We do this not only to show our sincere appreciation for his contributions to education but also to honor the man himself. Realizing that no amount of words ean do justice to him, we would simply like to say that the example he has set and his friendly, good-natured manner will forever endear him to our hearts. VVell, Juniors, here you are, knoeking at the portal, with three fourths of your high sehool career behind you. Remember that first day in September of 1954, when you entered as Green Freshiesn? Despite the rough treatment, you carried on with eourage and soon learned to follow the routine. Your first duty was to eleet elass officers. You ehose Dave Knouse, Ann Mall, and Bonnie Klatt. You entered your sophomore year feeling a little older and a little wiser than the year before. This year John Gerlaeh, Dave Adler, and Edith Pana were ehosen your leaders. The junior year seemed quite routine, but you were a little more important now. You were upper- elassmen. By eleeting Chieo Contreras, liverett Brooks, and Kathy Carlson as your offieers, you got this year off to a good start. You ehoose your elass rings in Oetober and flashed them with pride at Holiday time. This year you were elegible for the Junior-Senior Prom, a privilege long antici- pated. This is one of the biggest events in high sehool and will live in your memories for years to eome. You have eonipleted three years at DHS and to you 'i'11'fl1I'O seniors-we wish the best of luek. Gerlach-President, S. Van Scoyoc-Vice President. Governments, when first established, usually have to proceed slowly and cautiously, but the new Student Council did just the opposite this year by jumping right in and taking off where the old system of representatives left off. The officers for the year were Bud Gerlach, president g Sam Yan Scoyoc, vice-presidentg Bonnie Klatt, treasurerg and Laurie Cappa, secretary. Each homeroom elected one representative and an alternate. Both the alternates and the representa- tives were placed on committees, but o11ly the representatives attended the council meetings. The officers and committee chairmen formed a group which met occasionally with Mr. Host, the advisor. A report on the activities of the council was given over WSDR by this group. Last fall the chairmen and the officers went to a convention held in Highland Park. The state convention held in Chicago this spring was attended by the newly elected 1957-58 officers. The Social Committee under co-chairmenship of Pat Kennedy and Janis LeSage planned eleven dances. One of the first of these was the Home- 46 .Simlmf coming Dance. In order to add variety to the social events, Twirp Days were introduced, and the fun was climaxed by a dance to which slacks were worn. At the Valentine Dance, the King and Queen of Hearts, Jim Dixon and Sally Van Scoyoc, were crowned. Excitement prevailed at the Elec- tion Jitney as everyone awaited the announce- ment of the winning candidates in the Student Council election. The biggest of all the school dances was the Spring Semi-Formal. In accord- ance with tradition the committee concluded its social calender with the Senior Farewell Dance. Student entertainment was provided at some of the dances. During Homecoming, Fred Toole's Sportsman- ship Committee was in charge of the election of the queen and her court and the half-time cere- mony at the game. The committee worked on a code of ethics which may be adopted next year, and also sponsored a Courtesy Week which em- phasized good courtesy and dress. A questionaire was sent out to the students to determine what new clubs might be desirable to them. For Home- coming the committee handled the float parade and the pep rally afterwards. By a close vote the committee recommended changing the Constitu- tion so that there would be three candidates for each Student Council office instead of two. The council passed this amendment. The biggest pro- ject for the committee was the officers' election this spring. Other elections held by the Organiza- tions Committee included a mock presidential election on November 6 and the track queen election this spring. Publicizing the dances and activities of the council was the responsibility of Dave Raymond and the Public Relations Com mittee. Dance post- ers had to be made, news releases given to the papers, and announcements put on the P.A. The Homecoming poster contest was under the direc- tion of this committee. The Assembly Committee headed by Jolm Peterson planned the assemblies. A new Orienta- tion Awemblyw was introduced last fall to acquaint new students with the extra-curricular activities at DHS. At the Christmas Assembly the band, choruses, robed choir, and speech department participated. The Election Assembly was an ex- citing one with the spotlight on the twelve candi- dates running for an office on the council. This committee also secured the judges for the float parade. Under the chairmanship of Dave Adler, the Service Committee sold student telephone books. Besides that, the committee sponsored a Care Dance sending the proceeds to buy food for needy Europeans. For Homecoming the com- mittee sponsored the slogan contest. No student couI1cil could run smoothly without its faculty advisor. Mr. Host deserves much praise for his constant supply of ideas, his time and above all, his patience. 