Command Master Chief YNCM (SW] Douglas G. Hughes, USN Master Chief Hughes was born and raised in Ithaca, New York. He joined the Naval Reserve in March, 1960 and attended Boot Camp at Great Lakes. In November, 1961 he reported for two years active duty in a Willy Fud squadron, VAW 12, in Quonset Point, Rhode Island. The squadron later relocated at NAS Norfolk, Virginia. While assigned to the USS ESSEX (CVS 9) detachment, then YN3 Hughes participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis Blockade. Following a year of Naval Reserves, he reported to Naval Reserve Center. Troy, New York for a four- year tour as a TAR. In September, 1969 he rejoined the fleet aboard the Minesweeper USS AFFRAY (MSO 511) in the Mediterranean where he was promoted to YNl and learned skills such as Underway OOD, CIC Watch Supervisor, and Minesweeping Helicopter Controller. He was later selected for duty as a Flag Writer near the end of a tour at Naval Air Facility, Washington, D.C., located at Andrews Air Force Base, Suitland, Maryland. Following 16 weeks of training at Defense Information School in Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, he reported to the Staff of Commander Service Group Two onboard USS PIEDMONT (AD 17) in Norfolk. He was promoted to YNC that same day. As a YNC, he served as the Flag Writer for the Deputy Commander Naval Surface Force Atlantic and the Administrative Supervisor of the N3 Section. He earned his Silver Cutlasses in 1979 and was promoted to YNCS(SW) in 1981. In July, 1982 he returned to sea as the Flag Writer for Commander, Cruiser-De- stroyer Group EIGHT. During the next two years he deployed to the Mediterranean twice, once onboard USS BIDDLE (CG 24) and USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62) and the following year began the deployment onboard INDY during Grenada and then transferred to USS TICONDEROGA (CG 47) where most of the cruise was spent off Beirut. In 1984 he was promoted to YNCM(SW) and transferred to USS BELKNAP (CG 26) as the Command Master Chief. During his tour BELKNAP was selected for assignment as SIXTH Fleet Flagship and reported for a five- year tour in Gaeta, Italy in June, 1986. In December of 1986, YNCM(SW) Hughes reported to the USS DONALD B. BEARY (FF 1085) where he has not only served as Command Master Chief, but also as Postal Officer, Adminis- trative Officer, Administrative Department Head, and other significant duties. The Master Chief has received the Navy Commendation Medal (4 awards). Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Naval Reserve Meritorious Medal, Good Conduct Medal (five awards) and various service and campaign medals. The M aster Chief resides in Virginia Beach with his wife Beverly. They have four sons, John, 25, Richard, 24, Douglas Jr., 23, and Tony, 15.

Executive Officer LCDR Dennis D. Hancock, USN A resident of Florida, LCDR Hancock enlisted in the Naval Service in 1966. Following comple- tion of electronics school, he was assigned to Naval Support Activity Saigon, Vietnam where he served as a maintenance technician and crewmember on river patrol boats in the Mekong Delta. After the in-country tour, he was assigned to USS MANSFIELD (DD 728) which made a WestPac deployment prior to decommissioning. He was honorably discharged in April 1970. Following graduation from Florida State University in 1973, he was commissioned an Ensign through the Officer ' s Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. Significant tours include Damage Control Assistant and Main Propulsion Assistant on USS TRIPPE (FF 1075), Engineer Officer on USS AYLWIN (FF 1081), Officer-in-Charge Engineering Mobile Training Team, Charleston, S.C, and Material Officer, Destroyer Squadron Four. LCDR Hancock is married to the former Carmen Griffin of Naples, Florida. They have two chil- dren, Joseph age 10, and Ellen age 8. The family resides in Charleston, S.C.
