JI B. Brill, P. Iohnson, C. Pierce, J. DeLuca, A. Cuda, D. Pye, G. Jones, K. Metzler, B. Miller, J. McCarthy. ,. lx n The Upsvving FTER the long wintry months, spring sports are welcomed to the spotlight, with the advent of Baseball Season. The bats and other gear are conditioned for service, the uniforms are lifted out of moth balls to await the call of candidate and veteran alike, and the young athletes eagerly await the bulletin-board call to spring practice. In spite of the fact that Dolgevi1le's outlook at the start of the 1953 season was rather dim, due to the loss of four seasoned players, the Blue Devils managed to salvage a creditable .500 record in league play. The 1953 season was marked by outstanding pitching on the part of Keith Metzler and Brian Miller, with John McCarthy taking most ofthe catching assignments. Joe DeLuca's efficient coverage of the short-stop position, Ant Cuda's spectacular catches in right field, and Doug Brill's solid hand- ling of the second-base sack all helped to start Dolgeville on the up- swing baseball-wise. The Blue Devils ended the season with four wins and four losses to their credit..which was far from a bad record in view of the pre- vious season's performance. We know that championship baseball teams are not made in one season, but with the loss of only three players to graduation, and with the new men such as Gary Jones, Cliff Pierce, Dave Pye, and Frank Borst beginning to shape up satisfactorily, a championship team should not be too far away. 39 DHS SCORES OPP 8 Fort Plain 9 4 Canajoharie 3 10 St. lohnsville 0 2 Fort Plain 3 0 St. Mary's 9 17 St. Johnsville 6 12 Canajoharie 8 5 St. Mary's 4 D.
