These two teams, along with the team of 1945, which was undefeated but was tied once, were the only ones to reach this high in the history of the school, an honor earned by only the best of teams. They were trained by the very able Head Coach, B. A. Taylor, a graduate of Emporia State: his assistants were, Head Line Coach, Fred Day, and Cowboy Coach, Jack Cotton. They were sparkplugs that kept the team going and spurred them on to a very successful season. The team as a whole won the championship of the West Central Kansas League and ranked fifth in the state by Associated Press Poll . They had three players on the All-State squad! Mert James and Kenneth Everhart, an the second team: and Jerry Felkel, honorable mention. The Demons also had seven on the all-league team! Jerry Felkel, Mert James, Kenneth Everhart, Gene Foulks, Larry Snodgrass, first team: Larry Maskus and Larry Fleming, honorable mention. Because of the depth in substitutions, Coach Taylor was able to use twenty-five players as they were needed, and he lettered these twenty-five. They are! The Demons won nine straight games with no defeats. They had 234 points to theiropponents' 57 points. Myrlen Jameswas high scorerthis year with 86 pointsiCharles Collier was second with 31: Felkel had 307 Fleming: 24, Board, 215 Cox, T85 Riley, T25 Everhart, 6: and VanDine, 6. This year the Demons succeeded in keeping the Hatchetin our annual game with Garden City. The Demons defeated Stafford for the first time since T945. On November 22, l95l, Turkey Day , Dodge City defeated Pratt for the championship of our league, and, as always the losing captain had to walk off the field without his shoes. The Pratt Captains got cold feet. 74 DEMONS i FRONT ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Maurice lloltfrerich, Kenny Everharr, Myrlen James, CharlesCol1ier, Jerry Fclkel, EugeneFaurot.
