The Music: Dept. HE history of our present music department dates back to the 1920's when the only musical activity the school boasted was a three part girl's glee club. Soon, however, the famous Aspirin Quartet was introducing close harmony to the student body, and a chorus was beginning to build from small groups of interested students. Even though our present chorus boasts 130 members, 65 of whom are boys, the chorus of 1938 has so far been the most outstanding, having received a sectional I, a state II, a national III. Our first orchestra, composed of five members, made up in sincerity of purpose for what it lacked in number. Under the di- tinuing to its present number of 50 capable musicians. At no time since its formation has the orchestra been rated lower than a II, and the 1938 orchestra made the state finals. The year 1935 marked the beginning of the string orchestra, which was started, and has continued under the direction of Mrs. Ethel Doxtader. Mrs. Doxtader's work has not only improved the string section of the orchestra, but has resulted in a 40 piece string orchestra, which plays annual- ly at the Christmas concert, P.T.A. meetings, spring concerts, and county festivals. The senior boys double quartet was formed two years ago when these boys first showed inter- est in close harmony and barber shop singing. The senior girls double quartet became interested in four part singing as juniors, and along with the boys, has entertained various groups and organ- izations. In 1935 the Board of Education hired the first band director for the Dolgeville schools. The following year on Memorial Day, the people of the village gathered on Main Street to see the first high school band ever to wear the Dolgeville school colors. Fifty students in new royal blue and white uniforms marched proudly down the street led by their director, Mr. john Albrecht. After the death of Mr. Albrecht, the band was kept alive through the efforts of Mr. Lembo, Mr. Fazio, and Mrs. Tanner. It was this group that Mr. lack Brunner found when he joined our faculty three years ago. Mr. Brunner has since organized a football band, a marching band, and a concert band. Last May, seven pupils who entered the State Contest received I, three received II's, and two pupils re- ceived III's. The music department that this school has today did not simply grow from the interest of stu- dents, but has resulted from the untiring efforts of Mrs. Tanner. Her work has inspired countless to continue in a musical career, and given hundreds a hobby that provides pleasure for others as well as themselves. Although she has done more than her share in expanding our educational pro- gram, and although her efforts have built up the prestige of this school among other schools, the help that Mrs. Tanner has given us has never been confined to the music department alone. Through her sympathetic understanding many students have found their way over rough places and have con- tinued to a better and happier life. 38 rection of Mrs. Tanner, membership began its upward climb, con-
