Football Dolgevllle 1953 Mud State Champions HE h1story of football 1n Dolgev1lle goes back 1nto the dun dark past of the 20's when our f1rst team hero1cal1y took the f1eld clad 1n rather umque umforms cons1st1ng of a plaln pa1r of pants sweat sh1rts fdyed blue th a D' as the only decorat1on soft helmets and sneakers The SQUAD m1nd you was 13 men strong a fact wh1ch certamly made subst1tut1on a sxmple matter What th1s group lacked 1n equ1pment and number lt more than made up for 1n determ1nat1on and dr1ve for 1n 3 short sea sons some of the boys who played 1n that f1rst game as fresh men played on Dolgev1lle s f1rst champ1onsh1p team f1n1sh 1ng the season w1th one loss and one t1e game S1nce those days Dolgev1lle has always played good foot ball but th1s year we have another team of wh1ch we can be especxally proud The close of the 1953 seasonfound our team COACH WILLIAMBYNON champ1ons of the M1d State Conference W1th only a few seasoned backf1eld players returnlng from the 1952 squad Coach Bynon faced tremendous odds 1n rebu1ld1ng the l1ne Although he had to depend almost ent1rely on Freshman whole team comb1ned the1r 1nd1v1dual talents to pull together 1n fact one of the reasons that makes thls year partlcularly successful was the evldence of good sportsmanshlp and team work espe c1ally team work, throughout the season There were no 1nd1v1dual stars or pr1ma donnas on our 1953 team Maklng the1r f1na1 gr1d1ron appearance for Dolgevllle were Joe DeLuca one of the best quarter backs 1n the league and Jack McCarthy Slde l1ned by 1nJur1es durlng the f1rst three games buta valuable hand durlng the rema1n1ng four games Other semors maklng farewell appearances were Ke1th Metzler one of the best offens1ve ends around and Jerry M1l1er agood defensxve back Nor can too much credlt be glven to the l1ne for w1thout the great play of the forward wall the f1ne runnlng of the backs would have gone for naught Completxng the l1ne were Butch We1nschre1der a valuable fullback Dave Pye an end show1ng talent 1n runn1ng the ball Chff P1erce and Gary Jones spark plugs of the halfback pos1t1on Don DeMarco Doug Harper Frank Borst Odd1e Br1ll and Barrett Keller a fast runmng tackle also d1d excellent Jobs The f1ne play1ng of our 1953 team d1d much to rebulld enthus1asm among the local football fans Throughout the season the team had the loyal support of townspeople and students ahke and at the close of the season the fans feted the gndders at two d1nners As a further mark of esteem the local buslnessmen have presented veryhandsome Jackets to each member ofthe squad 1953 has been a hlghly successful football season and lt 15 to be hoped that next year's team w1ll carry on 1n the same sp1r1t of hard p1ay1ng clean sportsmansh1p that has marked the play of thls champ1onsh1p team Metzler gams yards agamst Sauquozt DeLuca runs mto Frankfort opposxuon 36 i 9 ' , ' , wi ' I ' , I G . 0 D l G .
