xdeallstlcally under the guxdance of our new Supermtendent D H Stewart who ns very capable of car ryxng our school s mntlals As Seniors we dld our utmost to Carry On Election of off cers w1s held This election resulted ln the following bemg chosen to lead the destxnles of our class Presxdent Wxlllam Wetmore Vice Presxdent Ray W1lson Secretary Al Dlmlmg Treasurer Elmer Gaub One of the highlights of the season was the Class play a fierce old melodrama entltled The Adorable Spendthrxft A roup of aspnrmg young actors and actresses under the able dlrectlon of Mxss Mxller put on 1 creditable performance to a packed auditorium A more serious note the Baccalaureate Servxce Ln the Hnllsdale ALldltOI'lUIH was mtroduced mto the last phase of hxgh school llfe The invocation was gxven by the Reverend A O Gage and the address by Dr Wllllam Tolley the presxdent of Allegheny College MUSIC was supplled bv the school orchestra and the Glee Club Then came the great st event of hlgh school lxfe graduatxon Elghty semors were presented wlth thenr long sought after sheepskxns on Thursday January 26 xn the Hillsdale School Speeches were glven by Marle Thompson Donald Campbell Helen Stevenson and Georgxne Zlegenfuss after whlch Dr Stewart presented the dlplomas We be lleve that speaking enther hxstorlcally or prophetlcally the members of 39 may truly be termed Chlldren of Dormont Hugh The members of our class born as they were just after the greatest confl ct the world has ever experienced the World Wfar have before them many problems whxch arxse naturally from such a huge upheaval Durxng our hlgh school years we heard and read of economlc condltlons hxgh taxes labor unrest strikes Com mumsm Facxsm Nazism and Capxtallsm Oar generatnon IS faced with many problems whlch must be solved before nts solxdarlty and happiness can be assured The mstntutlons for whlch our forbears fought and dxed are threatened Our xdeal of Democratic government IS threatened more from wnthm than from wxthout This xs a d1rect challenge for all the Classes of 39 the country over It wxll requlre the astuteness of men and women hke Washxngton and lmcoln 'und other great personages to Carry On let our Class of 39 contrxbute thexr share to the welfare of our generatnon and to our posternty 5 l - . . , ' 1 1 1 . , ' .
