LTJG J. M. JOHNSTON The mission of the Operations and Navigation Department is to collect, evaluate, and disseminate combat and operations information required for the assigned task of the ship, to provide Intelligence, Aerological and external communications service, and to provide safe and effective navigation and piloting of the ship. The tasks of the O 81 N Department include the planning, scheduling and coordination of the shipg the continual and accu- rate plotting of the ship's course and positiong recommending courses to be steeredg and the procurement and maintenance of navigational charts, publications and equipment. The Quartermasters assist the Navigator in plotting the ship's course and position underway and are responsi- ble for recording all significant events in the Ship's Deck Log. The Signalmen send messages by flashing light, semaphore and flaghoist, render passing honors to other ships and boats, and are responsible for the proper display of ensigns and personal flags during salutes and national honors. The Radarmen collect, display and evaluate tacti- cal and combat information needed for the efficient fighting and navigation of the ship.
