SENIOR C ASS HISTORY
SPRING IFRESHMENI
As the seasons roll on III cndles succes'-lon Sprlng wlth her changeable skles sends forth her flrst shoots
The soft l7K'1gl'lI grass lnd thc buds expand under the gentle lnfluence of the sun s ray s So we ln 1940 entered
Donelson Hlgh School fresh lnexperlenced dlscloslng but the merest SllggCStlOl'1 of our latent talents we
entered upon the hrst year s work w lth the bllss born of lgnorance
Between wanderlng ll1fO the wrong classes pesterlng the teachers and haylng eraser hghts we kept the
school Ill qulte an uprolr Our homc room teachers Mr Wllson and Mlss Caldwell took us III hand alld
trled to reform us lf you look at us today the ama lng results of thelr efforts can be seen DLlflUg the year 97
puplls enllsted ln our class and 79 of these haxe remalned for the four years
One of the outstandlllg achleyements of our freshman year was the wlnnlng of the class tournament hy
our glrls
About ChI1SCm8S of thls year we lost Mr Wllson to the army and acqulred Mr Charles Llggett Our
class presldent was Earl Whlte and our cheerleaders were Marlon Shelton and Ruth Dabbs Thus we Went
on through our freshman year and by the help of the Sophomores JUDIOTS and SCDIOIS ltS ylyld hues became
more subdued and acqulred the fuller bloom of summer
SUMMER CSOPHOMORESW
When the llrst warm breezes blow the grow lng plants of nature take on the warmer hues of summer
The flowers bloom and the skles are bluer Our work thls year was harder and the pleasures fewer alld
farther between but we found greater pleasure ln the companlonshlp of our classmates
Durlng the year a yery dark cloud lndeed appeared On December 8 1941 we all gathered IU the audl
torlum to hear the Presldent s speech to Congress ln thls we asked that war be declared because of the
unwarranted attack whlch had been made on Pearl Harbor the day before We all felt SCYIOUS but we dldn t
reallze the full lmpllcatlon of that speech
lc lders were Marlon Shelton and Bowllng B Boyd jr B B was also on the cast of Plnk and Patches
whlch won nrst place ln the contest at Clarksxllle At Knoxyllle the play won thlrd place and he was on the
all state cast The glrls agaln won the class tournament and so an example to underclassmen the eason
passes on to the gorgeous autumn
AUTUMN JJUNIORSJ
Autumn wlth all lts hflllldlll follage and frult ushers IU the harvest So we as junlors began to reap
the result of our flrst labors As autumn s yellow glow tlnges all thlngs wlth warmth so our genlal comrade
shlp shed a glow oxer the toll of the year even sendlng lts rays lnto the other three classes Earl Whlte was
chosen presldent of our class and Ruth Dabbs and Marlon Shelton were our cheerleaders Mr J B Thomp
son and MISS Luclle Mason were our home room teachers for the year Near the end of the year howeyer
we lost Mr Thompson who IS ln clylllan aylatlon
We glxe the SCHIOYS a kld party and Mlss Mason and Earl Whlte were chosen the best dressed glrl
and boy The glrls ushered at the baccalaureate sermon and the graduatlon thus gettlng a PYBXICW of what
woul ' be expected of us as senlors
The leayes scatter and fall the snows descend and all gather around the crackllng flames and so we
enter mto the senlor year
WINTER KSENIORSD
As wlnter s cold and snow wlthout drlves all to the shelter of home and hearth so we SEUIOIS looklng
ahead and dreadlng the cold and lonellness of the outslde unsheltered by our Alma Mater haye drawn close
together to enjoy our last day Tom Denson Eleanor Sheld Howard Moore and Earleen MCKEUZIE haye
been wlth us just thls one year but they are so essentlal to the class we often wonder how we ever managed
to do wlthout them
Thls year our class presldent w as Ralph Flemlng At Chrlstmas Ralph left school and entered the Army
Alr Corps and Earl Whlte our ylce presldent took charge Our treasurer was BCSSIC Baldwln and our
secretary Ruth Dabbs Marlon Shelton and Ruth Dabbs were agam our cheerleaders and Marlon was
presldent of the Dayldson County Sportsmanshlp League
Our Senlors are actlxe and athletlc Hoss Foster MHIIOH Shelton Oleta Kelley Marvene judklns and
Frances Hagar were leaders on the basketball team The most athletlc boys were Bllly Martln Ralph Flem
lng Charles Malone Clyde Dunlap and Earl Whlte Sterllng Pugh was golng strong on the football team
when hls ankle was broken Bllly Martln was on the Tennessean s all clty football team and Ralph Flemlng
was on the Banners all clty football team
Our semor year has been a hard one lllkleell but now our alms and asplratlons have ln a manner been
reached Today wlth stout hearts and upllfted heads we turn oar fa es toward the future ready to meet
whatever It may hold for us