47 550Wl6!g Row 3: IC. Brookh, I.. L1-wis, D. VValk01' Row 21 li. Priuc-, L. Hvllows, M. For example, sueh a visit early in September would reveal Mareia Sanderson, page one editor, rewriting a late story, Judy Ames, editor of page two, eutting and reeutting the senior interviews in an effort to make them Ht into two equal eoluinnsg and Ann Weleh trying to talk F1'ed Toole i11to putting those extra ads that didn't quite fit on page three onto page four. However, Carol Hoyle, editor-in-ehief, and Miss Marshall, advisor, were always able to straighten out these diffieulties and see that the DIXINI eame out every other Friday. These neweoiners soon learned the ropes, and room 404 beeame more and more like a professional newspaper offiee. With the new semester eame the new editors headed by Judy Ames, the new editor-in-chief. The first few weeks in January showed a strong resemblanee to the early part of September, as the new staff experienced mueh the same diffieul- ties in getting started. On the first page, Kay Tessman beeame an expert at squeezing and stretehing headlines, Ann Eichler learned the hard way that she must let the printer know if she wanted stories set in two eolumnsg Mary Kava- naugh and Sam Van Seoyoe took a crack at ad jugglingg and Judy Ames burned l1er share of the midnight oil writing Hits and Missesfl April brought the long awaited April Fools issue, and the DIXINI staff gladly threw rules of journalism to the wind and prepared one of the most mixed up DIXINI issues in DHS history. Time didn't tary with this staff, and before long, the last DIXINI for the sehool year was safely in the printer's offiee. Under the direction of Mrs. Lucy Roe, the advisor, and Judy Gipson, the president, the Girl's Athletic Association had a most successful year in '56-'57. The other members of the board, Norma Lebre, vice-president, Rosemary Sereg, secretary-treasurer, Mary Houden, senior sports chairman, Mary Kavanagh, junior sports chair- man, and Becky Reeder, sophomore sports chair- man, also helped in planning the year's full calen- dar of activities. The fall program included basket- ball, badminton, and hiking. Kathy Byron was in charge of hiking, Becky Reeder of basketball, and Edith Pana of badminton. Among the high- lights were the annual hikes to Lowell Park and Grand Detour and the basketball tournament with the seniors taking second place and the juniors, third. On September 22, the board mem- bers attended a workshop in Geneseo at which they presented the program. In October six girls representing the Dixon GAA, accompanied by Mrs. Roe, attended a Play Day in Mt. Morris. A group of girls also attended the NCIC tournament in Sterling on November 10. At an early meeting, the board appointed Pris- cilla Hargraves as social chairman, Mary Houden as song leader, and Suzi Etnyre as publicity chair- man. During the winter, the girls engaged in volleyball, bowling, and square dancing. The square dancing was done at the Youth Center in 68 QAJ4. ofa... Row 3: N. Suzie Etnyre was in charge, and a group of seniors presented the program. Afterwards refreshments were served. A volleyball tournament was held with the seniors taking first place, the freshmen second, the sophomores third, and the juniors fourth. The GAA also conducted the Polio Drive with Kathy Currens in charge. Linda Burke was in charge of homeroom collection, and Jane Pires was in charge of freshman dime collection. Seven hundred dollars was collected during this drive. Freshman Initiation was held on February 26 with Becky Reeder as the general chairman. Sally Drew and her committee chose Cinderella as the theme for the GAA Dance on March 16. Carol Conkrite was in charge of the food committee. With spring came new activities including base- ball, hiking, archery, golf, and tennis. Norma Lebre planned the District Play Day to which Dixon Was the host on May 4. The Eighth Grade Play Day was held on May 16 with Lynn Hender- son in charge. The year's activities were ended with the Senior Farewell Banquet on May 23. At this time the awards were also presented. Our first game looked like a preview to a good season as Dixon nosed out VVashington in a tightly eon- tested battle. The team showed that old spark whieh was eharaeteristie of last year's team. We gave West Roekford, Sterling, and Ottawa a time of it, never giving up until the final gun. The high- light of the season was with DeKalb. Sinee it was Homeeoming, there was no better time to put on a brilliant exhibition of football, and the Dukes were up to it. VVe completely outelassed the DeKalb eleven from start to finish. Dixon's aggres- siveness, alertness, sharp blocking, and stout de- fense really Put De Barbs on De Fc-nee. The Dukes, now finding that the winning way was the best way, promptly went out and beat Hall the next week. We put up a good fight against Rock Falls, but we were set back. The last impression is always a lasting impression, and the team made it a good one. Dixon literally swamped Prineeton to elose out a fine season. The team named John Wooten Most Valuable Playerw for the seeond eonseeutive year, while John Peterson was eleeted Captain. The junior Dukes lived up to the standards set by last year's undefeated, untied team by posting a 5-1-1 season. Although there were no shut-outs, the Dukelets allowed only one TD per game, except for the last one. They outscored their opponents 121-57. The first game ended with Dixon beating Amboy 14-6. Polo then fell to Dixon 20-6. In the third game Rochelle lost by a. lopsided score 32-6. Mendota followed the previ- ous Dixon opponents 14-7. The Sterling Papooses were tromped 28-6. The last two games were the season's thrillers. The Dukes and Princeton ended their game tied 7-7 to break the string of untied undefeated games that the Duklets have had since 1954. Rock Falls then handed Dixon their first loss since that time 19-6. However, the score was much closer than is indicated. The teams were- tied until the Rockets scored with forty-five sec- onds left to play.
