. I ii TT H. L. PARLETTE, qMc5 USNR Dixie's medical department 'Sis assigned the task of maintaining and repairing the ultimate in complex machinery: the human body. Caring for active duty personnel in the fleet has unique points, such as the first major operation on board in go months, an appendectomy, underway from Pearl Harbor to Subic Bay. An average month in sick bay would consist of approximately 700 outpatient visits, 9oo prescriptions filled, I5O X-rays taken, go physical examinations performed, 140 limited services Csanitary inspections, pesticide spraying, etcb performed and zo minor or major surgical procedures performed. The duty section may expect to be consulted approximately I5 times between the hours of I60O and o8oo on any given day. The personnel of sick bay, I officer in charge and IO medical corpsmen, are quick to realize the responsibility placed upon them. LTJG J. M. JOHNSTON The mission of the Operations and Navigation Department is to collect, evaluate, and disseminate combat and operations information required for the assigned task of the ship, to provide Intelligence, Aerological and external communications service, and to provide safe and effective navigation and piloting of the ship. The tasks of the O 81 N Department include the planning, scheduling and coordination of the shipg the continual and accu- rate plotting of the ship's course and positiong recommending courses to be steeredg and the procurement and maintenance of navigational charts, publications and equipment. The Quartermasters assist the Navigator in plotting the ship's course and position underway and are responsi- ble for recording all significant events in the Ship's Deck Log. The Signalmen send messages by flashing light, semaphore and flaghoist, render passing honors to other ships and boats, and are responsible for the proper display of ensigns and personal flags during salutes and national honors. The Radarmen collect, display and evaluate tacti- cal and combat information needed for the efficient fighting and navigation of the ship.
